I am based in Minnesota, and do in-person and remote lessons to anywhere in the country (the remote lessons work very well, I've had lots of long term students learn that way).
I LOVE teaching people drums!! Giving drum lessons has become one of my greatest passions in life. I'm a lifelong drummer and have over 25 years experience teaching. I've written 18 drum instruction books to date (15 available on Amazon), to support my teaching style/curriculum, and I also have plans for more books as well!
My strongest qualities (what I get most praised on by students):
- how much I CARE genuinely about students I interact with
- my infinite patience and calm friendly vibes (I'm happy / smiling a lot)
- my ability to make the lessons really fun and meaningful
- helping students advance quickly and stay motivated
- my awesome studio vibe I've set up for lessons (and filming videos)
- my books are easy to use / follow, and are comprehensive
I've worked with hundreds of students, across a range of skill levels from total newbie (most common) to gigging professionals, anywhere from 4 to 80 years old. (I'm also comfortable / experienced working with students on the ADHD and autism spectrum.) Most students have tended to stay on board with me for multiple years!
I'm well-trained on the drumset (as well as with some hand drums / percussion) and am comfortable teaching most topics and musical styles.
I studied jazz, rock, funk, and Brazilian drumming styles throughout college and beyond, and have had plenty of experience performing with bands on stages and in recording studios.
If you're *willing to train*, progress is going to be easy and fun!! You can trust me to get you excited / hooked on drumming.

Adam is an incredibly awesome person who made math enjoyable for me. He is patient and kind-hearted. I was struggling to prepare for my military entrance exam (ASVAB) and had searched extensively online for tutors. Unfortunately, there were few willing to help someone in my 40s. However, Adam stood out as a gem. Every moment I spent with him as my tutor was filled with invaluable lessons that I will cherish forever.

Wow. My mind was blown by my first lesson with Adam. I have a musical background from high school but always thought the drums were one of the hardest instruments. Having to keep a different tempo with different limbs always blew my mind. But within the first 25 minutes of my lesson Adam had me grooving and filling.
Loved it! Highly recommend Adam to everyone.
An aside… the studio space Adam has is such a sweet chill vibe.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
The first lesson usually includes identifying goals and doing some training. Often we start with a brief analysis of the student's positioning / grip / movements (I have studied efficient physical technique extensively). Any advice I have on technique usually becomes project #1... then we address the student's other skills such as rudiments, reading notation, rhythmic understanding / timing, groove coordination / vocabulary, fill agility / vocabulary, and song-playing experience. Based on these categories, it becomes easy to determine projects #2, #3, etc... and which level of the 'Play Drums Now' curriculum would be most appropriate to start with to cover those goals.
I assign 'projects' to work on (a.k.a. 'homework', but that sounds boring) between lessons, and expect the student to show up at the next lesson with some progress made!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I studied jazz and Brazilian percussion throughout early schooling and college, participating in all available jazz / percussion groups. I also joined a freelance rock/jam band and played local venues in southeast MN on weekends. At that time, I began offering private drum lessons - communication has always come easy to me and I've always naturally wanted to help others improve when I could help.
In 2003, I moved to Colorado and joined forces with the Colorado Music Institute, when it was still a small organization (since then, the school grew to employ 23+ instructors and gained the rank of 'largest private lesson facility in the country'). During my 10 years of experience there, it became clear that there was no typical curriculum used, so I began creating one - based on the burning question of 'what is the ideal path of improvement for drummers?' Before long, I had written 3 books - two on coordination development, and one for a central curriculum for beginner / intermediate drummers, called 'How To Play Drums'.
In 2014 I joined forces with Klash Drums, where I taught out of my main book to 6 days of students per week. I gradually evolved my teaching content to be a larger curriculum, consisting of 9 books across 3 skill levels, the 'Play Drums Now' series of books. I also authored a couple other books along the way.
Overall I've taught hundreds of students and have refined my approaches to various areas of drumset / hand-drum training.
