I do small engine repair for less. It's a simple concept: low cost, low overhead and fast service.

I like to be upfront with my pricing. I work very hard to keep my overhead low and my service fast. I can do most repairs for under push and self-propelled mowers for under 50.00.

I provide free diagnostics. I don't think it fair to ask customers to pay me for trying to figure out what I should already know.

I charge 10.00 for pick up and delivery. If I could do it for free, I would.

Repair rates are as follows:

- 25.00 for the first half hour
- 45.00 per hour shop rate
- Tune ups for push and self-propelled mowers: 60.00

This includes air filter and oil change, new spark plug, hand-filed blade sharping, clean carb, set RPMs, adjust self propel, lube trans and wheels and tighten loose hardware, and inspect for any other issues.

- Tune and service for riding lawn mowers: 120.00

This includes air filter and oil change, lube, new spark plug(s), sharping, clean carb, set RPMs, check linkage and spindles and wheels and tighten loose hardware, and inspect for any other issues.

- Engine swaps for push mowers: 50.00 to 60.00

If you have a good motor but your deck is a mess, or if your motor went south and left the rest of your mower behind, I can help. For push mowers, it's 50.00, including the new engine; for self propelled, it's 60.00.

I am only limited by the number of used motors and decks available (another great reason to bring in your old mower for trade).

- Tune ups for string trimmers: 30.00

Mig Welding
My rates for welding are the same as repairs and just like my repairs, either at my place or yours (as long as you have a 110volt outlet available) Iron, steell, and stainless steel only. For patch repairs on push mowers already in for service there will only a nominal charge (1.00-10.00)

This includes air filter or filter cleaning, carb cleaning and adjustment, new spark plug, main line bearing lube and spark arrestor cleaning.

I also work on pressure washers, tillers, and blowers, but I don't do chainsaws. Ok, maybe I'll do chainsaws, but I won't like it.

I will be offering a one-year guarantee on selected reconditioned lawn mowers. If you have any mechanical problem within the first year of ownership (barring neglect), bring the mower back to me and I will fix or replace it for free. The guarantee will be available on all Briggs and Stratton classic-style engines, along with selected Quantum engines. The cost of the guarantee is 15.00.

    Received an email that he would pick up my mower on Monday and return it on Saturday. He never called after that even though I called him twice and emailed him.
    After reading some reviews, Bruce has a habit of not responding to customers so I guess he did me a favor by not picking up my mower since other customers have trouble getting it fixed correctly or getting it back in a timely manner.

    My lawn mower stopped working mid-mow. Since it was the summer I thought I would be forever for a service company to fix my mower. Found the perfect answer - Bruce the lawn mower guy! Brought my mower to him after work one day, gave me a quick, honest, free quote. Then the best part - told me it would be done next week! Even better - he delivered the fixed mower within the week at less money than I even expected. The test - week and a half of heavily fertilized Bermuda. Took two passes just because of the length but the mower was back to normal.

    Bruce picked up my John Deere mower and then dropped it off once it was repaired. He was always here exactly when he said he would be and he was very knowledgable about small engine repair. He was able to diagnose the problem at my house, but needed to take it to his shop so he had access to all the necessary tools. I highly recommend Bruce for mower repairs!

    Good guy. Came to our house on a Sunday. Fixed our riding mower that wouldn't start. Very reasonable pricing. Would (and have already) recommend Bruce.

    Found out there was a major delay on how long it took for the text messages to go between us. I would get one and it would say he had sent it three hours ago. Strange. Might explain why some people were having communication issues.

    I submitted a request for a quote and Bruce was the only one to write back. He did so while on vacation. Told me when he would be in town and said if I could wait, then he would schedule a pick up.
    Bruce followed up and picked it up without any hassle (there when he saidnhe would be).
    His pricing is straight forward and exact. He returned the mower within a week all fixed up. Interesting, most shops around town ask you to drop off and have a 3 week lead time to repair. Bruce was great and so is Thumbtack, everything was so convenient and exact.

