We needed to board our two youngest dogs while we visited family out of state. Sasha is a year old Dutch Shepherd and Buddy is a year and a half old Beagle mix. This was the first time we would be leaving our babies with anyone. I was extremely nervous but Ellie was so reassuring. After a phone conversation to determine if this would be a good fit, we agreed to have our dogs meet Ellie. She was so great with them. She is a trained groomer and seemed very comfortable around dogs. After only 5 minutes into our visit, her oldest son was petting and sitting on the floor with Buddy. He is really nervous around people but he really seemed to take to that young man. Sasha is completely outgoing and spent the visit playing with the two youngest children. She is incredibly high energy and loved having little human playmates. We decided to hire Ellie and it was the best decision. While we were gone, she sent daily updates on how our "fur babies" were doing. She sent pictures and videos regularly. Everyday my husband would check his cell phone to look at these. It was so reassuring for us to see how well our pets were faring while we were away. We even noticed that Buddy was starting to feel comfortable enough to play with Sasha and the children. I am so glad we decided to hire an in home boarding location as our dogs really received the personalized attention and love that they would have received had they been home with us. The best part was that Ellie bathed both Sasha and Buddy before we picked them up so they were clean and beautiful. All in all, this was an amazing experience and we are thankful to have found not only a person we can trust to take care of our babies, but we now have a groomer we like, as well.

Our dog, Stella, loves Lynnette and so do we! Lynnette does more than just walk Stella- she really treats her like she was her own pup. I feel so lucky that we have Lynnette. She is prompt, reliable, and great with all pets. I highly recommend Furball Friends for all of your pet care needs- from dog walking and cat sitting to even overnight stays. Thank you Lynnette for all that you do!

Sherrill has been fantastic. My pups are not the easiest to work with - one has some fear issues. But Sherrill takes the time to make my pups comfortable. She is dependable, competent, and so easy to work with. If you need for a pet sitter, give her a call, let her meet your pets and see if you disagree - I don't think you will!

Teachers Pets was very quick to respond to our request for services. They talked with us about our animals and helped us chose the perfect sitter based on our animals’ personalities. Our sitter sent us great updates assuring us all was well with our home and fur babies. Our house was left in perfect condition, just how we left it. All services were provided punctually assuring our pets were not having to hold it or be by themselves for too long. Paying was also easy! The entire process was positive and easy going. We definitely would recommend Teachers Pets!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a house sitter?

House-sitting can be a lifesaver when you’re leaving town for any length of time. Whether you work remotely, you’re taking a much-needed vacation, or you just want to road-trip for a few days, it’s wise to have a pro keep an eye on your house and pets while you’re gone. Your home is more likely to stay safe and you won’t have to wrangle the kitty into a kennel to travel with you. The national average pet-sitting price ranges between $20 and $30. Pet-sitting and house-sitting costs will vary based on where you live in the country and regional labor rates. Another factor in cost is how long you want the house-sitter to stay. Some people prefer to have the house-sitter stay the night at their house, perhaps to care for an elderly pet or simply to keep a watchful eye on the home at all times. Overnight stays will cost more, ranging anywhere from $50 to $100, depending on services provided. For day visits, house-sitting and pet-sitting prices will increase incrementally the longer the visit and the more service you want performed. For example, a quick 10-minute visit to feed and walk the pet and bring in the mail could be $12.50, a 25-minute visit could be $18, a 40-minute visit $25, and a 50-minute visit $32. How much should you pay for a pet sitter?

Pet sitting provides your precious pet with in-home care. A pet-sitter can make a brief visit during the day to provide snacks, playtime or affection, or stay at your house for one or more nights to tend to your pet. Prices for pet-sitting will vary based on length of the visit. Nationally, pet sitting prices range from $20 to $30, although prices run higher for your sitter to stay the night. Prices will also be affected by where you live in the country. Here are some examples of average pet-sitting prices based on length of time and region:

    • 30-minute visit: $17 in a small Texas town.
    • 30-minute visit: $25 in Southern California.
      • 45-minute visit: $28.
      • 60-minute visit: $32.
    • Overnight stay (10 hours): $50 in Texas.
    • Overnight stay (10 hours): $85 in Southern California.
      • 12 hours: $100.
      • 24 hours: $200. This is a good option for a sick, elderly or brand-new pet that needs constant supervision.
