Working with Rita has been a phenomenal experience. She is professional, knowledgeable, but more than that she is an excellent instructor. You explain what you need and she has a resolution. Rita makes training easy. She makes sure you know how to work with your dog. Her hands on training gives you the knowledge and confidence to continue training. Both you and your dog will benefit from working with Rita. It’s reward based and fun. Don’t worry if you’re not getting it Rita is a phone call away. Her time with you is not just a schedule and we’ll talk about it on your next visit. She is there in between to guide you. I can not say enough about this remarkable woman and Canine Revival.

Lori Brown of Browns Dog Training, is a very unconventional trainer. Lori devotes her entire day and home to the animals she trains, boards, provides day care for and clearly is fulfilling her passion to animals. Our Hunter, loved staying with Lori for two weeks and was still happy to see us when we came to pick him up. Believe me, Lori is an excellent trainer and so passionate about her four legged family. I suggest you at least meet Lori. She is unconventional but fantastic with dogs. We will bring Hunter back just so he can see Lori again.

Our initial training session was awesome! Lynne has a very calming personality and clearly explained what she was doing and why. I am looking forward in continuing our training with Lynne and alone. I feel the husband and I will be very successful. Xena and Emma also say thank you for training our humans. We feel so much better having mom and dad in control. :-)

Sally was very nice to work with and my dog Lucy enjoyed working with her too. Lucy liked to jump up a lot and Sally taught us techniques that showed results right away. She had great tips and suggestions on how to care for her. We plan to hire Sally if Lucy ever needs care while we are out of town.

I hired Lindsay to work with my dog, Rocky, on basic obedience. He was very territorial of parts of the house and needed work with some basic commands. Lindsay showed me how to communicate better with Rocky. I now know what he needs from me in order to feel safe and this has had a huge impact on his behavior. Lindsay uses positive reinforcement and counter-conditioning. She keeps the dog feeling safe and positive, showing him what he should be doing instead of what he should not be doing. She uses treats to get her points across to the dog. She does not use bark or shock collars or anything that would make the dog feel uncomfortable. I am very happy with my experience so far, and will continue using Kinney K9 Academy.

Roxanne is amazing! She has worked so diligently with our family and our puppy's needs. Any problem we were having, she had a way to address it. The best part is, it works!! She has a miracle solution for every instance. Roxanne is always willing to listen and do what is best for the family and the dog. Her techniques are easy to follow and always positive! She has reassured our family that we are making progress and are doing what is best for our puppy. We have seen wonderful changes in our puppy and are excited to continue to work with Roxanne. :)

Jenny gives my dogs (which I treat as my children) the best care possible every time I call upon her to be there to provide care for them. I believe what makes Jenny the best is she has pets of her own and treats all pets under her care as if they were hers. I started using her to watch my pets at my home where she would stop in 3 times daily and it has now progressed for my longer trips to where she watches them at her home conveniently located in Golden Valley which has ample space and a beautiful large fenced back yard for my dogs to play in. A+ rating and I highly recommend using Jenny for your dog/cat care needs.

      About

Hi, there! Animals are my passion and my career. I have my degree in animal science with specialization in nutrition, health, and animal behavior/training from the University of Minnesota. I have worked at a vet clinic for three years during college. I have experienced working at PetSmart for over a year as a groomer and in sales in guiding new pet parents along their exciting new journey. I also gained experience in caring for reptiles, avian animals, and small mammals for those clients looking for care for other pets at home. During my last two years in high school, I worked at a pet resort and excelled in daycare and boarding services. I just graduated from college and have a lot of energy and TLC to give to your pet, and I hope you consider me for your next pet sitter. Please feel free to text/call my cell, or contact me via my email as well; I will return your call/email very promptly. I am available overnights and have a very flexible schedule.

      About

I am a certified dog trainer, and I use only positive training methods. The clicker/reward is a great fun way to work with a dog! Being a good leader versus using dominance or pack leader is more productive and teachable. I also have a dog rescue and work with problems that rescues sometimes bring with them. I am a support system during any training process.

      About

I provide pet care, dog walking, and pet sitting. I love animals and believe they should have the best care that they can.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
