Our landscaping project went much smoother and quicker than we ever thought it could! He came out to take a look at what we wanted to do and was able to start immediately. He removed all of our old plantings, did general weeding/clean up, and put down new soil in a few hours.. which would've taken us several days to do! I also appreciated that he reached out to me later in the day to reconfirm that we were happy with everything. Definitely recommend for fast, clean service at a fair price.

James and his crew from Raptor Valley Landscape for a big cleanup and maintenance job at my house recently. The job took several hours and I was extremely pleased with the results! James made sure that I was kept informed of what they were doing and asked for my input when necessary. At the end of the day, James made sure that I was satisfied and offered to come back out if I found anything that I wasn't happy with. I would highly recommend James and his crew and plan to continue to use them for my landscaping needs!

Rob Early and his guys did an excellent job installing our privacy fence and extending an existing fence on our property. He listened to our needs (keeping our persistent dogs in the fence!) and frequently asked for our input during the project. Rob was timely and finished the project before we even needed it completed. I recommend him to anyone looking for a contractor in the triangle area!

I hired Tapp'so to do some simple 10 yardsteps of mulch work and they also set and cut our garden timbers into the ground for us. They offered to repair and replace our 6' garden fence using wire and stakes and did a good job. Reasonably priced too. They are clean, experienced and detailed. I recommend them and will hire them back to finish our other landscaping projects too. Tray is very good at communicating.

Jason and his team did a great job transforming our dream yard into a reality. We completely gutted the front and back and started over from scratch. Within one week of giving us a very economical quote, the work started. 2 weeks later, it looks like we just bought a new house, all over again. Jason has great ideas and helped guide us on what should and should not have been done. This is a great company to go with and trust me, you will not be disappointed. Top notch work for a fair price! Thanks so much for transforming our yard and giving us some great outdoor entertaining areas! We'll always go back to you guys for future landscaping needs!

Our landscape committee believes the owner of this company understood our needs best. He came on site and created a design that we thought would work well. The work is planned for this Thursday, weather permitting.

Having used Lawn Guy Landscaping services for the first time, I found the experience with Michael of Lawn Guy Landscaping truly refreshing because of the overall quality of the results. During the fairly recent past, I've used a few lawn services with results ranging from very satisfactory to disappointing. I found Michael's care in performing the work during his initial visit was faultless. The experience with regard to communication (e.g., being informed re arrival time, how work would be done and the equipment used as well as what work was to be done within a given period of time), was much better than other services I've used and I consider that the price for the quality services I received was a fair one.

Danny Smith and his landscaping crew have done a wonderful job with removing our leaves and putting down winter mulch. They come to our home on 2 separate occasions and had us inspect their work before leaving. You can tell that Danny likes the business that he is in. They have competitive prices and do great work.

FortSmith Lawn & Landscape did an excellent job at a property my husband and I were leasing. Upon the end of our lease, and as part of our move-out duties, the lawn needed: a mow, trim, weed-eat, edging, leaves removal (a lot!), trimmed shrubs and an all-around clean-up look. My husband and I were very pleased with the professional results and hope to hire FortSmith Lawn & Landscape for future services. Thank you FortSmith Landscaping!

Very happy with Carolina Garden company. They came out and assessed our needs within a couple of days and were very responsive to our design questions/ideas. Once we decided on a plan, they were out within days and their team did an amazing job. Brad and Shelley were super nice and even gave us watering instructions after the job was done. Will hire again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