    Nice guy, but as Leo Durocher said, "Nice guys finish last." Never returned phone calls. When I finally did get in touch with him (after persistent calls), he told me that it might not be worth repairing, but of course I hadn't been told anything for a few weeks. THANKFULLY, I did not need the chainsaw for anything pressing. I'm pretty patient but this is unacceptable. Sorry to write a negative review but ultimately I had to go back and just pick up the chainsaw. It's been a month since I dropped it off. The overall 5 star reviews are definitely deceptive, at least in my case. I'll be looking elsewhere - a company that will actually communicate with me. And hopefully fix the problem.

    Bruce is a great guy and does excellent, reasonably-priced work. Although there are some negative reviews on here and I can understand that things do not always go as well as we would like, I find it hard to believe that given the opportunity to make good on a repair that Bruce would not have followed through. He came by and picked up our John Deere tractor, did the repair, replaced several parts with high quality aftermarket substitutes (do you really think John Deere is making all their own parts?), and got the mower to run like new. While he was picking up the tractor, he did a quick repair on our self-propelled mower so we would have something to use in the meantime. As he is a distributor for Sten parts and works out of his home, his prices are far below the competition with equal to or better quality. Highly recommended!

    My lawnmower would just not crank up and stay on. Bruce came and picked it up and not even three days later he called and said it was good to go. He dropped it off and I was good to go. It was much more reasonable in price than I think a shop would have charged. I will be calling Bruce again for any other small engine jobs.

    I contaced Bruce about repairing our riding mower. We scheduled a time for him to come out on a Saturday. After repeated phone calls he finally sent me an email at 6:30pm letting me know that a previous call had run long and that he would be out the next afternoon. The next NIGHT after repeated calls and emails once again I finally sent him another email letting him know that I was not interested in his services. I was a little mad that he missed the appointment on Saturday but tried to be understanding. The fact that he missed the appointment on Sunday and never even called or emailed made me absolutely FURIOUS. There is no way I would let this person leave my house with anything I owned. I would rather cut the grass with scissors than depend on his services. I care for my grandparents as well as my disabled mother and need the time on the weekends to take care of errands and other things that I cannot do during the week. The fact that I wasted two days waiting for someone who didn't even have the courtesy to call is unforgivable. I wish there was a way to give a star minus.

    I am so glad I found Bruce. I requested service and he promptly replied. He picked up my lawn mower the next day. There was so much "mud" in the mower that he spent the time cleaning it out and making sure that it would run properly.     Do not call this guy!!! He comes out to fix my rider gets it running, so I have him take my push mower with him to fix as well. After he leaves I go to cut my yard and I get about three strips cut and it dies and will not start up again. So I call him and leave a message and hear nothing back from him. I left him another message and finally get a text message from him 4 days later. He came back out the next week and brought my push mower that he said he fixed and repaired my rider again as well. Paid him for fixing both the mowers. So once again I go to cut my grass with my rider I get to the bottom of the driveway and it dies and will not start. I go to use the the push mower to cut the grass and it wont even start. I have called and left him several messages and have not received a call back and its been 2 weeks. Not only am I out the money I paid this guy to fix my mowers I also had to pay someone for 2 weeks to cut my grass. Absolutely horrible customer service he should not even be allowed to advertise on Thumbtack. I own my own business and would never treat any of my customers this way!!!! Not to mention he kept saying how easy these engines are to work on, well if there so easy why are both my mowers still broke?

    I should have reviewed Bruce, before this, since he worked on my mower in March 2012. We were both having a lot of "challenges" thrown at us by Life, but he was professional and did his very best in spite of multiple obstacles. My mower hasn't skipped a beat since and it hasn't cut the grass this well since it was new. I would, and have, recommended him without hesitation. I won't hesitate to call him again and plan on using him for all mower maintenance.

    Great service from Bruce! I had a trimmer that was giving trouble and he was able to quickly diagnose the issues and give me options for repair. His rates are great and he kept me updated of the repair status during his time with the equipment.

    I shopped around pricing various 'repair shops' who tried to upsale me on replacing my trimmer or just charge extreme rates for the repair altogehter. It was nice to actually find an honest and down to earth person to service my equipment instead. I highly recommend Bruce and will definitely come back for my future mower and trimmer needs.     Mr. Jones delivers solidly in every respect.

