I used Mark to complete all the work needed in my store front, Bluebird Cakery, in downtown Faribault MN. We were a start up Bakery and had a very tight deadline to meet our opening goals. He was very flexible with his schedule especially when I needed work done in a pinch! He was able to do the work on quickly and the results are things we continue to get compliments on each day (everyone says how crisp and clean the store looks). He did lots of work including: tiling, constructing custom point of sales station, assemble lighting, hooking up sinks, installing and assembling shelves, and custom molding to match the historic building! I was most impressed by his creativity to find workable solutions for my custom needs. All the work he did was inspected by the department of Agriculture and met code requirements - which was nice because he was knowledgeable on code and gave me advice on how to do things right the first time versus having to pay him to come back and redo work later. All of my staff members said he was very curtious and helpful to work clean when on site -- he even helped customers bring boxes to thier cars! Wow! I will continue to do work with Mark and I have decided to hire him on a monthly basis to do maintenance for my business. Keep up the good work and thanks for all your help!

Don White recently performed tiling, wallpaper removal and painting for me. Don did an excellent job. His "administative process was sound - he wrote out a proposal of services, his price was for the work to be done - not per hour - and committed to a completion timeline. I feel his pricing was very competitive. The kitchen tile backsplash was done within the timeframe he committed to. He was on time, respectful of my time and cleaned up thoroughly. The tile work was straight, good spacing, and very precise cutting around outlet openings. I love the final product. i then asked to remove 30 yr old wallpaper. He comitted to the project and completed the removal as well as painting the room as needed. Don is trustworthy and has high integrity. I'll be following up with him for future hoome project needs. Barry was a joy to work with. He knows his craft well and very reasonable rates. He did a remodel of our bathroom from start to finish and it turned out beautifully ( installed new cabinets, tiled floor, installed toilet, faucets, plumbing and drywall). He is not only a good at his job but he is a nice guy. I have recommended him to family and friends and would hire him in the future.

Larry installed a bathroom fan/light for us, including building a soffit (framing, drywall, taping/mud), wiring, and dealing with our vinyl siding. He worked with us to pick out the equipment we wanted. He talked us through his plans, listened to us, and answered our questions. When the day of the installation came, he didn't stop moving, so focused on the job. It was a smooth process from getting an estimate, scheduling the date, doing the job, through payment. We'd recommend Larry and will keep his number handy for future jobs.

Tyler and Mariah did an absolutely wonderful job finishing my bathroom and I would recommend them to anyone. The job was finished in the timeframe they originally estimated and there were no surprises along the way. Of course I had my heart set on the most pain-in-the-arse tile and shower door but Tyler got it all done without complaint! They were a pleasure to work with and I have no hesitation about using them for whatever hair-brained idea I come up with next 😂

Julio, Has completed multiple jobs for us! Some planned and some as a result of disaster. When disaster struck he came over as soon as he could to assess the issue! He installed stairs to an attic so we could enjoy extra storage space! He finished a laundry room counter so we could enjoy more space for folding. A fireplace mantle on the fireplace was very small and unimpressive. He found reclaimed wood for us with three pricing options so we were able to pick the piece of wood that not only looked great but met with our budget restrictions. He installed the mantle and also found smaller reclaimed wood for shelves. Everything was stained to the color we requested and installed. Lastly we had a shower leak through the kitchen ceiling ( the disaster) he fixed the tile leak, ensures the area was properly drying and mold free and once we were sure the problem was fixed repaired the kitchen ceiling. He is dependable.. He gets back to you when he says he will, agrees to changes in the job, listens, is personable, cleans up and great to have in our home. I would highly recommend!

Chris is absolutely the best contractor that I've had the privilege to engage on any of my Projects (and there have been quite a few). The finish carpentry expertise that he provided for the floor trim, doors, windows (sashes and jambs) on my house was absolutely outstanding. It all looks brand new (or actually better than new). If you're looking for your project to be done right, on-time, and on-budget, then I can think of nobody better for you to contact than Chris. I give him my highest rating and endorsement and would definitely contact him again with any future carpentry needs.

We are so pleased with beautiful craftsmanship of the recently completed remodel of our employee break room. From the moment of my first phone call with Bruce Stasch , I knew we had found the right person and company to complete a very challenging project. He provided a free estimate, and was patient with our questions. He always responded in a timely manner to all calls and emails, which was much appreciated by myself and the management team. There were no surprises with the estimate either. The kitchen back splash tile and granite counter tops are fantastic ! Plus they cleaned up every step of the way- no mess left. We would highly recommend Apex Construction & Tile for a business or a residential remodel project. The professionalism and courtesy demonstrated by Bruce and Jordan was outstanding. Thank you !

The first project Cris did for us was adding a sunroom on an existing balcony. He did some precision tile work on the floor and siding, installed a heated floor and built a gaspowered fireplace in the corner. Cris has a good eye for proportions and with wonderful artistry he built a fireplace from scratch from a picture I gave him. The outcome was a visually beautiful and cheerful space that we spend all our time in. The second project was adding a family room/bathroom to our cabin up North. The endresult is a very attractive room with again precision tile work, window installation, wood flooring, plumbing and wiring as well. Cris is a talented craftsman who brings a vision to each job and executes his work with attention to detail. He is easy to work with and is knowledgeable about materials. I can highly recommend him.

We had a ugly unfinished basement with a furnace in the middle of the room. After speaking with multiple contractors we selected Dpenn construction. David was able to creat a floor plan to get that out of the way, now we have a beautiful basement (bedroom, washroom, and bathroom with a walk-in shower). David was easy to work with, honest with pricing and scope of work, and we feel like we got a great value out of the work that was done. Would highly recommend.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

  • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
    • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to get tiling done?

You can install tiling on your floors, walls, counters, kitchen backsplash, outdoor patio and shower — to name a few places. Tile is beautiful, easy to clean, durable, and resilient against kids and pets. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Often, tile installation specialists quote a price per square foot for installation. Costs can increase if you want the pro to supply the tile instead of ordering it yourself. Other factors that can increase cost include specialized installation with a unique design that will require more labor to install.

Prep work will also affect tile installation costs. Demolition of the existing floor, counter or backsplash takes time and energy that will be reflected in the price. Necessary repairs, such as a sub-floor that needs bolstering before tile flooring can be installed, will also increase costs. For tile showers, one example of tile installation cost may be approximately $25 per square foot including all materials and labor. Average tile installation costs for backsplashes may run anywhere from $10 to $40, depending on the materials selected and the amount of labor required. The larger the area where tile is being installed, the lower the price per square foot will likely be. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for wood-look tile installation in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet.

How much does it cost to install tiles in a kitchen?

One of the most common kitchen upgrades is installing decorative backsplash tiles in the space between the counters and cabinets. It’s a chance for homeowners to get creative while also protecting the kitchen walls from splashes and stains. Like all tiling projects, kitchen tile project costs depend on the tiles you choose, installation materials such as grout and mortar, and any surface materials, like replacement backer board. The national average for a tiled kitchen backsplash is $490-$750. In general, pricing averages $10-$40 per square foot for installation, not including tile. Some professional tile installers have a minimum day rate for small projects, which averages $350.
