These guys are definitely an A+ operation in my book. They showed up early, worked nearly non-stop, and even explained things to me as they were going along, all with a lighthearted attitude. Prior to hiring and arrival on site work, Dusty put up with all my questions, ideas, thoughts, and suggestions, and never once avoided my calls or emails. His communication and honesty throughout this process sealed the deal that I had chosen the right company for my porch project! Thanks S2F!! :)

I’m so pleased to find Kel Heyl on Thumbtack as now he will be available to even more homeowners. Kel has done work on and in my home since 2004, from very large projects to small tasks. I love that he is such a careful, creative and meticulous craftsman – his work is never slapdash. I’ve always been very happy with the results, and can recommend him highly to anyone interested in having work done on their home by somebody who knows what he’s doing, and will do it well. Built screened porch, based on his own design. (2004) Removed a chain-link fence and posts. (October 2004) Removed textured ceilings in living room and dining room. Ripped and installed new molding for both rooms. Installed a chandelier. (April 2010) Installed a new entry door to porch, including altering and adapting the jamb. (June 2009) Hung antique coat rack. (2008) Installed a new pre-hung access door for garage. (June 2009) Re-screened porch panels damaged by cat and raccoons. (July 2011) Hung a magnetic knife rack. (February 2012) Re-shingled garage roof, first removing old layers down to bare wood. (August 2012)

Nick and Adam were fantastic to work with. They gave me a very competitive bid, and then did excellent work. I ended up not doing the project I initially posted in Thumbtack, they ended up replacing my house, garage and shed roofs, two porches and the railing on my deck. They kept in touch with me as we scheduled the job, and were here the day they said they'd be here. The roofs were completed in two days, and the porches in one. Adam made sure that all work was completed to my satisfaction, including redoing two things that weren't bad work, I just wanted them done differently. All work was completed on time and on budget. I hope to get them back later this summer to do more projects. Here's a link to my photos since I can't upload them https://www.amazon.com/photos/share/MwgjeFjSbs6JBb5kS1dHlUaV3MESyzU5XFQehtv7CO5

Gerry was great to work with; he responded quickly to my request and arranged a time to see our job and give a quote within days. His quote was very detailed, giving a good idea of cost of supplies needed, as well as his estimated labor. In the end, the total was only 7% more than the estimate. Once we gave the go ahead, he was right on time with his estimated start and finish date. Gerry did quality work in repairing rotting beams on a swing set, stripping/sanding/re-staining front porch and railings, fixed sunken patio pavers, repaired a gate, and a few other misc items. I would recommend Gerry and I would use his services again.

We hired Iron River to build a 15'x18' deck with an additional landing (8 footings). It turned out fabulously! In the early stages - our project manager did a great job with responsiveness and turning around revisions to their bid to match what my wife and I wanted. They also included a warranty on their labor! Their "bid folder" included all of the information a person would want when evaluating a bid so it was pretty easy to decide where Iron River stood among our other bids. The only thing we didn't like was that our project took a long time to get started and we didn't get a whole lot of communication. The challenge with decks is they're at the mercy of the weather. We would have liked more communication during the interim (we waited almost 2 months, but we did sign in mid April while it was still snowing...) between the signed work agreement and actually starting the deck. It was just hard since we had been told initially that we'd be 3 weeks out once the first deck of Iron River's season had started. Scheduling aside, once the project started it was smooth sailing start to finish. I'm a big fan of communication (if you couldn't tell from above), so it would have been nice to know what they were trying to accomplish over the next couple of days or if they were expecting to pause work for a day (there were days where nobody arrived and the weather was not inhibiting work activities). However, the project start (digging footings) to finish (fascia + inspection) was quite quick even with rainy days. I would definitely recommend Iron River to anyone looking to build a deck, or even some internal house remodeling (but I don't know as much about that).

Carter Custom did a great job adding a new deck to our home. They worked with us on the design, colors, scheduling, and even the cost. The deck adds an awesome living space that we will use all the time...and know that it will last for a long time.

Outdoor Solutions was an exceptionally easy company to work with for our deck project that was completed in February, 2017. I would like to share a little detail about the positive process my family experienced. Jim (co-owner with his wife) was very quick to respond to our request for quotes. After our initial phone call, he visited our house within a couple of days. It probably would have been sooner but our busy family schedule wouldn’t allow that week. At our first meeting, on a Friday evening with 2 crazy boys running about, Jim met with us to discuss our design ideas. We discussed our budget, the design and materials we preferred. Jim was very helpful, in a very polite and consultative manner, to work with us on different design options. My family and I recently moved to a new area within the Twin Cities and Jim was really helpful in educating us on city building codes that were important in our design considerations. At the conclusion of our initial meeting we received a reasonable, competitive, very honest quote. As of the following Monday, we decided to choose Outdoor Solutions. Within a couple of days, the permit was obtained from the city and the design specifications submitted to our HOA on a Thursday. All prerequisite approvals were received on Sunday and footings were drilled the following Wednesday and filled with concrete either Thursday or Friday the same week. The construction crew began building our deck before the concrete cured, using temporary supports and was finished within 2 days. After approximately 5 days for the concrete footings to cure, the crew returned and spent about a half day building the permanent support posts. On the concrete footings…I live in MN and in February the ground is frozen solid and had snow on the ground when the footings were drilled, hence the 5 days to cure (this was expected before we started the build). A little about the crew that built our deck…the guys were awesome for the following reasons: 1. I have 2 boys, 6 and under. On day 1, the crew was on a first name basis with my boys. For some context, we have a lookout with the patio door being elevated about 8 feet. My kids would crack the patio door and talk with the crew every morning before school and daycare. The crew was very engaging, polite and interacted with our kids as if they were their own; after school was the same! 2. Every morning they said they would be here at 7:30, they were and were a few minutes early each morning. 3. One of the days, the forecast called for snow but instead steady drizzling rain. The crew didn’t flinch and powered through the conditions. I was at home that day and stated my admiration for working through the conditions and they didn’t seem phased. Lastly, February MN weather can be unforgiving yet that didn’t affect the quality and workmanship. Outdoor Solutions and their quality of service was outstanding. Their owner and crew were as good as it gets. I’ve worked with several contractors on various projects in my over the past 15 years. While not each project was the same, Outdoor solutions was the most reliable, honored their commitments 100%, and was the most genuine and honest of them all. Upon final inspection by the city, the inspector told me the build quality is better than most and exceeded several building code standards. Since July 2016, we’ve interviewed 12 contractors with 5 of them being in 2017. We did our homework and chose the best company for our project, design requirements and budget! Outdoor Solutions is a small locally-owner business. My parents were small business owners where hand-shakes, honesty, reliability, hard work and sense of community were valued. Outdoor solutions is all of these and more!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
