Introduction: I know how daunting learning to play music can be. I tailor each lesson to the needs of the student to foster personal empowerment, deep musical understanding, and a joyful sense of process. I am highly proficient in several different instruments and musical traditions, and I draw on these influences (as well as over 8 years of teaching experience) to provide a holistic and rigorous approach to the lifelong journey of musical engagement. I teach upright bass, electric bass, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, fiddle, banjo, and lap slide. I can also bring you through the fundamentals of piano and drum kit. Stylistically I am deeply rooted in jazz and traditional folk (or 'old time'), though I also have real-world experience in the worlds of funk, gospel, pop/rock, and classical. For musical entertainment, I lead jazz and old time string bands. Anything from solo fingerpicked guitar for a wedding ceremony, to a high energy party band, to cocktail jazz, and everything in between.

I had the distinct pleasure of learning the basics of clawhammer banjo from Michael. From our time together, I can only give the most full-throated endorsement of his skills and talents as both a tutor and as a player of string instruments. Capable of instructing one on the finer techniques of playing the instrument, coupled with his extensive knowledge of musical theory, I have no doubts that Michael can help aspiring players of any skill level to improve their craft.

I miss studying with Michael. He (understandably) moved away to pursue his dreams and so we had to end our professional relationship. He was such an ideal fit for me in terms of his playing style, prowess, and knowledge. And, I'm sure he's only gotten better since our time together. Aside from being a great teacher he was always good company and I consider him a friend. As an artist he embodies everything I love about bass (and music in general). You won't find a better teacher!

Mike DeVito is an incredible musician and teacher! Bass lessons with him are always a great and enriching time. Scheduling is a breeze, he is very responsive and flexible. He is extremely knowledgable and skilled, and works with me at my level to improve my skills. He helps me with exercises to practice on my own, helps me figure out how to play some of my favorite songs, explains music theory in an understandable way, and is always very patient with me the entire time. I highly recommend him to anyone at any skill level!
