Board and train at a facility
I miss john! I took a break from training with my 4 crazy dogs and feel like it's probably too late to go back, but it was fantastic! I would love to pick it back up. John is great at what he does, and he seems to invest himself into his employees.Apr 27, 2019Verified
We rescued our german shepherd Ritter when he was about 1 year old. He had come from an abusive past and was a bit of a mess. We engaged John shortly after we got Ritter and John helped us turn Ritter into the confident and well trained dog he is today. John is great reading dogs and knowing what it takes to reach their potential and knows what is too much. He trains interactively and it helped us so much but more importantly, it helped Ritter immensely. I cannot say enough good things about John. Many people compliment us on how well trained Ritter is and we always highly recommend John.Nov 1, 2018Verified
John is not only a trainer, but a valuable resource- makes himself available to do what it takes. We acquired our 3 yo GS from a kennel so he needed to be household/ young family trained- jumping up, command/response, dog aggression. John communicated our dog’s progress throughout his training and provided the training our dog needed. John also provides the opportunity for follow up and refresh to reinforce the initial training. This is key for my household as all our humans need to be in the same page, using the same vocabulary, as our GS was trained. Very pleased!Aug 1, 2018Verified
My dog is making progress, slowly but surely. It really is up to the owner to do the homework and train the dog outside of training sessions. I work long days so some days I do not train, and I can tell that when I do he is a lot better than when I don't. Mariah has been fantastic so far & Bayley loves her! For new folks starting out, ask your trainer if it's okay to record little snippets of the first few sessions so that when you're training during the week if you forget hand signals or verbal commands, you have the video on your phone to look back at. That really helped me through my first few weeks of training!Dec 11, 2017Verified
John trained me how to properly and effectively train my dogs (both young, seni-rambunctious mid-large sized with a pretty high prey drive) so that they better listen to my commands and I have more confidence taking them out and about. I love having the e-collars (which I use for corrections at a pretty low setting) and the choice to move to them to it was ultimately my decision. I am happy with the results of the training as well as the fact that if they ever have issues with learned commands that John will add us back into his schedule as needed for the life of the dogs.Feb 15, 2018VerifiedHolland K9 Services's reply
I love this so much! Cathy, your dogs were such a pleasure and you are a great handler!
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)? Many trainers charge per session or for a package of training sessions. The problem with this model is that clients never know how much they will actually pay for training to meet their goals. This is a flawed strategy because there is no motivation for the trainer to actually meet the client's goals. Instead, it is in the trainers best interest to not meet the client's goals and as a result keep charging for more sessions. A better model is to charge based on meeting the client's goals for a flat fee regardless of how long it takes. That is why at Holland K9 Services we charge using this model. We will meet with the client, get a better understanding of their goals and write a contract with measurable goals clearly outlined. We will charge a flat fee based on those goals. Our pricing starts at $750.00 for advanced off leash obedience and unlimited sessions. For aggression and severe behavioral issues our pricing is $1,500.00 this fee also includes unlimited session and free follow-ups.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer? When we are contacted by a client we will begin with a phone consultation. During that consultation we get a general idea of what the client is trying to accomplish with their pet and answer any questions that the client may have. We make a valid effort to make sure that we are a good fit with the client. It is critical to set expectations during this initial contact about general pricing and what realistic goals can be accomplished through training. If the client wants to proceed with training we will either setup an in-person consultation to meet the dog and owner or create a contract and send it to the client. It isn't always necessary to meet with a client before starting training. For instance, if a client wants to begin training with a puppy that has typical behaviors, we can email a contract and schedule the training with the client. With more severe issues such as aggression or separation anxiety, we typically schedule an in-person consultation to make sure we feel confident that the behavior can be addressed through training. There is no universal method of training that will work with every dog in every situation. That is why at Holland K9 Services we build a comprehensive and tailored program for each of our dogs. This is a different approach than most training companies that only have one training program and if it doesn’t work with a particular dog than there is nothing they can do. All of our training is rooted in established animal behavior science. Not a gut feeling or some other non-qualified strategy. While a cookie cuter approach may work some of the time with some of the dogs , it will never build a dog that is consistent in every situation, every time regardless of the distraction.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?I am a certified service dog trainer. I also have over 15 years experience working with a wide variety of breeds in competition level obedience, service dog training, and behavior modification. Before being a dog trainer, I was a corporate training manager with years of experience designing curriculums and delivering educational materials to adult learners. This experience has proven to be very beneficial when working with my clients.
