Daniel was prompt, courteous, responsive, reasonably priced, and went above and beyond to make sure the job was done to our satisfaction. The original request was to replace a hot water heater, but he also did a small bathroom repair at no extra charge. I would highly recommend.

Wiggins Electric did a fantastic job. Responded immediately and came out within the hour in order to restore our power due to the cold temperatures we were experiencing. He did not want us without heat. He troubleshooted until the issue was identified and quickly repaired. All in all a great experience!

I needed a relatively low-cost roof repair that two other roofers rejected (they offered full replacement only). Singleton inspected and repaired the same day I called them, then emailed a bill to me. The total cost was a small fraction of a full roof replacement. The whole experience was simple, easy, and fast. Highly recommended.

I traveled to Greensboro from Fayetteville to have this roof repair done on a specific day. Sergio called me and was prompt on arriving at the address and after checking the roof, left to get the materials he needed, returned promptly and completed the job. While I called Antonio Remodeling/Renovations for a specific area of repair, Sergio checked the entire roof for me and completed all the areas that needed attention in a couple of hours in one afternoon.

Sal is a true professional. He walked me through every step of the repair, asked appropriate questions to help him determine the root problem and determine the solution. Sal had to replace the main breaker in my circuit panel. He gave me a fantastic price on the part itself ( he comparison shopped) and completed the repair in a timely fashion. Sal checked to make sure the issue did not re-appear before declaring the job complete. And, I got a two-fer to boot... he noticed that I had an issue with my garbage disposal and promptly crawled under the kitchen sink, waved his magic wand and viola'...problem solved! Sal is the best and I would recommend that if you have an electrical problem or need then you should contact Sal, I know I will. I am going to recommend him to all my friends and co-workers. Sal took the stress out of a stressful situation.

Charles was awesome! Super-personable and when the toilet repair I hired him for took only a few minutes to complete, he was happy to also look at my refrigerator and determine that it needs a new fan, which he’ll return to replace, and hang drapery rods that I’ve been procrastinating on. 100% happy with his work and I highly recommend Charles. I hired him because of his stellar reviews and I hope my review prompts others to do the same. A+++

We needed major repairs to our 90 year old porch which was literally crumbling beneath our feet. James did an incredible job restoring our porch while maintaining the unique character of our old home. He also had to contend with mother nature and periods of rain that came and went for days on end. He made several trips to our home just to check on things and ensure that the rain was not causing any damage to the progress. In spite of the weather and the job being bigger than anticipated, he finished quickly and professionally. It is near impossible to tell that the porch has been patched and his work indicated that he is a true artisan. We would highly recommend James and will certainly use him again in the future. We found him to be honest, practical, attentive to our concerns, professional and just a genuinely nice person. We are very pleased with the results of his hard work!

Mr. Todd had completed many projects for me over the years. I always contact him when needing a project or just repairs done. He built a fabulous fire pit in my back yard that I use all the time. Put on a new roof a few years back, and still no leaks or issues. Performed minor plumbing jobs, again no issues as yet. Drywall, painting, siding, the list goes on. Very knowledgeable and professional young man. He was almost always on time when expected, although there were some times when materials might not have arrived on time, etc., or that weather could delay work, both understandable. There was also a situation where I needed to call him back to fix something minor and he did it happily and in a timely manner.

The Home Inspection went great and as a Realtor, I will recommend LW Elmore & Associates to any client or anyone looking for a good quality home inspection. Les was our Inspector and he was very knowledgeable and offered suggestions on repairs needed for the home. He was very friendly and has a great sense of humor. My client felt confident in his ability to tell her about the home she was purchasing. Great Work!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
