Daniel and his partner were the best contractors that I have ever used. This was a big project. I needed some work done to bring in water and sewage out to a building. This was a dedicated project and of them coming. My original contractor royally screwed up my project and left me with lost money and a huge mess. All MIghty Plumbing communicated early and often. Daniel was honest and advised me on any changes or challenges to make this work . The project was a great experience. Daniel is well experienced, honest and timely. 5 STARS ALL THE WAY.

I was told by Lowes and buy the other installer. That I would have to replace one of my doors yet when McHugh construction came out he was able to just re-hang it and I didn’t have to pay to buy a new door plus installation fees very honest.

Steve came behind other contractors who had botched everything they touched. He was willing to fix everything that was wrong no matter how bad it was. He stayed until the project was finished and never left, even after multiple delays and add-ons. Steve is a stand up guy and I would hire him again.

After reading all the positive reviews I felt confident I had found the right person to tackle my home repair needs; and I was not wrong. Jeremy was punctual, knowledgeable, courteous and accomplished. He conferred with me on various options to make repairs in unusual situations, came up with novel suggestions, some of which worked, and some of which didn't, but not until after he had tried (electrical issues created by another contractor). So all in all I was very satisfied with he and his colleague's work ethic, work product and expertise. They cleaned up after themselves and were very well priced, in my opinion. I will definitely hire A Squared again.

Wow. I cannot express how happy I am that I finally decided to go with Matt. Through all of my indecisions and changes he remained completely calm and professional and is truly a super great guy. He and his team went above and beyond what was expected, including extras and details that I would never have thought of. All of his guys are extremely professional and very nice. They show up when they say they will, work hard all day, communicate everything, and were simply a joy to work with. And to top all of this his quotes beat out 4 other contractors. I would recommend Matt to anyone in a second.

Overall, I thought he was a solid worker and while it is hard to gauge if I got the highest quality of work, I feel like the work done was reasonable. They did work within my budget for several small projects, and while they didn't adhere to the original schedule, they did get the pieces done. The general replacement of the mortar around bricks looks ok on the front of the house, and the relaying of the walkway was done well. They built up a first new step (because one was missing or never built. It was done with a concrete and brick dye. He was convinced that will eventually 'blend in' so I am waiting to see that happen in the coming months. The back brick patio replacement bricks was a little less consistent, and people have noticed that the mortar around the bricks is right now a little sloppy - though, again, I am affirmed by the contractor this will improve over time. He did say it might take a while. I had two other small projects that he did take on - one was washing and repairing a second entryway's brickwork and that mortar has already broken away and I believe I will have to redo this in the coming week. The other was a small brick extension to the back brickway that was almost forgotten. The job was supposed to take 1-2 days, and it sprawled out to two weeks for various reasons. I also paid them in installments on a daily basis, which is fine but highly unusual. So that is something to prepare for.

HI! I am writing in support of Ground Up Construction. About 8 months ago my father, who is 94, and a retired carpenter, had an incident with a raccoon. The raccoon ate through the floor of his laundry room looking for a place to stay for the winter. This did an incredible amount of damage. I placed a call for bid on Thumbtack and got an immediate response from Ryan Todd at Ground Up Construction. They came up and took a look at the damage and gave a detailed bid. They were by far the most professional of the company's that spoke to us about the job and gave the most complete materials list and labor expenses. They spoke to my father about what they thought would need to be done and discussed with him what problems they might encounter. As my father put it, "they are going to do what I would do, if I could have done the work." Two weeks later they were on the job. The job was done quickly and finished on budget. These men are all thoroughly competent professionals with plenty of experience. I highly recommend them for any carpentry that you might need. Mike Lopp 336-784-8760

I went with my gut instinct and chose Kimberley and Patrick to re-tile my guest bathroom floor. They were quick to respond and answered all of my questions. The thing that set them apart from the rest was that they eased my concern about leaving subcontractors at my house to help with the job. They assured me that it would just be the two of them, and they held to their word. They estimated how long the job would take, and they worked very hard to make that happen. Highly pleased and definitely have them on my "call list" should I need any other projects completed (which knowing me...I will!). Great job, guys!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
