Ali from At Home Pet Care came into our home twice a day to care for our dog and two cats. She had to give medicine to the dog, feed the animals, walk the dog and bring in the mail. She left notes every day, left the kitchen quite clean and our animals were in great shape when we returned. One of the cats is pretty skittish and previous times, we have heard that the pet sitter hasn't seen much of him. Ali was able to entice Bilbo out of hiding and even pet him - I was surprised and grateful that she took the time to work at that. We are thrilled with At Home Pet Care's service and recommend them highly!

We hired Jessica about 5 months ago and are so grateful that we found her. Her passion for dogs is so evident and I know our pup Leo is in good hands every weekday when we are gone. Jessica is reliable, flexible and always gives us updates on how Leo is doing We have used her dog walk/park service as well as overnight boarding. We know Leo is in good hands with her because every time he sees her he is ECSTATIC and we come home to a happy pup. I highly recommend Jessica and her business.

I wanted to send a quick message to let you know how pleased I was with Shelly this past weekend. She really showed great concern and care for my 6 cats and was very descriptive in her emails to me while I was away on holiday. By far, she has been the best pet sitter I’ve had. I would really like to keep using her from here on out as the pet sitter for my cats. My cats really liked her and she just took such good care of them. Please, if it’s possible I really want to keep Shelly as my pet sitter from here on out. It was a great experience and I knew from the “get go” upon meeting her, my cats were in excellent hands with her. I am truly a satisfied and happy client!

Taara did an excellent job with my long-haired chihuahua, Jax. We never used a pet sitter with him before and were quite worried he would not be very easy to watch. When we went to meet her, she was outside with her dogs. My dog is very vocal when he is scared and he did just that, but Taara just reached out, and scooped him up. She held him close and comforted him. At that moment I knew he would do fine with her. After dropping him off, she kept us informed with texts and pics of him throughout his stay. He actually made friends with an Aussie she was watching. She also had a spa day with a doggy massage and nail trim ( she asked if it was okay first). When we picked him up, he actually kissed her goodbye, on the nose, while I was holding him (that has never happened, he is very protective of us) Taara is a very caring and loving towards animals. She is very knowledgeable and I highly recommend her as a pet sitter and I definitely will use her again! 👍👍👍

Lynn takes care of my dog Wilson when I'm out of town. Has 4 or 5 times now. He wags his tail when we arrive. He is 11 years old and a cocker poodle mix. Lynn give him personal care like cleaning his eyes with a wet wash cloth when needed. She really loves animals. Without any hesitation I highly recommend Lynn to anyone who wants their dog boarded in a loving home and not a traditional kennel.

About

I have been taking care of animals ever since I was little. Granted I have only taken care of dogs and cats, but I can't complain because, I love those animals with my whole heart. All my life, I have owned a dog (two dogs so far), and they have literally been my life. I lived in Minneapolis growing up in high school, and I loved taking my yellow lab out for walks around the lakes I lived by. Everywhere that I have lived, I have always taken care of some of my neighbors' pets while they were on vacation, and I’ve jumped at the opportunity to take care of other people’s animals. Plus, I honestly think that animals love me, as stuck-up as that sounds.

I am a high school graduate. I have dogs and have had other pets. I'm very caring, athletic, outdoorsy, and compassionate. I love animals, and I am looking to pet sit this summer before I leave for college to make some extra money!

About

My aim is to treat your pets just like any other family member. I will treat them with love and care for them as if they were my own. My top priority is to provide TLC to your pets. I provide care in the pets' own home, as I know it can be an inconvenience to have to bring them to a kennel and have them boarded. Not to mention, pets are most comfortable in their own homes, with their toys, blankets, etc close at hand. I have spent the last three years volunteering at the Buffalo Animal Humane Society as a dog walker and have also volunteered at the Animal Humane Society's annual Walk for Animals. I've loved animals my whole life, and I would love the chance to care for your pets while you are at work or on vacation.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does boarding a horse cost?

Finding the right horse boarding location is a big step in a horse owner’s life. This will be the place your horse will live and where you will visit multiple times per week or even daily. The cost of horse boarding will depend on the level of service you desire, the location of the stables, and the luxury level of the property. Here are some examples of average horse boarding costs:

  • Overnight stabling: $30 per horse per night.
  • Partial boarding (owner feeds and mucks): $220 per horse per month, with a three-month commitment.
    • Administration of oral medication: $10 per dose.
    • Bandaging: $20 per event, plus cost of materials.
    • Trailering to vet if owner is unable: $25, plus $25 per hour to wait with horse.
  • Basic full boarding: $325-$350 per month per horse. Includes twice daily hay and daily stall cleaning.
    • Horse training: $20 per session.
    • Pasture turn out: $20 per session.
    • Blanketing: $1 per day/$30 per month.
    • Vet or farrier hold: $20. This means haltering the horse and standing with it as it receives treatment or shoeing.

Where can I board my horse?

You can board your horse at any barn or stable that provides horse boarding services. To find horse boarding near you, read reviews of area locations and speak with equestrian friends to find one with a solid reputation. Ideally, the location will be within a reasonable drive from your home or office. This is especially important if you are paying for partial boarding services and are responsible for feeding your horse and cleaning its stall each day. You may choose your boarding barn or stables based on the services they provide. Some offer more extensive amenities — at an added price — that reduce the amount of work you need to do to keep your horse comfortable. Consider whether you want training, blanketing, exercise and other perks in addition to standard offerings like hay and stable mucking. Your stable may have temperament requirements and proof that your horse has the proper vaccinations required by your state. This protects both your horse and the other horses in the stable. Many states require that locations offering horse boarding services have stable licenses that are renewed each year. Always be sure to enter into a clearly written boarding contract that will cover your horse and belongings in case of accident, and remember our tips for smart hiring.

What is horse boarding?

Horse boarding is like rental housing for your horse. Horse boarding is helpful for people who don’t have the space or the resources to install and maintain a stable on their property. A horse can be housed in a barn with other horses and receive the care they need. Owners can visit their horse for riding, grooming, training, etc. Horse boarding services may vary based on the company and the price. Some horse boarders may offer short-term boarding of 24 hours to several nights for people passing through an area, while most offer boarding by the month for horses whose owners live in the area. There is partial- and full-service boarding, which indicates how much of the work of feeding the horse and cleaning the stall is the responsibility of the owner rather than the boarding barn. For an added fee, horse boarding can also include grooming services, riding and training, medication administration, and more.

To find the right boarding fit for you and your horse, make a list of your top priorities. These might include immediate access to riding trails, round-the-clock supervision, or a nearby or affiliated veterinarian. Always visit the site to learn exactly where your horse will be kept and whether the barn and grounds are in good condition. Read reviews, and always practice smart hiring. It’s also critical to sign the proper legal documents that protect both you and your horse, such as boarding agreements. Above all, make sure it seems like a place your horse will be comfortable between your visits.
