Todd was great to work with. He purchased the water heater wholesale and installed it at a very reasonable rate. He was also very knowledgeable about water heaters and was able to answer any of our questions. We highly recommend him.

Talked to gal in office. They were out that same day (December 23), and we couldn't get the leak to happen (we were watching it). I called back the next day (Christmas Eve). They came out again, and replaced the faucet that day. Matt did a great job. Very helpful and very professional. He was willing to take time on the project, even though it was afternoon on Christmas Eve. He helped me to pick out a faucet, as it required replacement. I'm pleased with his work. He also did some courtesy checks (system pressure, hot water heater and expansion tank). He was barely finished and on to the next job, when the office called again to check up on how things went during the job. The only thing is the price was a bit high. But, we're paying for the office staff, too. After being burned by independent contractors in the past, I really appreciate the check up and friendly communication that the office provided.

Sorry for late review, I thought I left review the day the job was complete. I recommend this guy to anyone. He saved me thousands of dollars diagnosing my issue. Instead of looking out for his pocket he looked out for mines telling me what was wrong with my water heater versus telling me I needed a new one. 5 star without a doubt.

Santiago responded to a request that was uniquely challenging. He initially responded just to remove tiling enclosing a 2nd fl bathtub, bc the tiles prevented a fix of a leaky faucet seeping water through below kitchen ceiling. I accepted Santiago’s offer to do the faucet repair as well bc he so clearly knew what he was talking about in plumbing repair. It ended up saving us a lot of money to have just him finish the job, bc tile repair & then 2nd trip out by a large plumbing outfit would’ve been expensive. Santiago did the job for such an INCREDIBLY good price that we paid him more & will be contacting this highly skilled “generalist” (also does dry wall, painting, etc.) very soon.

Water heater went out. Quick response to inquiry for repair. Picked up water for us at Home Depot, installed it and hauled away old one. Also checked next day to make sure we had hot water. Prompt responses and constant communication. We have found us a handyman! Thanks so much.

Tim and his crew have now completed 2 jobs for us at our property. The first was to finish installing vinyl shutters and do extensive plaster work on the ceiling of our garage where there was water damage. The second was to do a number of smaller projects related to dog and use damage, from replacing a window sill and baseboards, to installing new wood floor transitions, grout repair and recaulking a shower upstairs. Without exception all of this work was completed to the letter of what we had asked. It was also done in a much quicker manner and more professional manner than my wife or I could have accomplished. Tim was also very responsive with both e-mail and phone communication, and the price was also fantastic. I would highly recommend them for any project you might have as we've been very happy with them on both of our projects.

I was having significant plumbing issues that went on for quite some time - I had other plumbers out who did all kinds of things from trying to manually clear the clogs to replacing toilets to diverting my plumbing through my attic! Still had difficulties with back ups and drainage issues. Then we got hit with a massive water bill. I called Home Services of the Triad and they sent out their master plumber, Mike Young. He knew right away that it was a problem with the main line - he handled all the details for replacing the main line pipe from communicating with the city to hiring a backhoe to the replacement of the pipe and even the clean up and grading/re-seeding of my yard. I ended up getting a full credit for my water bill and now everything works perfectly!

I hired Justin through Thumbtack to look at installing a new electric water heater. Justin was able to come out, look at what I was wanting to get done and provide a good suggest on how to proceed. Justin completed the job in a very timely manner, was able to work around my schedule, cleaned up after finishing the job and his work was perfect. Justin communicated by email and phone and did so in a professional and timely manner. He showed up when he said he would and followed up perfectly. I have him listed in my contacts so that I can and will hire him to complete a few other jobs that I have planned.

We had a drain that was cracked and causing water to back up next to our basement. Perry came out the day I posted the job on Thumbtack and talked me through the problem and various ways to solve it. The solution and price we landed on was very reasonable. He came back on the day he promised and completed the job. He then walked me through pictures he'd taken of his work before he buried the drain again. Overall, Perry came across as very thorough and trustworthy, and I would have zero hesitation seeking his help again.

The team at Precision Plumbing are wonderful. Marvin and Dan were very responsive and professional. I had a difficult job when our main line to the city’s water supply began leaking somewhere between our house and the access near the road. Dan worked tirelessly and relentlessly to fix the issue. They are dedicated and driven, and their prices are very competitive. I highly recommend them and I am happy to say that after 10 years in Greensboro, we have now found our go-to plumbers!

Great tile work, okay plumbing work. Didn't clamp pipe to stud, so shower arm wobbles now. Installed pex for the tub spout, should have been copper. Water wouldn't turn hot, so I had to take apart mixing valve to adjust. Overall, for tile work, I definitely would hire again.

George certainly emphasizes customer service. From the beginning, he answered all of my questions and was very helpful with suggestions concerning the best method of repair. He replaced a gas control valve on my water heater but also resolved some additional issues, ensuring its proper operation. His vast level of experience is obvious. You cannot go wrong if you select this individual for your service needs.

Courtney from North East Services did some excellent work for me on short notice on a Saturday. My upstairs attic A/C system wasn't kept in good shape (by previous owner) when I had bought my home; one-day, water backed up in the A/C emergency pan and leaked through my ceiling. The next day (a hot hot Saturday), I located North East Services on Thumbtack and Courtney came by same-day after giving me a good detail estimate. He diagnosed multi issues with my upstairs A/C unit: His thourough explanation gave me the peace of mind of knowing exactly what the problems were. There were multiple issues that Courtney fixed for me on his trip out: bad electrical connection on A/C fan, incorrectly mounted A/C water overflow shutoff mechanism (leading to ceiling damage), then he proceeded to clean out the A/C drainage hose and check the function of the A/C compressor outside (he added one pound freon). I would recommend Courtney to work on your HVAC; he's skilled, articulate, and fair on price!. Eric

We were moving into a house knowing there was an existing hot water pressure problem to be fixed and a speculative quote from Lloyd. Lloyd quickly found a nickel in the incoming line to the water heater and saved us money in the process. In the future, we will definitely be calling Lloyd first and referring him to everyone!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

    • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
    • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
    • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
    • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
    • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

    • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
    • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
    • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
