Ron was great to work with for my door installation. He was very communicative and professional, and got my project done on time despite an unforeseen issue that put his truck out of his commission.

John repaired a Crawlspace door and installed an upholstered headboard for us. He was knowledgeable and suggested a change on the door that made it work better than before. He was on time, friendly and very careful with our furniture. I would definitely hire John again for jobs around our house.

It was such a pleasure to have Jimmy come to my home to install window sills in the sun room. It is clear that he has genuine passion for his work and has a gift for working with wood. He did a beautiful job for an excellent price, I will be hiring him again in the near future. He responded to my requests and calls right away, worked with my schedule to make it convenient for me, answered all of my many questions, and was very kind and courteous. He has impressive, extensive experience and true talent. Five plus stars, I absolutely highly recommend him!!

I had a sliding patio door installed. The guys had to cut into our brick exterior to make it fit, and they did an excellent job. Had a piece of trim that broke during the process and they came back the next week and replaced it and finished it up. Would use again.

Tim and his crew have now completed 2 jobs for us at our property. The first was to finish installing vinyl shutters and do extensive plaster work on the ceiling of our garage where there was water damage. The second was to do a number of smaller projects related to dog and use damage, from replacing a window sill and baseboards, to installing new wood floor transitions, grout repair and recaulking a shower upstairs. Without exception all of this work was completed to the letter of what we had asked. It was also done in a much quicker manner and more professional manner than my wife or I could have accomplished. Tim was also very responsive with both e-mail and phone communication, and the price was also fantastic. I would highly recommend them for any project you might have as we've been very happy with them on both of our projects.

My husband and I are seniors; we bought an older ranch style home to fit our needs for the balance of our lives. However, the BRs were so small. We contacted Dan. With his guidance we were able to add onto our home; make a beautiful master suite(walk in closet, full bath) and a beautiful "wall of windows" in LR area to look out at the wooded area which has deer, wild turkeys, and many other wild animals moving from one part of the woods to another. The workmanship was outstanding. One can't tell where the roof was tied in. It appears to have been all one unit since original construction. I would recommend Dan for any project, big or small! Love to have him back, when we can get him!

Finished an unfinished 2 car garage. 3D hung sheetrock, replaced an exterior door, installed window trim for 3 windows and painted everything. Good job overall with only a few very minor quality points which would have made it perfect.

I was very impressed with the service I recieved. He came to my home in time and installed my door professionally. The door was not salvageable so he went to Lowes and purchased a new door and frame for me and then installed it. He did not charge me extra for going to get the door, I paid for the door and he still charged me the same quote he had previously quoted. I will us him in my future home projects. Thumbtacks is my new favorite go to in order to find people to assist me with my future home repair needs.

Michael is a nice guy and I would work with him again. He was very responsive and communicated well with app, texts, calls. He was easy to schedule, even with the great distance between our locations. Window replacement look good and he did a good job with cleaning the shattered glass. The only thing that I found a little frustrating was the shift in prices and lack of clarity in the invoice. I believe he gave me an honest price though.

Alex and his team replaced our home's large bathroom window that was damaged by a storm. Alex was great at communication, gave me several options for replacement, and negotiated on cost. He followed up with status updates several times, kept his scheduled install date, and finished the install in just a few hours. I'd definitely recommend his company for home work related to windows.

Bill replied to our initial request to build a small portico roof over our front door. We had some ideas in mind, but appreciated Bill's honesty that some of our plans may not be best for our house. He worked with us to come up with a better plan, and we could not be happier with it. Since we were impressed with him, we asked him to do other repairs from our inspection report. Bill was hard working, honest and did a thorough job. We will definitely contact him again if needs arise!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
