Specific behaviors to address
Sorry this pro can’t do your job, but we know other pros who can.
Introduction: I practice only force-free, positive reinforcement training. The science behind canine behavior and training has exploded over the last 5-10 years, and that science supports my training methodology as the most long-term effective and humane method for training a dog on desired behaviors, eliminating unwanted behaviors, and building a positive relationship with our dogs. Unfortunately, there are still quite a few trainers who practice outdated, punishment-based methods. I love to help others improve the relationship with their dogs by learning how to train wanted behaviors and eliminate problem behaviors. Most people are thrilled to learn that force-free training methods are the most effective and result in a better relationship with their dogs.

We love Bill and the work he has shared with us over the past two months. We schedule about very two weeks and we aren't finished yet!!. His interaction is very positive, even when we are asking for repeating information. He has provided us with tools as well as "clues" and has gone out of his way to meet the goals we have set. His interaction with our dog is terrific and she has fun while learning. He is always on time, prepares and sends an agenda for the session and follows up with any material or questions that have been asked. We wouldn't change a thing!!!

Bill is a very patient and competent trainer who truly knows the benefits of positive reinforcement training. I have recommended him to several friends and neighbors. We have renewed our contract several times.

Bill Giese is one of the kindest and most competent people with whom I have worked. It is not easy to allow someone in your home and make yourself vulnerable enough for constructive criticism to help you improve the training of your pet. Bill skillfully accomplished this without ever making me feel belittled. Even more importantly, Bill got my wife and two children involved with helping Coco work on her challenges, and our own. I am a better parent to my children because of Bill showing me how to be a better resource for my pet and fifth family member. Thanks, Bill!

Doug and I are thrilled at the progress we and our dog, Cooper, have made as a result of attending the Reactive Rover Rehab class taught by Bill and Lisa. Fundamentally, the class gave us confidence in handling trigger situations and it taught Cooper to learn to associate something positive with those same situations. The class teaches a positive-reinforcement training method in a safe environment with controlled exposure to triggers. We were provided with a class syllabus or agenda prior to the first class. Classes always started on time. We enthusiastically recommend this class and we are definitely interested in a Rover Rehab 2 to keep us progressing!

Reactive Rover Rehab with Bill & Lisa equipped us with the tools to help recondition Sally to calm down & present desirable behaviors, such as sitting & giving us attention, rather than barking at triggers on our walks. Her behavior has improved & so has our ability to work with her. The class offered plenty of practice opportunities for every level, & we took advantage of other activities in the homework packet as well. We highly recommend this class for anyone with a reactive dog!

FAQs

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I have a 20 - 30 minute telephone conversation with potential new customers to understand their training objectives. For more serious behavior problems, I ask potential new customers to complete a behavior questionnaire for their dog and may do an in-home behavior assessment before developing a behavior modification and training plan for the customer's dog.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I am a professional member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT). I am also a Certified Professional Dog Trainer - Knowledge Assessed (CPDT-KA). This certification was earned through the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT). All certified trainers must earn continuing education credits to maintain their designations. I stay current with the latest developments in canine behavior and training, attending numerous national and local conferences, reading, and web-based training. I also belong to a local network of trainers who share best practices and lessons learned.

  • What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

I started down the path of training dogs when I adopted a 4-month old puppy off the street nine years ago. She had not been properly socialized to other dogs or people, and presented several issues that prompted me to seek professional dog training. I was fortunate to connect with a trainer associated with the Greater St. Louis Training Club. Since that time, I completed the club's six-month trainers course, served as president of the club for two terms, and have been the lead trainer for puppy, adult dogs, and dogs with issues (reactive and shy dog) classes. I'm still actively training with the club in addition to operating By My Side Dog Training.
