Working with Rita has been a phenomenal experience. She is professional, knowledgeable, but more than that she is an excellent instructor. You explain what you need and she has a resolution. Rita makes training easy. She makes sure you know how to work with your dog. Her hands on training gives you the knowledge and confidence to continue training. Both you and your dog will benefit from working with Rita. It’s reward based and fun. Don’t worry if you’re not getting it Rita is a phone call away. Her time with you is not just a schedule and we’ll talk about it on your next visit. She is there in between to guide you. I can not say enough about this remarkable woman and Canine Revival.

We hired Mandy to come to our home for a dog training session to work with our Chihuahua Boston mix, who is unpredictably aggressive to people and dogs. She was flexible with our schedule. She asked all of the right questions to fully understand our dog, and was great at reading his body language to get to the core reason for his behavior. We've been following her advice and have seen improvement in just a few days, and looking forward to continuing to teach him some better manners! Overall our experience was excellent, we highly recommend Mandy at Terra Paws.

Lori Brown of Browns Dog Training, is a very unconventional trainer. Lori devotes her entire day and home to the animals she trains, boards, provides day care for and clearly is fulfilling her passion to animals. Our Hunter, loved staying with Lori for two weeks and was still happy to see us when we came to pick him up. Believe me, Lori is an excellent trainer and so passionate about her four legged family. I suggest you at least meet Lori. She is unconventional but fantastic with dogs. We will bring Hunter back just so he can see Lori again.

Roxanne is amazing! She has worked so diligently with our family and our puppy's needs. Any problem we were having, she had a way to address it. The best part is, it works!! She has a miracle solution for every instance. Roxanne is always willing to listen and do what is best for the family and the dog. Her techniques are easy to follow and always positive! She has reassured our family that we are making progress and are doing what is best for our puppy. We have seen wonderful changes in our puppy and are excited to continue to work with Roxanne. :)

I hired Lindsay to work with my dog, Rocky, on basic obedience. He was very territorial of parts of the house and needed work with some basic commands. Lindsay showed me how to communicate better with Rocky. I now know what he needs from me in order to feel safe and this has had a huge impact on his behavior. Lindsay uses positive reinforcement and counter-conditioning. She keeps the dog feeling safe and positive, showing him what he should be doing instead of what he should not be doing. She uses treats to get her points across to the dog. She does not use bark or shock collars or anything that would make the dog feel uncomfortable. I am very happy with my experience so far, and will continue using Kinney K9 Academy.

I love Alpha Dog Care, but more importantly my dog Howie LOVES Mary. We live in the neighborhood and walk by her house every day. If Howie notices any activity over at "Marys", he has to go over and get his attention from her. Howie is a "jumper" so I was a little nervous about leaving him with anyone. Mary had it all under control. She definitely has the heart for the dogs....they all seem to love her. Her house is set up with the dogs in mind....,the dogs are even allowed on the furniture. Howie liked getting a walk every day in addition to other activities.....such as story time and popcorn time ( if their humans allow it) I chose an " in her home" doggy care like Alpha Dog Care because Howie is such a social guy and would've been sad/bored with limited social interaction....somebody was there 24/7 which made me alot more comfortable!

Jenny gives my dogs (which I treat as my children) the best care possible every time I call upon her to be there to provide care for them. I believe what makes Jenny the best is she has pets of her own and treats all pets under her care as if they were hers. I started using her to watch my pets at my home where she would stop in 3 times daily and it has now progressed for my longer trips to where she watches them at her home conveniently located in Golden Valley which has ample space and a beautiful large fenced back yard for my dogs to play in. A+ rating and I highly recommend using Jenny for your dog/cat care needs.

I am very energetic and have a huge passion for dogs. I am willing to do extra services such as feeding and bathing.

I am starting college in September at Hamline University. My goal is to become a veterinarian after I take my pre-vet courses and then veterinarian courses. I have a 9 month old lab right now that I have trained fully on my own. I have always had a dog growing up and feel like I can truly connect with animals. I adore animals of all kinds cats, dogs, ferrets, bunnies, any animal you can imagine. I have a passion for animals and I want to help them. When I am taking care of an animal I do everything I can to make them feel loved. I still know how to discipline an animal that can be naughty too. I believe just a firm tone letting the animal know he was naughty and a gentle slap on the wrist is just enough. I love walking animals, playing with them and making them feel loved.

For my experience my fees are very fair. I do one on ones and teach classes. I like most the different behaviors and how each dog is different.

I am a Minneapolis/St. Paul based dog trainer. I am here to create positive changes in your dog and your home by using all positive training to train obedience and behavior problems. I teach the dogs what to do, rather than what not to do, and help you communicate better with your dog, and help your dog become your friend.

Because I have a special connection with animals and they know it. All animals love me. Looking after the well-being of pets, make sure they are warm and comfortable with food and water and attention. I am a caregiver and that makes me happy.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
