Coming from a 5 year orchestral background, I thought there was little guitar lessons would have to offer me, but I was quickly proven wrong when I started taking lessons from Mike. The amount of depth I had left untouched was astonishing to discover as we started with scales ranging from blues to classic, chord structure and how they were interchangable, and later applying my newfound knowledge to songs from artists like Clapton, Stevie Ray, Chili Peppers and many more. My only regret is not having started lessons sooner.

Want to learn guitar in a casual but constructive environment? Try taking a few lessons from Josh Von Mink. When I first became interested, Josh not only offered his advice but actually helped me pick out an acoustic guitar. He found me a sturdy and capable Cort that didn't set me back too much. Then he encouraged me to learn a few things from him. When I finally got around to seriously wanting to spend time with my guitar, Josh was willing to show me the ropes. He is all about the student learning at his or her own speed. We played a few songs by artists we both liked so that the lessons were immediately fun. When I asked for more structure, he was happy to outline some chords and notes on paper for "homework." You know there is always more to learn, and Josh is eager to see people want to connect the dots and move on to the next stage. Most of all, learning from and playing with Josh Von Mink is fun because he has a genuine passion for the guitar and the songwriting that follows from it. He's not afraid to push his students to do a little more than they are capable of, but he's by no means pushy or demanding. He shows off his skill so that you know he's a worthy teacher, but he won't make you feel stupid for not being able to do what he's trying to show. Take advantage of Josh's service and start strumming some tunes! - Levi, Minneapolis, MN

Kathleen was incredible! She's incredibly easy to work with and very personable. Her band members are also great! We organized a work party, and immediately thought of Kathleen and her band because they played upbeat, fun, and music that people could dance to. She was easy to contact. We had a limited amount of space, but she was able to fit the 7-piece band, which was amazing. People at work are still raving about the music. She's incredibly friendly, as are her band members. Overall, a 10/10 experience.

I have listened to, been in production with, and performed with Greg several times for over 10 years. He has played, written, scored, transposed, adapted, and collaborated to create exactly what was needed for each event, show, and gathering. As a pianist and guitarist he seems a bottomless well of ability and genre capability; he can rock Bon Jovi and then perform an Arvo Pärt piece that will bring you to tears. Pop, classical, jazz, funk, modern, quiet, loud, solo, ensemble, and more. Greg is talented, experienced, collaborative, and a pleasure to work with and to listen to.

If Tim Price is not "Guitar God" be is at least an Archangel. I booked him weekly for over six years. Smooth yet fiercely technical fingerwork combined an almost photographic mental music catalogue make Price a "not-to-be-missed" performer. Put this much talent into a guy with a heart as big as Minnesota and you have a commercially viable product that never abandons artistry. Wish I was his agent. #Timprice #music #fingerstyle #guitars #godzilla #musicbyTimPrice

Mr. Correa played at our wedding on 12/28/2012. The addition of a harp to the ceremony made for a very romantic event. I also purchased music CD's as gifts for our guests. Reuben also played a children's medical benefit at my request. Some of the medical staff remembered him from the hospital, as he played there a few years back, and commented how much they enjoyed hearing his soothing harp music during children's surgeries. Reuben's passion for playing the harp and his artistic ability are amazing and they shine through in his music. I highly recommend him for any event.

I know Gabe on several levels. As a patron to local live music venues, Gabe is as good as it gets. His musical talents with percussive fingerstyle acoustic guitar are remarkable. His interpretive covers of other artists’ hits are as good as the original, often more interesting. His original music is outstanding. I also know Gabe as a student. My son and I take lessons from him. The variety of fingerstyle music that he can teach is significant. He will go out of his way to learn a song that we want to learn and break it up into smaller, easy to learn segments. He is inspiring, acceptant of our current abilities, picky about doing it correctly, yet always encouraging. He will record each segment, emphasize the proper timing and technique and send the videos to us to help perfect our practice. There are not many guitarists who can teach the complexity of Michael Hedges’ music and break it down to learnable segments. He has a gift as a performer and a coach, but he works hard at it too.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

    • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
    • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
    • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
