When I placed my project request on Thumbtack, J. Simone Landscaping was the first to respond and Jon came out personally to go over the project with me and give me an estimate. He worked within my budget to come up with the solution that best suited my needs. We agreed on a price and scheduled the work. On the day of the job, Jon and his crew showed up early and went right to work. They did a great job and cleaned up after the job. They did exactly what the said they were going to do and went above and beyond to make sure that I was happy with the job that they had performed. One of the most professional contractors that I have worked with on Thumbtack so far and I have utilized Thumbtack for a lot of projects around my house. I highly recommend J. Simone Landscaping for any of your landscaping needs. They are not a fly-by-night business, so they are not going to be the cheapest quote that you will receive, but they will get the job done right the first time! I have tried cheaper solutions in the past and it always ended up costing me more in the long run. Trust Jon and his team to get your job done and you'll end up saving money down the road!!! Thanks Jon!!!

First Rate! First Class Work & Professionalism! I would highly recommend calling Santiago FIRST! Santiago is honest and upfront, did exactly what was quoted from work quality to price. This job was done over a couple days to include a weekend in-between .. there was never a mess left behind - folks were complementing his work before it was even done! Santiago is the only home maintenance number in my phone - all others were just deleted!

Initially contracted Mr. Garner in regard to getting an estimate on pressure washing my house and extensive concrete patio and wooden structures outdoors, to include a grotto waterfall and 40 by 60 concrete driveway. Dennis responded quickly & came out to my home within 2 days followed by providing an estimate that evening. Of the three estimates received his was the most thorough and reasonable and so I hired him to do the work, scheduling it for October 10 &11, 2016. I particularly appreciated the fact that he had a surface cleaner for my driveway which proved to be most helpful in removing stains and tire marks which had accumulated since installation in 2013. Dennis estimated that the job would take 2 days and require two men to complete and that is exactly how it was done. In addition to the work for which he was hired I added a few additional projects which he readily accepted, to include cleaning gutters and replacing several gutter guards, testing and disconnecting a motion flood light which was no longer working properly, rerouting, replacing and adding additional sprinkler heads in several garden beds and realigning & securing a few loose boards on my decking. He also discovered a problem with my hose and hose reel and readjusted it so that that it now freely moves without restriction. Dennis and his associate showed up when they said they would, worked diligently over the two days, shopped for needed materials, cleaned up after themselves both days and worked to ensure that I was fully satisfied with the job they had done before leaving. I could not be happier or more satisfied with my decision to hire Dennis and in fact we have already agreed that he will return soon in order to install a new basement door. To that end he provided medetailed measurements as to ordering the door and also provided a recommendation for that particular type of door that would best suit my needs and preferences. We have also discussed having him return in the spring of 2017 in order to paint a wraparound fence and replace boards as needed. I found both Dennis and his associate Tony to be very congenial, willing to assist with whatever was necessary, thorough and knowledgeable in answering any questions I had about my home and future projects. In a world where it is sometimes difficult to find a trustworthy reliable handyman I feel that I have hit the jackpot in finding Garner's Home Improvements and I would recommend them without reservation. A very satisfied customer!!

Wow, I could not be more pleased with this job! Randy is a highly competent craftsman who responded in minutes to my inquiry, told me he would try to work me in at the end of that very same day, and fixed my doors in a very quick and efficient manner. He stayed in contact with me throughout the day and showed up exactly when he said he would. Very reasonable price and worked after hours! I have hired many contractors and handymen since my husband passed away, and had sworn off hiring from the internet after some not-so-great experiences. I am so glad I decided to try again. This was a top job and experience, and I will definitely hire Randy again.

I can not say enough great things about my experience with Mago and his team. From the get go the communication was great and the work they did far exceeded my expectations. My father is a general contractor so my quality bar is extremely high and it looks like he did it himself. Mago fixed several areas of damage for me, helped with figuring out where to extend colors for accent and other walls and made sure that we were satisfied before calling it quits. Not only do I plan to hire Tore Expressions again for painting, I am already looking to them for refinishing my laundry room and to clean my gutters. Thank you Mago and team!

Mark and his crew were a salvation and went above and beyond! We had another contractor start the bathroom renovation (found him highly recommended on another 'list') and Mark and his crew cleaned up a deplorable job in two weeks that the other contractor took just shy of two months to make. (Note: We have about 40 photos to back up my statement about the initial job quality). Mark's team was professional, courteous, hard working, knowledgeable, capable, understanding. They were there when they said they would be and professionally completed what they said they would, plus some. I would hire him again in a heartbeat.

Owner is very patient and professional. In my experience I was consulted through each phase of renovation to provide my preference for how to install the tiles and placement of mantle. I thought that was very considerate. The job was done right and on time. I'd hire them again for other home improvement projects in the future. Thanks BRR!

We are looking for a contractor specifically to install a cable style steel railing system for our existing deck. Terry at W.C. Builders told us that he only does the preparation (demo and cleanup of old railing) and sub contracts the installation of this type of railing to American Cable Rail . He was very helpful and gave us the the name and contact phone #. We are now working with American Cable Rail. We are very grateful to Terry from W.C. Builders for his professionalism and his help.

