Nobody likes changing their tax preparer, but Adam did an excellent job all around of making the process as easy as possible. The reason I selected Short Financial was the "Get it done" attitude. He is knowledgeable, and my questions/issues are are addressed immediately. That's so important for a small business like mine. The online tax info system was very user friendly, and saved me a ton of time. Next step... we start working on tax planning to make my business more efficient. When you select the companies to interview for your business... BE SURE TO PUT SHORT FINANCIAL IN THE GROUP FOR CONSIDERATION. Thanks! David W Milkins Milkins Consulting, Charlotte NC

Abacus Accounting Pros, Spiro Galanis, has not only handled my personal and business taxes in a professional manner, they did so with a compassionate touch. My previous accountant of 35 years died suddenly one week before the 15th of April. Spiro stopped everything he was doing to help me. Abacus Accounting has continued to provide me with professional and personal accounting services and I would highly recommend their services.

I would definitely recommend Edin to help with any of your tax needs. He is knowledgeable, flexible, and reasonable priced. This was the first year of my small business tax filing. Edin was able to walk me through the process step by step, as well as find ways to save $$ for next year tax filing.

I have been going to Godwin for my taxes for years. He not only specializes in local and federal taxes, but also is an expert in advising expatriates living overseas on their tax liabilities. Godwin's professionalism and quick turnaround are the very reasons I am a loyal client of Allied Tax & Accounting Consultants.

Brooke is phenomenal at what she does. She's been such a great help as we transitioned from doing taxes as single people, to a married couple, to parents, and now as business owners. Each stage requires different tax information and it's a great thing to trust your accountant. It's even better to work with someone who answers all of your questions and teaches you so much about the financial state you're in versus working with someone who doesn't communicate with you, does your taxes impersonally. I would recommend Blaine La/Car Associates to anyone! ( And I do every chance I get) - Imani Coles

I started a rental property business back in 2011 and hadn’t filed tax returns on my income since starting out. An IRS agent gave me a visit in June 2017 and served a one-month notice to pay back taxes totaling more than $30,000. I was completely horrified and called a bunch of tax consultancies. I got a reply from Legacy and they offered to go over the records of my business. I hadn’t really maintained any accounts, but did have the bank statements detailing the receipt of rent and expenses. They helped prepare a record of accounts for me and filed it with the IRS. The firm negotiated with the IRS and managed to get the taxes reduced to half of the tax estimate and put me on a monthly payment plan. I will be finished with the payments next month. I also used their firm to file taxes for this year. They are a good, reliable service and I am quite relieved to be done with my back taxes.

We hired James to handle our small event companies tax return. We do not have any accounting software so it was great to work with him on setting up the necessary software and handling all of our bookkeeping with Quickbooks. He also set up our LLC including the necessary paperwork to ensure that we were properly filed with the state. He prepared our financial statement for our returns and has anticipated us saving a couple thousand! It has been great working with James as he is quick, efficient, and personable and we will definitely use him to file our taxes as well. I am also now personally using him to file my taxes.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire an accountant?

Accountants’ rates vary based on their education, licenses, experience, and the work for which they are being hired. An accountant may charge an hourly rate when a company or individual needs their services on a short-term basis, such as when performing an audit or requesting assistance setting up a financial database or process. Hourly rates can range as widely as $40 per hour to $300 or more per hour, depending on your geographic location and the accountant. Check out the average hourly rate for accounting services in your region.

Accountants may offer a package rate for weekly, monthly or annual services to reward ongoing customers. Many accountants offer online services where small businesses can access online accounting software and payroll assistance, and the accountant — for a monthly or other recurring fee — provides financial analysis and reporting of their numbers. For basic monthly accounting services, an accountant might charge anywhere from $75 to $500 or more, depending on what was included in a given package, the size of the client’s business, and the complexity of work requested. Nationally, full-time staff accountants earn between $40,000 and $80,000, depending on experience and other factors.

    What is an accountant?

Accountants are financial professionals who have received an accounting degree from a four-year university or college. By trade, accountants prepare, maintain and examine the financial statements of an individual, business or institution. An accountant prepares reports for tax purposes and can also perform audits of public companies. Common tasks include creating budgets, analyzing profits and losses of a company, processing payroll, preparing financial statements for company leadership, and creating and maintaining financial database systems for a company.

Accountants do not automatically have a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation unless they have passed the Uniform CPA Examination and received the proper license. Regardless of whether they are CPA certified or not, accountants can assist businesses and individuals with bookkeeping and financial reporting, while CPAs are more knowledgeable in tax codes as a result of the CPA licensing examination and continuing education requirements. CPAs are also eligible to represent clients before the IRS if audit support is required, while a non-CPA accountant is not. Academic background, years in the field and professional reputation all can affect an accountant’s rates.
