V reliable, easy to work with, great job on the power wash -- 5 stars for that, would hire again. The patio step repair work was honestly closer to 3 stars, but in fairness, we had a family emergency in the middle of it and had to leave him to finish without further direction. Combined rating: 4 stars.

Sergio was great! I needed him to come do a quick change of my ceiling fan, install a flush mount light and repair my outside porch light. Even after an unexpected long day, Sergio still made it to my house and did all the repairs since we are under a time crunch to list our house. He also took it upon himself to repair a light fixture in our home that he saw on his own, without charging me more. A very good experience and extremely reasonable pricing.

Dakydes provided moving services for us in November. We where very pleased with their service. Although we where only moving 2 miles they took great care in wrapping our furniture in bubble wrap and pads. They worked hard throughout the day. This was not an easy move has we had been in our home 18+years and have a lot of large heavy furniture. We will be using them again for our next move. Highly recommend!

Jaimie did a great job on our gate repair. I had Jaimie add a trellis to one of my gates and he completely rebuilt my other gate and worked with us so that it can still open enough to fit a vehicle through it. He chose easy-to-open latches. I am very happy with the work and thought that the price was very fair. I highly recommend!

Angel and his brother did an excellent job. We hired them for a lighting and dry wall repair project, and were in a bit of a time crunch. Angel came out the very next day to complete the work. We were very pleased with the quality of their work, and not to mention their professionalism and flexibility. Super nice guys! We definitely recommend them.

Manny arrived early - very courteous - very knowledgeable- completed the repair of my electrical connection to my hot water heater quickly & in a very professional manner. Stayed to make sure I gad hot water - spoke with my plumber to trouble shoot any additional problems that may have popped up. His quote for services rendered were very reasonable - compared to several other electricians I had contacted. His flexibility to come on weekends is a big convenience for all. I would highly recommend Manny to anyone as electrician of choice.

We hired Paula to do a full "move out" cleaning just prior to selling. She did a fantastic job! She was available with only two days notice, she took great care of our home while we were at work, and really paid attention to details with her work. Our fridge, stove, blinds, basically floor to ceiling the house sparkled! We will be hiring Paula again in the future -- I highly recommend her!

Mr. Sawyer was referred to me by a neighbor who had used him previously to do some work at her house. I noticed how nice their house looked after he was done and decided to hire him to power wash and fix up my porch deck. He arrived on time and was polite and professional. He carefully listened to what I wanted done and we decided together that he would replace some damaged boards on the deck and restore and restain the rest. He went right to work powerwashing that day and came back the next day to do the deck. Everything looked great when he was done. The house was bright and clean and the deck looked brand new! I really was pleasantly surprised and believe he charged me a fair price for all the work that he did. I definitely will be calling him back to powerwash again and any other home improvement jobs I might have.

We hired Rob to repair the deck on our rental property. We needed the flooring and railing completely replaced. Rob's work was just beautiful--including routed edges, diagonal seamless board flooring and stylish railings. The work looks very professional. The job was completed in just a couple of days. We couldn't be happier. We will definitely hire Rob for future work and highly recommend him.

Cid responded quickly, did exactly what I needed at a fair price. He provided service beyond welding and he used creativity to repair my problem gate. He also identified other repair jobs in my home and in a few moments had repaired other things too. He was handy, helpful and pleasant. I plan on hiring him again for another repair job (Drywall repair) and have confidence he will do it well.

Adam provided exactly the services we required at a reasonable price. He came out initially to assess the work, explained the issue and gave us an all-inclusive quote for the work, which he kept to. He ordered the parts and contacted us when they came in to arrange a date/time to install. He showed up on time and completed the work, replacing 12 window sash balance assemblies. He left the work areas clean. We highly recommend Adam for window repair work.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.
