We were very pleased with the work that Daniel & Jack did for us! They were both very easy to speak with about our hopes for the new handrails at our home. We asked for some special add-ons to our design, and they were very eager, helpful, and capable in creating just what we asked for. Overall ours was a very satisfying experience! We would highly recommend that you consult with them before making a final decision on your home project. You will be glad that you did!

Steve Walker of Accent Landscape Lighting provided prompt, courteous, expert, and affordable professional landscape lighting service after my aged system was decimated by a lightning strike. Specifically, he repaired two transformers, replaced one that was completely wrecked, removed and relocated “moonlighting” wires and mounts that were choking my trees, cleaned and refurbished as needed all of my fixtures, replaced worn wiring as needed, and relocated and re-aimed fixtures to more appropriately accent the current state of my trees and landscape features. He also replaced ALL of my system’s lightbulbs (and I have fifty (50) fixtures!) with LED lights so that my system now runs for a fraction of the previous cost! I am very, very pleased with his work, and as far as I am concerned he is my “go to” guy for all of my future landscape lighting needs. HIGHLY recommended!

I normally never write any reviews at all but felt I needed to write this one. I posted this job on Thumbtack and Reid, the owner, contacted me ASAP. I live in The Peninsula and needed the job done very quickly and he come over as soon as I told him this. It was already later in the day when I contacted him and he still came over to try to do the job. We ended up taking a lot of time discussing exactly what I needed done and actually ran out of daylight so he came back the following morning to finish. During our discussions, I asked him a lot of questions about his company and his background as I always want to know who I am working with. I will briefly say that I am a person that started my own company so I definitely appreciate someone that has the entrepreneurial spirit and is trying to make it on his own. Reid started this company a little while ago and is doing all the right things to grow it successfully. He is personally involved with every aspect and appears to do whatever is necessary to make the customer happy. If you are looking for a landscape company or even as little as just having someone just mow your grass then this company is the one for you. Give them a chance and let him see what he can do for you. He is a polite man that will listen to exactly what you are wanting and then will offer any alternative suggestions without forcing them on you, which I very much appreciated. I promise you that you will not go wrong with this company. Give them a try

I am puzzled by some of the reviews I am seeing for Travis and Crossroads Turf Services. My experience was nothing short of superb! Having just completed three home projects, and going through 3 sets of estimates, contracts, and work completion there is no contest at all. I received the most outstanding and professional service from Crossroads. Travis arranged to come see my project within a day of my request, and had an written estimate in my inbox within 48 hours. He took time with the walk through and asked questions to be sure we were on the same page. Once I accepted the bid, we kept in touch as I waited for completion of my deck demolition and construction. When that project was going badly and taking 3 times as long as expected, he graciously pushed back my scheduled date by a week. Communication was easy and prompt. My project was, in the scope of things, on the smaller side. I asked him to pull up all rotting landscape ties from the beds outside my home-about a dozen of them. I wanted the beds mulched. In my courtyard, I had dirt in areas where a larger deck had been, and a mess of weeds everywhere else. I wanted about 300 sq feet of sod, all beds edged and mulched, and a hydrangea and rose bush moved. After discussing how to protect my drainage system and the new deck, he suggested repurposing unused paver bricks to protect the drain area, and rocks surrounding the base of the deck. All work was completed in a day, and I could not be more pleased. I did not like my yard the morning her arrived, and that evening it was the best part of my home. I love the transformation, and would recommend Crossroads without hesitation. I already have!

Clay and two guys took out trees, tilled in topsoil, sod my front yard and seeded my large back yard. Clay is extremely friendly and professional. He has the necessary heavy equipment to make quick work of a large project. Afterwards, they cleaned up my driveway and street, using a power washer. I would definite use Green Tek Landscapes again.

Chris did a landscaping job for me. It was a tough job. My yard was full of rocks. The other landscaper who looked at it...I never heard from again! Chris removed the rocks, brought in topsoil, seeded, etc. He also stayed late to clean up. The price was reasonable. I would hire him again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.
