National Dusters did a great job steam-cleaning our carpets! The only thing I'd say is that the gent that came to our house was new and didn't seem to know what to charge us. I am wondering if we should have been charged for 3 rooms instead of 5? Still, I think $164 for the work that was done is fair. We are happy. Thanks!

I was very hesitant to use a service after using individuals in the past. Well Diana and Linnea have given us a personal touch cleaning!! Linnea has done the best job of anyone I have ever hired and she really cares!! If my children are home from school when she comes to clean, she does not make them feel uncomfortable, she really makes things shine and is quick too!! I cannot say enough about this cleaning service and I will never ever go back to the individuals I have used in the past.

I have used many many carpet cleaners, I guess because they were all equally mediocre so I just went for the best deal. Now I have found my carpet and apholstery cleaning company! My carpet and love seat have never looked so clean! My while house looks and smells so bright and clean. And my tech Brian was awesome. He was knowledgeable, consultative and personable and didn't try to hard sell me on anything. I definitely recommend these guys!

I was looking at carpet cleaners at like 9:30 Saturday night. Lakes Carpet was on line and I was set with cleaning on the next day! They showed up on time and there were no surprise charges. I really needed to get the carpets cleaned quickly but I never expected it to be the next day. Thanks Lakes Carpet!

I hired Addopreh Cleaning to deep clean an unfinished laundry room in my daughter's town home; the space was a disaster left from previous owners. His quote was very reasonable and he stuck to it. Komi speedily cleaned and organized the space expertly with little to no direction from me. He even took away the junk and old paint cans to dispose of properly for us! I would hire him again in a minute; I'm very happy with the work!

Barry installed a closet system for me, and helped fix some work done by another handyman. Additionally, he fixed my son's bunk bed, which no one had been able to do. He made sure he knew what my expectations were, and he followed through. The quality of his work was excellent. Unlike anyone I've worked with since I moved here earlier this year, he cleaned up the work area, which I greatly appreciated! I have more projects on my home, and when I get to them, I will call Barry.

I have an old property with a lot distressed areas, Shawn came in and helped clean up and even prevent some of he wear and tear with product I wasn't even aware of. Hard worker, polite if you have tenants and good energy and positive if in your home.

Brandon is one of the nicest person I’ve had do work for me. He was professional. Courteous. The value for the job was outstanding. After he was done cleaning the carpets he had me walk through to highlight any areas that may need another pass. He is a stickler for a professional job. I’d hire him again.

We have been very impressed with EMD cleaning. From the start, EMD has been professional, thorough, and very accommodating to our somewhat unique office layout. They have been excellent at communicating with us, always checking in if there are any questions or suggestions, and to make sure we are happy with the work being done. You can see that EMD takes pride in performing at a higher industry standard, and I'd absolutely recommend EMD to anyone in need of full-service cleaning.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who cleans area rugs?

Like your carpets, area rugs should ideally be cleaned at least once a year to remove dust and dirt and help them last longer. In general, carpet cleaning professionals also clean area rugs. Some rug cleaners bring their cleaning equipment to your home, while others remove your area rugs and clean them at their facilities. Either way, the rug should be cleaned with the solution most appropriate to its specific fabric and construction. It should also be completely dry before you return it to the floor.

What is upholstery cleaning?

From your carpets to your drapes to your furniture, all fabrics need to be cleaned. Cleaning upholstery, or the fabric on your furniture, removes the dirt and oils that are transferred to couches and chairs through regular use. Because furniture upholstery can be delicate and colors can fade easily, it’s often a good idea to let professional sofa cleaners handle the job. They’ll determine the type of fabric — usually cotton, linen, wool, suede or microfiber — and the appropriate method for cleaning it, either steam-cleaning or applying a dry-cleaning solvent. In general, cleaning an entire piece of furniture includes a pretreatment, cleaning, and neutralizing rinse to the body, plus removing and cleaning all cushions and cleaning all crevices.

An upholstery cleaner may clean the entire piece of furniture, on a regular schedule or by request, or do spot treatments to remove pet, food, drink, or oil and grease stains. Furniture can also be deodorized to remove the smell of pets or tobacco smoke. Furniture that’s used often, like that in your family room, should be cleaned once a year to keep it fresh and extend its life. Sofa cleaners often also offer repair services to mend tears in fabric or patch holes in leather.

How often should carpets be steam cleaned?

Dirty carpets can be unhealthy for the people living in the home, particularly those who have allergies, so it’s important to have them cleaned regularly; simply vacuuming once or twice a week isn’t enough. Carpet cleaning should be done by a professional carpet cleaning service at least once a year to remove grime and help extend the life of your carpet. Most carpet manufacturers recommend professional steam cleaning, which penetrates deep into the carpet fibers and lifts out both dirt and the pollutants that get tracked inside. Steam cleaning also removes most of the moisture, so carpets dry quickly enough for homeowners to resume using them the same day. Between professional carpet cleanings, your carpet may need an emergency spot cleaning. Pet accidents, food or drink spills, and more can often be effectively cleaned with some water and a drop of white vinegar, although many cleaners will also make house calls for smaller spills and hard-to-clean spots like wine or grease stains.

How much does it cost to clean a rug?

Area rugs are typically found in high-traffic areas of the home, like hallways and entryways, so they collect more dirt and stains than simple vacuuming can handle. Similar to carpet cleaning, professionals can come to your home to deep-clean your area rugs. The national average cost for rug cleaning ranges from $80 to $120, but may be higher or lower depending on the rug’s size and fiber type. Rug cleaners generally charge by the square foot; for example, a standard 8-foot by 10-foot rug costs an average of $100 to clean. Natural fiber rugs, such as wool or silk, are usually more expensive to have cleaned than synthetic rugs. A carpeting cleaning company may charge on average $1.50 per square foot to clean a synthetic rug, $2 per square foot for a wool rug, and $3 per square foot for a silk rug. Some delicate rugs need to be washed by hand, which increases the price. Carpet cleaning companies often offer additional services, such as removing odors or applying moth deterrent, which can add 20 cents to 25 cents per square foot.

How much does it cost to clean a carpet?

Carpet cleaning costs vary depending on the type of cleaning, such as steam cleaning, and whether there are any stains that require special treatment. The main cost factors are the square footage of the carpet and the material it’s made from. The national average carpet cleaning price ranges from $100 to $130 for a typical suburban home, but steam cleaning prices start at an average of $120. In general, professional carpet cleaning ranges from an average of 20 cents to 50 cents per square foot, depending on where you live. Many companies have a minimum fee or room requirement — such as two rooms for an average of $40 each — and will charge more to clean carpeted stairs or a second floor. Finally, the carpet fiber type, density and pile will also affect the cost of cleaning; man-made fibers are stain-resistant and easier to clean, while wool carpeting is sensitive to water and requires more care.
