The first two lessons have been a lot of fun. Mike had me return a small questionnaire after the first lesson. On it were questions for students about the style of guitar that appeals to them, styles that don't, songs they would like to learn, aspects of the guitar they find frustrating, and questions about other aspects of music that may interest them (recording, bands). These questions helped me frame the kind of music I want to play and produced goals for music and techniques to learn. In lessons Mike is patient, full of good advice, and keeps the lesson on track. In short, Mike knows his stuff and I feel like we are off to a great start!

Jason- I just wanted to take a minute again to thank you guys for the AMAZING entertainment at our wedding on Saturday. The band was by far the highlight of the night. We had so much fun dancing and we clearly observed our guests having just as much fun :) We truly had the perfect day! Below is a review for the band. Please let me know if I could ever be a reference for future groups considering hiring you guys! Mike and I may just have to find another reason to throw a big party to have you again!! We will plan on seeing you at the Kramer/jay wedding in January and can't wait to dance our butts off again!! Sincerely, Monica & Mike Review: The Dap Squad was the perfect entertainment for our wedding! The music was fun and energetic. The group did a great job reading the crowd and playing the songs to match our upbeat energy level. The dance floor was full almost the entire night. Chazz did an awesome job getting the crowd involved. Kiersty, Jason and Chazz were excellent singers! My husband and I had a blast being invited up on stage to dance and sing with the band! We had several people comment on the band after our wedding and talking about how much fun they had dancing the night away! We would strongly recommend the Dap Squad for anyone considering live Music for their event. Jason is super easy to work with and knows his stuff!!On a scale of 1-10... We give The Dap Squad a 20!!!

Mr. Correa played at our wedding on 12/28/2012. The addition of a harp to the ceremony made for a very romantic event. I also purchased music CD's as gifts for our guests. Reuben also played a children's medical benefit at my request. Some of the medical staff remembered him from the hospital, as he played there a few years back, and commented how much they enjoyed hearing his soothing harp music during children's surgeries. Reuben's passion for playing the harp and his artistic ability are amazing and they shine through in his music. I highly recommend him for any event.

To use an acronym to describe Les Izmoore, I would say WTF! (Wonderfully Talented Ferpormers!!!) These guys were Led Zeppelin before there was a dirigible. And who's more popular...J.C., or the Beatles??? Neither, it's Les Izmoore by a long shot. It ain't even close. While you may never hear Lez Izmore and Eye Candy in the same sentence, these guys are all exceptional musicians and amazing performers. Unlike bands I've been in...these guys start and end at the same time. Incredible, right? I've always wondered why I couldn't do that! If you want a great band, at a great price, that is better than you could have hoped for...these guys are it. At some point, they'll have to change their name to Moore Izmoore. Cheers music fans...these guys will make your day!

Rueben is the consummate professional. He performed at my wedding and my mother's funeral service. I have also had the pleasure of listening to his soothing music at a coffee house and an appreciation banquet for overseas volunteer medical doctors and nurses. I highly recommend him for any engagement.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

    • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
    • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
    • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
