FAQs
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I'm currently taking online classes at the University of Edinburgh to prepare for the CPDT-KA (Certified Professional Dog Trainer- Knowledge Assessed). I also follow the writing and videos of professionals in the field, like Dr. Sophia Yin, Dr. Ian Dunbar, Dr. Patricia McConnell, Zak George, Emily Larlham and articles from Psychology Today.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I was taking my dog Rosie through a training program and she loved training. I started looking up dog training videos on youtube to give her extra homework. I started watching clicker seminars and reading animal behaviorist blogs on learning theory. I was hooked. At Rosie's graduation test, my instructor applauded our work and asked me to consider being a training assistant for the program. My husband had previously suggested I go into dog training as well.
- Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
A woman recently moved into a condo and her dog barked at every little noise. The neighbors complained and she risked being forced to move. I was able to teach him that sounds aren't scary and don't need to be barked at. She thanked me for saving their new home!