    1. Expertise. He's knowledgeable about his craft. He identified the problems with my mower, corrected them, and performed the additional routine maintenance I requested. Yesterday, I operated my mower for the first time after Mr. Jones repaired it, and, yes, it's a cliche to state that "it runs like it was new"---but the fact is, it did.

    2. TImeliness. The time from when Mr. Jones picked up my machine until the time he returned it to me was five days. I defy any franchised mower-repair business to routinely have a faster turn-around time than that.

    3. Cost. The repair charges, plus the fee for picking up and delivery, were incredibly economical.

    4. Professional ethic. Impeccable. My wife gave me a chuckle after Mr. Jones came to my house in his personal vehicle, picked up my lawn mower, and departed. She said, "You realise that you just gave our lawn mower to a man you never met before, who then put it in his own car and drove away with it." The fact of the matter was that was never a concern. Mr. Jones kept me informed constantly throughout his work, advising me of when he would arrive, what he found wrong with the machine, what he did to fix it, what the charges would be, and when he would bring it back---and completely delivered in everything he said. He is professional and trustworthy.

    5. Personable. Now, if a service provider is top-notch in the first four areas above, then how nice a guy he is really doesn't matter. But Mr. Jones is also pleasant and cordial. I'm not a fellow who readily takes to people, but it was, personally, a pleasure to meet him.

    To anyone who needs repair of his lawn mower, or anything else that falls under Mr. Jones's repair skills, I recommend him most strongly.

    Very disappointed as he took our check but did not fix the lawnmowers. Bruce picked up two of our lawnmowers, worked on them (presumably), dropped them back off, and cashed our check. We tried mowing the lawn but the two lawnmowers were still broken. We left two kind messages for him, asked for a return call. We did not even ask for our money back, just asked if he could call back so we can figure out what is wrong with the lawnmowers. He did not call back. He did cash the 115 dollar check we mistakingly gave him. So much for trusting a professional.

Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.

A. The most common repair I do is carburator rebuilds and cleaning. For some reason, the larger repair shops seem to have a habit of telling folks that they need a carb when they really need just to have it cleaned or serviced.

A new carburator runs about 75.00 to 95.00. A carb rebuild runs about 30.00 to 45.00

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Even if you think your lawn mower is junk, call me before you push it out to the curb. Very often, it can be fixed cheaper and faster than you would imagine.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Like many service trades, over the last decade or so small engine repair has become rife with people who would probably be better served if they worked at Burger King. My advice to any customer is even if you don't come to me, find a family owned and run shop. If the owner comes out and has grease under his fingernails, your in the right place.

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. As with any mechanical repair, if your not sure what the problem is, just describe the symptoms and let me diagnose the problem.
I have had customers in the past who have called me to have full tune ups done but really needed something else entirely.

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. I try not to talk down to my customers and I try to keep the attitude that most of what I do any of my customers could do if they they had the time and patience.

A good comparison would be hiring someone to cut your grass. Sometimes, it's easier, faster, and neater, to let someone else do the work.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. Talking to customers.

I am by all accounts a goofball who likes telling stories.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. How can you afford to work so cheap.

The answer is simple...I work fast.

Most shops cater to commercial accounts with large expensive equipment. Last time I checked, there was a bunch more homeowners with push mowers than there are landscaping companies.

Q. Do you have a favorite story from your work?

A. I sold a litle Craftsman push mower to a guy up in Mooresville that works for a Nascar team and builds and races his own cars. A couple weeks after I sold it to him he called me very irrate saying that the lawnmower was spewing oil and smoking.
I asked him what happened and he said, "I don't know I just added a quart of oil and started smoking and running like @#$%."

Most lawn mower engines only take about a pint of oil.

When its over filled, it backs up through the oil breather and into the carb making a smokey oily mess.

Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?

A. It ain't rocket science. I use a very simple process in all the repairs that I do.
All engines work the same way; intake, compression, ingnition, exhaust. If any of those things don't happen, the motor doesn't run.

Q. How did you decide to get in your line of work?

A. I learned to work on lawnmowers as a young boy. Honestly, five years ago if you told me I'd be doing this again, i would have laugh my tail off.
But, a couple years ago my job in the finance industry went away (forever) and I had to figure out a way to make money. Once I got back into it, I found that there is an incredible demand for small engine service and repair.
