We had some water damage recently. We were very pleased with the job Lee and Brian did at our home. They repaired a hole in the ceiling that was damaged from water, repainted the ceiling and installed new tile in a bathroom. They also installed new tile in a small area in our basement. They were polite, friendly, and cleaned up after themselves. The quote Jon gave us was very reasonable. We will be using their services again, for sure!

This is the 2nd time I have hired Nick, and happy I did so. He did a great job laying new floors in 2 of my bathroom's. He repaired damage I had done from a flood caused by my master bathroom upstairs. He went above and beyond to make sure I was happy with all his work. He did some painting repair, popcorn ceiling repair, installed 2 brand new toilets, installed a new fan, and fixed damage in my garage. I highly recommend Nick Gillaspie. I will be using his services in the future. He makes home ownership for single person easy and is very affordable compared to many other quotes I have received. Thank you.

I had the entire interior of my 2100+ sq ft, 11 room house painted: ceilings, trim, doors, walls, closets. Included a cathedral ceiling, popcorn ceilings in some rooms, not in others and 2 rooms with plaster ceilings. Ben not only gave me a great price, but started right away, and Carlos and his team did an outstanding job and finished in less than a week! Ben also followed up with me and kept in contact during the process, and in scheduling everything. Thank you both so much, and your team!

I recently purchased a new home, and the movers scratched and dented some of my newly painted walls, so I needed some touch up painting done. I went on Thumbtack and Jonathan was one of the first to respond to my request. He called me immediately and was very courteous and professional. Although he sent me a quote via the site, I requested a written one to provide to the movers, and Jonathan obliged my request with no problem. On the day of our scheduled appointment, he showed up on time, and did an excellent job with the touch up painting! I love that Jonathan is flexible as well - in addition to needing walls touched up, there was also a spot on the ceiling that needed a touch up, but I did not have the paint on that day - Jonathan agreed to come back and touch up the ceiling when I had the paint! I highly recommend Salazar Express! I will definitely be using them for future services!

Cy installed wiring for under-cabinet lights in our house. He was easy to coordinate with and the wiring and lights look great! Because I wanted them all connected to one, new switch, he had to run wiring through the upper cabinets and soffit. He installed the wires in a way that aren't very noticeable. Overall I would definitely use him again!

Bruce was friendly, courteous, very thorough, and did a great job. He worked in my house for 2 1/2 days, with no one home, running wire in the ceiling to install ceiling fans in the room ceiling centers, in rooms where there were no ceiling light fixtures. He repaired the Sheetrock where he had to cut into the ceiling in such good fashion that at this point I don't even need to paint. It was a pleasure doing business with someone so competent and trustworthy. I'd recommend him to anyone.

We hired Dan as our GC for our home renovation. So far, it's been great working with him and his crew. Dan is quite knowledgeable and informative. He's been awesome at keeping us right on budget. He's also in touch with us. He lets us know what's going on, and always answers our calls or gets back to us in the evening. They have put in awesome flooring, baseboards, and painted ( and removed our popcorn from ceiling). We still have a few things were working on, but we are totally happy with the progress. Dan is our go guy!

Issac is very skilled, very creative, problem solving and efficient, he fixed issue with exterior door and installed storm door. Issac was professional, on time, excellent work and would highly recommend. I've rehired Issac to replace windows, replace five faucets, lighting, ceiling fans and painting. Such a pleasure, can't say enough as to how pleased I was with the service.

They came the next day and were able to determine it was not my roof that was the issue. It was a problem with a duct in the ceiling. They were able to repair it the same day. I will be hiring them for future jobs.

I was very impressed ;with Ricky over the phone. He told me he was very busy at this time but he would work me into his schedule, and he did just that. He made a trip to my house at a time when others would not, and was able to diagnose the problem and resolve my issues in a timely manner. He gave me what I consider to be a great price on the work he preformed and I intend to hire him to add another outlet in my master bath and repair a ceiling fan in our spare bedroom and well as some other issues in our old house. He is a good guy and well worth a try

Scott repaired a large hole in our bathroom ceiling caused by a plumbing leak. He was fast snd professional and his pricing was great! Once the job was done it looked like nothing had ever happened. No visable seams from the repair at all. Thats saying a lot because thats hard to do on a non textured ceiling.

Dan is very knowledgable and qualified to do almost every home repair, quick to access the situation, offered various solution levels, and ultimately did a fantastic job of skim coating all my ceilings after the pop-corn was removed. He was instrumental in modernizing my out-dated home. If you want the job done right, please do not hesitate to hire Dan!!!

I have had Dean do a number of projects at my house. He is clean cut, reasonably priced, and very skilled in construction (and auto repair). Even as a single woman I felt very safe around Dean. Now that I'm married my husband and I still use him. For everything. He was referred to me by a friend who uses him and has become our go to guy and I am happy to list some of the projects he has done for us: Installed light fixtures, fixed leaky shower faucets, fixed our garbage disposal, replaced sink hardware, installed a ceiling fan, installed our microwave, installed our dishwasher, installed a toilet, fixed a toilet that wouldn't stop running, installed a mailbox, installed tile in my kitchen, and I'm sure I am forgetting things. Sometimes we even pay him to help my husband with projects he can't do alone. He is actually a really good teacher too. Now my mother in law and several of my friends use him to help with their projects. He really is great!

The project was fixing a hole in the ceiling of the bathtub. Chad showed up on time and was very polite the whole time. The price was reasonable and the work was really detailed, he carefully sanded even the whole surface. All expenses were reported with a receipt. He cleaned after the project and it looked really nice. He also fixed a air vent that was not part of the contract. one tiny tiny thing: a bath towel was stained with paint...but it is an unintentional mistake and does nothing to degrade the service quality

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
