Jenna was amazing. She was on time (a few minutes early for set-up) and had everything ready to go including a special themed balloon for the birthday boy. She did not break any balloons while working with them which had happened at a previous party with a different artist. Every child was happy with Jenna and every child liked Jenna a lot. I will hire her again and recommend her to all the families I know with parties coming up.

I did extensive research on a henna artist and Lisa seemed like a sure bet - turns out she exceeded my expectations and I can't wait to have her out again to do more work. Lisa is professional, great to get along with and extraordinarily talented.

Our company had two each for face painters, balloon artists, and caricature artists. Every person was great! They seemed to enjoy the day and engaged the people with whom they interacted - adults and kids. As a planner, it was fun to provide activities that families might not experience due to cost. I highly recommend using their services.

Zahara was extremely friendly and helpful. Having spent almost 3 hours with her on my bridal henna I am so thankful to have had a person as enjoyable as here. The work was fantastic. She prides herself on the detail. She also did henna on my aunts cousins and friends. In 2 hours she was able to henna 25 people. Everyone just loved her. They had so much fun talking to her and about the upcoming wedding. Zahara clearly loves what she does and wants her clients to enjoy their experience.

Amy is not only kind and compassionate but she is a brilliant artist. She is also trustworthy, dependable and consistent! I go to her for all my henna needs! I've gotten henna tattoos from Amy both from shows which were just beautiful and I've also had private in home henna art done for special occasions. Every time I wear her art, all my friends and acquaintances will compliment and comment on how beautiful it is. One last thing... her custom pieces are just impressive. I sent her some pictures of my cats and her rendition was breathtaking!!

My husband and I have a HUGE Christmas party every year with up to 100 people in attendance. We hire Erin every year to come and do caricatures for our guest and she does amazing work and is wonderful to work with. It has truly become a tradition and our guests look forward to seeing her and getting their yearly caricature as a keepsake of our party. Erin’s work well exceeds other artists caricatures.

Kings Crossing/Frogtown Square hosted National Night Out in the past two years. This is a charitable event, an outreach to our neighborhood. Lisa very graciously offered her time and talent for this event. Those in attendance loved her work...one little girl said she was never going to wash her face. I highly recommend this talented artist for any children's or adult event.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does a henna tattoo stay on?

Typically a henna tattoo stays on anywhere from one to three weeks. Henna artists work with henna paste, also called mehndi, which dyes the skin for a short period of time. An important part of Indian culture, the use of henna has become increasingly popular in the United States, with henna artists providing henna tattoos for weddings, as event entertainment and for other special events. Henna artists typically apply their designs to the palms and backs of the hands, the wrists, up to the elbows, and from the feet up to the knees. To preserve the rich color of your henna tattoo and help it set, avoid water as much as possible within the first 24 hours of application. The color will be richest during the first week. Brides may want to have their henna tattoos applied one or two days before the wedding for optimal results.

What is the meaning behind henna tattoos?

Henna tattoos, as they are called in the United States, have a long tradition in Indian, African and Middle Eastern cultures. For centuries, the leaves of dried henna plants have been ground into a fine paste to be used as a temporary and nontoxic skin dye. This form of body decoration has been used in celebrations, weddings and ceremonial rites of passage in many cultures. Often in Hindu weddings, henna artists decorate the hands and feet of the bride (and at times the groom) with intricate designs. In some Muslim traditions, henna artists paint women with henna designs as they are in their final stages of pregnancy. In the United States, popular culture has adopted this beautiful body art and henna artists provide brides (and sometimes grooms) with temporary henna tattoos. Henna artists are also a popular choice for entertainment at corporate events, birthday parties, bachelorette parties and festivals. Henna artists may charge anywhere from $10 to $300 per hour.

How much does it cost to get a henna tattoo?

Nationally, the average cost to hire a henna artist is between $100 and $180 per hour. Rates will vary by location and the experience of the individual henna artist; it’s possible to find artists who charge less than $50 per hour. Some henna artists charge an hourly rate, especially for corporate events or festivals where they are providing service to multiple people within an hour. They may also charge flat rates for bridal and wedding services or special events. Here are some examples of average cost:

    • Hourly rate: $65-$85 or more per hour. Price is dependent on event size and number of attendees.
    • Starting rate for minimal palm designs: $15 or more.
    • Henna tattoos covering the hands and wrist and bottom of feet up to the ankle: $175.
    • Henna tattoos covering the hands to the mid-arm and feet to above the ankle: $300.
    • Henna tattoos covering the hands to the elbow and the feet to the knee: $450.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