My wife and I had a rental house and were looking to fix it up and sell it. We first got a home inspection and we contacted a few people through thumbtack. We presented our findings to Andrew and he was able to give us a very accurate estimate of how much of the repairs were going to be and also provide a solution that we had not thought of for a water problem. Andrew and his employees were very professional and cleaned up after themselves and did a quality job. Andrew was also willing to help with my complete checklist from the home inspector in order to get my house ready to sell in a very timely manner and I felt like the pricing was very fair. I would highly recommend Andrew and I will use him again once my house sells and I discover projects at my current house.

My husband and I have remodeled five vacation homes in the past three years. All of our expereinces with general contractors have been less than favorable. Western Carolina Remodeling, (Anatolie) Sets the new standard. Anatolie is, by far, the best contractor we have ever worked with. He was punctual and on the job everyday by 8:00 am. He honored his word, was truthful and instead of excuses, had resolutions. He was willing to go above and beyond his scope of his responsibilies. He did whatever he needed to do to finish the project to our expectations. There are few contractors like Anatolie, and his work speaks volumes. I would give him a 10 stars rating if that was an option. If you are contemplating hiring a general contractor, you have found your person in Anatolie. It is refreshing to see a young person in the construction world so responsive and committed. A millon thanks

He was available right when we needed him and he was very prompt. His price was affordable and the quality of work he did was exceptional. His work ethic shows in everything he did. He is also very trustworthy. I will definitely be referring him to friends!

Victor Cruz did an exceptional job in a highly professional manner when I hired him to do two different major repairs on my home. He has also done several smaller jobs. He's now the first person I go-to whenever I need a competent, honest, fairly-priced professional to work on my home. I can honestly recommend him unequivocally as a man who can be trusted to communicate clearly and do a good job.

We had Donnie and his team replace our driveway and side walkway. The work was done as requested, on time and very professionally. The estimate was right on, not a penny over. Donnie was always available to answer any questions. .. which were many. It was a great feeling to know that we were working with people we could trust and that the work would be done correctly. We have already hired Donnie to fence in our back yard and will certainly pass on his name to anyone who asks for a reference. Great contractor, great work, great price.

I needed a major renovation done in 3 weeks. Most contractors I talked to said it was impossible. But then I met Jeremy, and he said not a problem. He and his crew finished the job on time and at the best price. We could not be more satisfied with the job they did. We now have that extra large living room that we needed and not that car port that we did not need. Jeremy is very detail oriented, can produce a solution for the problems that come up, and his crew is friendly and respectful. We highly recommend this contractor.

We met Curtis in the summer of 2014 while working on my home addition as a subcontractor. We were so impressed with his work that we decided to hire him to complete the home addition. He helped us through a very unpleasant building experience with an unlicensed contractor. He took over the job with professional craftsmanship and worked diligently while keeping a clean and safe working environment. Curtis is extremely knowledgeable in all aspects of home building. We will continue to use Curtis for any home repairs or improvements.

I hired CLB to make a design using 2 different colored 3/4 inch hardwood, and select their design and could not be happier!! The finished product is the best I have ever received in all my years of buying and renovating homes, and solid enough to last my lifetime. Even my wife is very pleased, and she is very particular as to workmanship as she has personally renovated houses in the past in a number of cities. Pricing was very fair and lower than other bidders outside of Thumbtack. We also hired this company to enclose our backyard with a 100 running feet of a wooden privacy fence with a double gate on both sides of the house. Gates are strong enough to swing on and will definitively be long lasting through many years. Once again, we receive a superior installation with a number of features that other contractors would not even have not thought to offer. HIRE this contractor who has built many houses and is GREAT for renovation projects of many types.

Wes did a full home renovation for me and my wife and we were beyond impressed. His work speaks for itself but more so than the final outcome, his professionalism, work ethic, and his ability to maximize our budget to ensure we got exactly what we asked for is unmatched. Wes was always prompt and finished the job as he promised he would. We had a few poor experiences with other contractors and didn’t feel they had our best interest at heart when doing the projects we hired them for. With Wes we could tell immediately that he wanted us to be completely satisfied with his work and the work he produced proved that. We wouldn’t trust another contractor in WNC to work in our home. When the time comes to build our next home we will most definitely call on awesome and Looking Glass Builders.

Working with Adam and Hendrickson Contruction was a true pleasure, especially after all the problems we had trying to find someone to take on the job of adding our addition to our house. From the get go he was very upfront and honest about his time frame and his estimates; also taking the time to thoroughly go over the estimates and answering all our questions (we had plenty). He made the home building process stress free from the start of getting all permits to finishing out our house getting us ready to move in. Adam and his crew have amazing attention to detail and when/if a problem came up on design aspects he always had several options for us to review. We truly love the work he did to make our house amazing but it was also a pleasure working with and honest, reliable contractor. If I could give him 10 stars I would and I highly recommend him for any home project you have.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
