I have had excellent experiences with Abraxas Productions. James is always very prompt in returning calls/emails and answering questions regarding recording/mixing. The space is ideal for "real" instrument tracking, solo artists or full music groups.

Randall exceeded our expectations! We had so many positive comments from our guests about the music for our event. I was the MOG and sourced Randall for our upscale rehearsal dinner and wedding-weekend welcome party. Not from Charlotte, I found Randall after a comprehensive search. Randall was so professional, gearing his playlist and style to the portion of the evening and crowd he was playing to. Classic, jazzy, acoustic, folksy, classy, Randall is a gifted musician--with a unique talent on a harp guitar (so impressive!) I cannot recommend Randall more highly for his talent, his professionalism and what he contributed to our evening.

John Doll has been my friend and colleague for over two years. He is a very talented guitarist in many genres, e.g. classical, rock, blues, etc. He is also an excellent teacher. I observed him in graduate school when he taught group guitar classes to non music majors. Any child or adult would be lucky to have John as their instructor for guitar.

I met with Lee who was extremely professional. When I came he let me listen to some of the work he'd done with other artists. Then he listened to the words and music that I had for the song I want to record. He provided his best professional opinion about which route to take and created a roadmap of how the song should go to provide the best sound quality and he even advised me to use my musicians who initially played the song. He also made me feel comfortable and didn't treat me like I didn't know anything. I see a very bright business relationship blooming. Thanks Lee I look forward to our next sessions. Kudos! !

My wife and I were at Buddy's last night and saw your show. Just want you to know it was the most fun we've had in a long time and yes we do need to get out more lol, but seriously, you did a great job with the audience and keeping things flowing. My wife was the blonde that you kept trying to get up on stage, she sang with one of the two Army guys that were sitting behind us. They sang a horrible Barry Manilow song. Just a little hint, my wife is a store manager and the last thing she wants to do is socialize, but after a few drinks her inhibitions go away. On the weekends we have our own "house party" where we play music and she will sing. She literally has a photographic memory when it comes to lyrics, which still amazes me to this day. And she raps pretty darn good for a white girl too, and she's a New Yorker, but don't hold that against her lol. She can kick out some Jason Mraz and Blues Traveler, she does an awesome job with their song Hook and challenged the Sgt. Major to learn it for next week haha. So hopefully we will see you on Wednesdays, thats our typical night because of the 50 cent wings. This is only the second time in our sixteen years of being together that she's done Karaoke, you did a great job and we had a fantastic time. Also love the trumpet guy, my wife thanked him for playing and told him my dad played trumpet for years with my mom in a variety band when I was young and has since passed and his playing reminded us of him. She said a tear welled up in his eye, I understand he follows you from event to event. That's awesome! Anyway, I'll introduce ourselves next time and just wanted to say thank you for entertaining us last night, it's a memory we will have for a long, long time! Jeff and Dawn Arwine

I hate to sound cliche, but if I had to describe Chris in one word it would be 'professional'. The recording studio is exceptional with fair rates. Chris will mix and master your tracks with the same attitude, love & care as if it were his own track. There is no other studio in the surrounding area that will match the quality or rates of Coalition Recording Studio. I recommend C.R.S & Chris Stowe to any and every artist.

I have know Peter for 10 years as a classical violinist and as a fiddler in a blue grass band. He is very skilled and technical in many music styles. He doesn't just enjoy playing the violin, but enjoys what the violin does and the essence of the instrument. Because of the variety in his talents and passion, he makes an excellent teacher and offers perspective that you won't find in other teachers.

After roughly 15+ years of teaching myself how to play guitar & piano, I decided to take my abilities to the next level. One day, after some extensive web-searching, I discovered Yana on Craigslist and decided to reach out to her. The first thing I noticed is the fact that she taught at Boston University for many years and this indicated a very high level of professionalism. Secondly, I watched a YouTube video of Yana playing boogie woogie style piano songs and quickly realized that not only is she highly advanced and proficient on the technical side of music theory, but she also plays with a lot of feeling and emotion, leading to her filling the world with life and light. Beautiful, right? One thing led to another and eventually we met up for lessons and I must say that it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. What one gets with Yana is a genius of a musician, with a quiet, humble presence that is at once both commanding and relaxing. Essentially, you’ll be learning from someone who is going to make you feel at ease, but who will never stumble with her instructions and she certainly doesn’t falter for words. Her rates are reasonable and competitive, she’s always punctual and eager to see people develop their skills. I’ve never been disappointed with her in any capacity and I would bet the same goes for the rest of her students. Her world-class musicianship and sharp, artistic wizards make it beyond easy for me to recommend Yana to anybody, regardless of their current experience and abilities. A+

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

  • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
  • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
  • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
