Introduction: Ellen Brotzman, the owner and founder of The Top Drawer, is a former designer at a high-end cabinet showroom in Columbia, MO. From her years of experience there, Ellen learned that the overhead costs in an upscale showroom necessitate substantial mark-ups, often making the cabinetry unaffordable. Also, the rigid hours, and client overload make it difficult for a designer to offer the prompt, outstanding service, and attention to detail that customers deserve. She knew there had to be a better way to do business. So, she started a cottage industry, selling cabinetry from her home in Missouri. With virtually no overhead expenses, she was able to offer personalized service, flexible hours, and great prices. Ellen experienced remarkable success with this new approach to selling cabinetry, and wanted to transplant this idea when she relocated to Cary, NC in 2005. But as a newcomer to Cary, Ellen knew she could no longer operate her business from home. So, she decided to open a decorative hardware store called The Top Drawer. She knew that folks looking for knobs and pulls might also be looking to buy cabinets; hence, a small, quaint hardware gallery could be a means of spreading the word about her cabinet business. Even though cabinets are Ellen's business, The Top Drawer is not a cabinet showroom, but rather a small, gallery-like space, displaying a fantastic collection of cabinet hardware. The reason Ellen chose not to employ a large cabinet showroom is because the overhead expenses incurred in doing so would drive up cabinet prices. Instead, she uses the revenues generated from the sale of knobs and pulls to pay for overhead expenses, which has allowed her to continue offering offer her customers the same highly personalized design services and quality cabinetry at more affordable prices than those found in fancy cabinet showrooms. A huge asset to The Top Drawer is Ellen herself. Not only is she an exquisite cabinet designer (see the testimonials on her website), she is also experienced at life: Married 28 years, mother of four, homemaker, and creative renovator of many fixer-upper homes. Ellen continually delights her customers with her insight into what makes a kitchen beautiful, functional and affordable. She is passionate about her work, and truly cares about the thousand tiny details that work together to make even the tiniest kitchen be the best it can be. Ellen herself oversees every aspect of each job herself: From the design to the measuring and ordering of every last piece of cabinetry to overseeing the installation. So, you will have her complete attention, and never have your project passed off to anyone, ever. You won't find this kind of service in any large cabinet showroom. At first, I was very hesitant to work with a kitchen designer - I think I was afraid to hand over the keys to someone else. Ellen Brotzman was a lifesaver. When I first contacted her, I got so nervous it was over a year before I contacted her again, but she was always the consummate professional. She worked with me with the floorplan constraints I have and came up with a really novel and effective use of my space. We went back and forth on the design, and since I am a busy professional in Raleigh and she is in Cary, we were able to effectively work out the details with emailing back and forth. I bought custom cherry cabinetry from Ellen, so there was no additional design services fee. She was willing to work with any contractor, but I ended up taking one of her referrals and I could not have been more pleased. Ellen even checked on the progress during an extended vacation I took during the construction - and she caught a construction problem early so we were able to resolve it over the phone instead of coming home to a disappointmnent The result - a truly "wow" kitchen. Somehow within the confines of my less-than-spacious first floor footprint, I now have a bigger house. My kitchenaid mixer now pops out of its own cabinet. I have a very deep cabinet alongside the fridge that holds a ton. I have a "baking area" and a "serving area", even a "drinks area"! Almost a year later (yes, I am bad about getting to writing up reviews), I am still awed by how beautiful and functional my kitchen is. I have had people actually tell me this is the most beautiful kitchen cabinetry they have seen before! I would heartily recommend Ellen Brotzman and her kitchen redesign services. I felt she led me toward good choices, but she also kept "my style" in mind and helped me select not only cabinets but also tiles, a sink, etc. that worked together. She got as excited as I did when we found "just the right sink" on a bargain sale! My fears of having someone else "take over" the project were unfounded - Ellen applied her talents and made an effective partner with me in designing a kitchen I would love, and I am thrilled with the result! I am told also that her services and the cabinets were at a bargain price compared to the same quality elsewhere!

Ellen designed our kitchen and master bath remodels and provided the cabinets and pulls. We've had a couple of other design attempts but nothing that satisfied us. Ellen was the first to come up with what we thought was the perfect scheme. She did not disappear through the process, rather stayed with us the whole way through. We couldn't be happier with her work and her product.

Ellen Brotzman of The Top Drawer is a very talented kitchen designer. My husband and I worked with Ellen in 2009 to totally redesign the kitchen in our then 14 year old home. The transformation has been very dramatic; changing the footprint completely. We love our kitchen and couldn't be happier with the resulting project. I wholeheartedly recommend Ellen!

FAQs

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Look for someone you feel comfortable working with who will listen to you and give you highly personalized service. You will not find this in big box stores, and also you won't find it in a lot of cabinet showrooms. Designers in those places are handling too many jobs at one time and won't give you the attention you need. Look for smaller operations like The Top Drawer.
