Vanessa C. says, "I have had no luck for over a year trying to get a plumber to my house to fix a leak and install a water softener. After being let down countless times by several different plumbers I was losing hope. In my last ditch effort to find someone, I downloaded the thumbtack app. Honest Abe's was the first to come up on the list and all of their reviews were great so I immediately reached out. It was night time on a weekend so definitely not within normal business hours so I was not expecting a response. To my surprise, I got a response almost right away; I was floored! I explained the work I needed done and we set up a free estimate for that Monday between 2-4pm. Now, I was skeptical because I've been stood up so many times by so many "professionals" but I got a call at 1:41 saying my technician was on his way! They sent a picture of Tim (master plumber) with a little snippet about him; I found that comforting as my husband is gone during the day and I'm here alone. He arrived at 2:50pm; actually within the time window!! I could not believe it! Tim was very efficient and thorough as I walked him thru the house pointing out everything I was going to need. He was very patient and kind and really cared about the issues adopting them as his own. I was so impressed that I signed up for a 5 year partnership with them and also the premium package. It's a lot of money up front but it definitely is worth every penny and will pay itself off within 2 years easily. He got me on the schedule for that Thursday to get everything done. Again, they were very communicative and kept me believing in them as I've clearly grown to have trust issues with professionals actually showing up around here. I'm from Boston where there is far more competition and businesses can't afford to be lackadaisical with their attentiveness to clients or their customer service because they lose that client to a competitor. Honest Abe's is hands down the best company I've had the pleasure of doing business with here in Missouri and I've been here 3.5 years so that says something. They arrived on time on Thursday and Tim brought another young gentleman with him, Cruz. They started right in on the work at hand and they were very mindful of trying to keep their work area clean and be as respectful as possible to my home. They were here at 10am and even when there was an issue with a part on my water softener Cruz did not give up or display any signs of frustrations whatsoever. He calmly filled me in that he needed to meet with another technician 30 minutes out to get a part and that he would be right back to finish the job. He got back and worked diligently to complete the task at hand. When he was finished he was very good about explaining all that he had done and let me know that if there was anything at all that I needed, regardless of the time of day, to reach out to them and let them know and they would take care of me. I know I'm not their only client but they sure made me feel like I was very important and I really appreciated that. They not only do plumbing; they do electric, mold, heating, and cooling. Honest Abe's is essentially a one stop for all; I could not have thought of a better name for their company! My husband is military and we're going to be stationed in South Carolina come February so knowing that my home is in good hands while we're gone for 5+years provides me with a level of comfort and a feeling of security beyond compare. 10/10 I would recommend Honest Abe's. They are the absolute best! Thank you for taking care of me!!"See more

Is it worth it to remodel a kitchen?

Remodeling or renovating your kitchen can be worth the time, effort and money  — especially if you plan to sell your home. A kitchen remodel is among the most appealing types of remodeling projects for potential buyers, according to the National Association of Realtors. In fact, some realtors report that a kitchen remodel has helped close a sale. This type of remodeling is also valuable because it can build a stronger desire to be in your home.

How do I hire a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

The secret to hiring the best contractor(s) for your kitchen remodel is to compare several professionals’ customer reviews, ratings, specialities, services and prices. You can do this by searching online for the best kitchen remodelers near you

When you search online, you can quickly view important information about the contractors on their profiles. Read through the customer reviews, and look for profiles that feature before-and-after photos from the contractor, as well as their past clients. Inspect those photos closely to gauge the contractors’ craftsmanship.

You should also make sure the contractor is properly licensed and insured in your area. Some state governments regulate licensure for contractors, while some don’t. Check licensing requirements in your state.

Before you hire anyone, contact at least contractors to discuss the scope of your kitchen remodel. And request written estimates from each contractor.

What is the average cost of a kitchen remodel?

The average cost of a kitchen remodel is $12,961. However, you should always get a cost estimate from a general contractor or kitchen remodeler near you when planning your renovations.

The cost of upgrading your kitchen depends on a variety of factors. The first is whether you’re doing a small, medium or large remodel. Where you live also matters, with expensive cities correlating with more expensive kitchen renovation costs. The cost will also increase if you’re altering the footprint of your kitchen, changing the location of plumbing and fixtures and/or installing expensive materials like granite countertops.

How can I save money on my kitchen remodel?

To keep your kitchen remodel costs as low as possible, avoid making changes after construction has begun. This will reduce the amount of wasted time and material on the part of the contractor and help you avoid extra charges.

Double-check all measurements to make sure you order the right size appliances, cabinets and materials. Also, try to work within your existing kitchen’s footprint to avoid having to pay a plumber or electrician to completely redo your layout.

Research all of your options for flooring, tiles, countertops and appliances. Try to get an expert’s opinion before purchasing any material if you’re unsure about the quality.

Finally, get a few cost estimates from at least three contractors near you before you hire anyone to take on your project.

What should you not do in a kitchen remodel?

Common mistakes in kitchen remodeling include choosing fragile or low-quality materials and appliances. Attempting to DIY the entire renovation is another mistake, especially if you lack the expertise and training to do so.

A few other mistakes include:

  • Not setting a budget
  • Not thoroughly researching your options for materials, kitchen appliances, etc.
  • Not comparing cost estimates from multiple contractors, electricians, plumbers, etc.
  • Not measuring the areas in your kitchen, as well as the desired appliances

If you’re not sure where to start, contact a top-rated kitchen remodeler who can help you plan your kitchen remodel.

Where do I start when remodeling a kitchen?

When preparing to remodel a kitchen, start your planning process with the space planning phase. Before worrying about what the kitchen will look like, focus on where things will be located for workflow and function. In what order will your sink, stovetop and countertop go? Where will the refrigerator be? Then, you can start thinking about the materials, appliances and overall design for your kitchen.

If you have a solid idea of the design you want, contact multiple kitchen remodeling contractors and services to find out how much your project will likely cost and which professional is best-suited for the project.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.
