Introduction: IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO ALL READING: During these trying times, with businesses shuttering, paychecks missing, and much of the population practicing social-distancing at home, many of us will feel anxious, fearful for our health and those of our loved ones, and worried about our jobs and financial stability going forward. But that doesn't mean we should just slink into a corner or give up. Like all difficult times, our society will emerge and grow strong again. But what can we do for ourselves and our families in the meantime? For me, I try to stay in touch with friends and family online and calls. I'm cooking a lot, and ordering everything I need online. I've moved all of my business online, too, where 75% of it already was. And I am trying to catch up on career enrichment for myself with reading articles I've stockpiled and rereading relevant texts from graduate seminars. And here is where you come in: As you know, this national health emergency is resulting in dramatic business slowdown and massive disruption, and even though this exponentially multiplies uncertainty, that also typically means potentially extraordinary opportunities for those who are well-prepared. When the clouds start to clear, companies will start a long, strong recovery, which means massive re-hiring. Many of those positions could be up for grabs as some people choose to retire early, work elsewhere, or join the gig economy. Will you use this time to improve your chances when opportunity opens up before you? How you can prepare: 1) Is your resume fresh? Does it positively market you, rather than simply document the chronology of your roles and tasks? Does it provide examples of your achievements, and the impact that they had? Does it look professional, or just "neat." 2) Learn how to conduct a targeted search with networking. You have probably heard that up to 80% of all jobs are filled through casual networking--someone in the company learns of an opening and reaches out to a friend. Or you proactively reach out with a fresh resume to those people who know a lot of people. Depending only on job boards and company alerts for open positions means that you start out competing with dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of others. Networking and a little investigative work can bypass these and possibly put your resume on the hiring manager's desk. 3) Perfect your interviewing skills. This means understanding what employers are really looking for, how to use your resume as an interview guide, and how to answer those uncomfortable behavioral or situational questions with confidence and authority. These actions will help insulate you from the competition. They are also the same moves everyone who wants to manage their careers proactively should do, even in the best of times. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me for answers. You can reach me through information in my LinkedIn profile, or through Thumbtack. And as always, best of luck! Allan Smith, M.A., Career Management Professional-Practitioner (CMP) Thank you for checking out my profile! Most coaches either have a successful career, an advanced degree, or a coaching certification, but I have all three. More importantly, the more my clients get to know me, the more they appreciate how hard I work for them and how much I care about their success. Having achieved a Master's and additional doctoral training in Behavioral Psychology means that no matter what your current circumstances- bad job, bad divorce, bad relationship, unemployed, anxieties or bad habits that hold you back--I can coach you through it to a better, higher functioning, more successful place. As a Certified Career Coach, I can write a great custom-made resume that markets you to the targets you choose, and I know how to provide correct and encouraging career advice, strategies, and interview training. For Resume and Career Clients: With every resume purchase, I include a minimum 30-minute coaching session as part of the process to make sure we unearth the real value and impact you have brought to your jobs. Being a certified Career Coach means I have the answers to the questions about a job search and can teach you skills and actions to make yourself a great job candidate. Interviewing well is a skill, full of traps and opportunities to mess up. Clients love the interview training I provide, because it not only provides advice, rules to follow, and skill-building, but dramatically boosts self-confidence, without which it is difficult to shine in an interview. Not only are my prices competitive, but you can benefit from my training and experience to guide you. And if you read my reviews, you'll see that my customers are MORE than satisfied. For Life Coaching Clients: If you are a non-parent or Dad going through a divorce, understand that a great attorney is very important, but they do not help you with many crucial post-breakup situations: how to deal with your money; how to make sure you are a major and positive influence on your children; how to fend off anger and resentment, within you and from others; how to keep major life changes from interfering with your career. I struggled for years after my own divorce, letting forces around me push me this way and that. I wish I had had the guidance I needed to talk over choices and decisions, and the encouragement to move forward in a healthier and more productive way. Now I can at least assist others to get back on track.

Life Coaching

Allan’s career coaching has been invaluable to me. His background as a coach, combined with his education including organizational behavior and psychology, and his real-world experiences as owner of a company and President of others, blend to provide a unique perspective. Together, we’ve navigated some tricky circumstances in the workplace. He asks the right questions, then helps me to address situations in a healthy and positive way. I started the coaching option as a last resort, realizing that I can’t continue under present conditions. He’s offered me hope and tangible tools. I highly recommend engaging his services to anyone searching to find better…

Life Coaching

I was at a real crossroads trying to more effectively run my own business while also searching for a potential employer that could use my strange collection of skills. Allan helped me narrow my focus in both areas until one emerged as the better option. Sometimes our discussions would be about immediate concerns such as an upcoming interview. Other times we would discuss longer-term goals for my career and life. I eventually landed a fantastic job after honing my resume and working through interview preparation with Allan. If you, like me, have been spinning your wheels and getting nowhere, and could use some focus, direction, and great advice, I highly recommend working with Allan.

Resume Writing

After a few years out of the workforce, I needed A resume update before beginning my job search. Allan Smith promptly responded to my inquiry when I was seeking someone to assist with this task. During both telephone conversations and email correspondence, he was able to capture details of 35 years of my administrative experience in the financial industry. He also broadened my own horizons with respect to my job search. The finished product was a beautiful compilation of both my work history as well as achievements. I would highly recommend Allan Smith for a resume and cover letter project. In addition he also provides career coaching as well as other related services.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

We typically start out with a brief, free phone conversation and soon set an appointment to meet in person or by phone. I coach most of my clients remotely by phone, internet and sometimes video chat throughout the US and overseas.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have an undergraduate degree in Economics, and an M.A. from Washington University in Organizational Behavior. I completed many doctoral courses in graduate education, particularly learning and motivation theory, developmental and clinical psychology, and the psychology of groups and organizing. I more recently was awarded Coaching Certification from the Institute of Career Certification International--the only non-profit international certifying agency that requires a minimum of four years of documented work, a professional sponsor, and rugged qualifying interviews. I also founded a healthcare company and ran it for 10 years, have been President of three companies I didn't own, and Executive Director, Regional Marketing Director and Business Development Director of others.
