We had some water damage recently. We were very pleased with the job Lee and Brian did at our home. They repaired a hole in the ceiling that was damaged from water, repainted the ceiling and installed new tile in a bathroom. They also installed new tile in a small area in our basement. They were polite, friendly, and cleaned up after themselves. The quote Jon gave us was very reasonable. We will be using their services again, for sure!

Our project was for a master bathroom remodel and included the waterproofing and tiling of our shower stall plus tiling the entire bathroom floor. Like most homeowners we are very selective about who we choose to provide services in our home and set very high standards. Noel had no problems meeting our expectations and provided professional and timely services. He kept us well informed as he made progress and worked with us to obtain excellent results. We wil definitely ask for his services again for future projects and would strongly recommend him to our friends and family.

Mr. Martinez did some work for me and I am very pleased with him! I have been a homeowner for 8 years and have had the best experience! I am a single woman and am always leery about having strangers in my home. Mr. Martinez made me feel comfortable and was the consummate professional. He was on time and honored his quote. I hired him to replace a ceiling fan and when he got here, I mentioned a few other things that I needed. He proceeded to finish some work with my bathroom toilet and outside light in two hours. He is VERY REASONABLE with his pricing and I will definitely hire him again for additional work.

Major downstairs renovation at my house! Floors, walls, paint, appliances, chair rails, doors, etc! They do it all. Very helpful with insurance company paperwork. Stayed in constant contact, emailed frequently, called when necessary, and finished fast.

After building and/or remodeling 11 homes over the 28 years we've been married, Jonathon with Salazar's Express Services is hands down the most professional, caring, creative, and talented person we have ever worked with. He shows up when he says he will and does exactly what he has promised. His crew is very talented and they are all extremely hard workers. He helped us problem solve, was extremly patient, and his work was flawless! I recommend Salazar's Express without any hesitation and planning in using him again and again!

We need patching on our bathroom walls, including water damage repair and installation of a new exhaust fan. Steve did a wonderful job The walls turned out to be plaster, but he left them looking terrific and ready for the painter. He even took down some broken fixtures from the walls so he could patch those areas too. Steve was professional, and we're entirely satisfied with his work. We'll be hiring him again soon for another project.

Dan and his team are AMAZING and I feel so grateful to have found them! They are excited to work on my home which included almost an entire remodel...Removing walls in the kitchen for an open floorpan, completely remodeling the kitchen, moving a bathroom, moving the laundry room upstairs and creating a mudroom in it's place. Building into unused attic space to create a walk in closet and bathroom in my daughter's bedroom and remodeling and rearranging our master bathroom. Not to mention all the new flooring, cabinets, and drywall where there was once popcorn ceilings. And they were EXCITED to do it. Most people I interviewed were overwhelmed at the task or WAY too expensive. He was priced fairly yet the work quality is far superior to other remodeled homes I have seen. Don't even waste your time with other companies. I love that I felt like we were working together as a team and he was always willing to spend time with me making sure I felt comfortable with each step!

I can't say enough fabulous things about Geoff. He was quick to respond, well presented, on time, communicated very well. We needed a LONG list of SMALL tasks done from securing a light switch to patching a hole in the ceiling, matching and touching up old paint, caulking around the front door, filling in grouting in the bathroom, etc. to ready our house to sell. He worked around our schedule, showed up when he said he would, finished when he said he would, was neat and well organized with his billing. The one item that he could not fix (which he told us upfront he was concerned about) he deducted from the final bill. Call this guy! Hire this guy! We put our house on the market and had a contract in 48 hours. Thanks Geoff. Wish you could move with us. You would be my forever handyman!

Mr. Chad was very helpful in letting me know what was needed. I had the wrong parts and I needed to get the correct parts from Home Depot. He was willing to stay and complete other projects while I went to get the parts. He's very trustworthy in your home. He's efficient, quick, and has a great personality. He fixed my shower posi temp cartridge, Kitchen Sprayer, powder room plumbing, and put together my baby crib!

We hired Isaac and his crew to replace our downstairs floors. They did an amazing job! They showed up on time and stayed super late in order to finish up the job the next day. These guys went over and beyond what I had even expected. I HIGHLY recommend them for any of your home improvement needs. My husband and I are actually going to hire them to remodel our bathrooms and our future investment property.

John came out to install 3 doors in our home. Not only did a wonderful job with that installation, he also did a renovation of our bathroom at the same time. The turn around from the time he came out to do the estimate until the job was complete was so fast. He is extremely professional, on time and his work is of amazing quality. After 20 years in Charlotte it is amazing to find an honest and trustworthy contractor. I will definitely be using him again soon.

We can't say enough great things about Jackson & his crew. The recently did a lot of interior painting & dry wall for us & the house looks amazing! Great communication, friendly & very timely. We have a vacation home & live out of state but he made it very easy to get everything set up, pick out colors ect. This work was to be done in between guests & it was completed with perfection & everything cleaned up after. Our home was taken care of in the process of all the work going on (floors covered, items moved ect). We have already asked for quotes on some other remodeling work that we are wanting done. We would recommend Jackson highly!!

We completed a kitchen remodel including painting cabinets, new counters and backsplash and some minor adjustment to counters (removing Bar top and moving electrical). Paul did an amazing job. Everyone was friendly, accommodating and listened and adjusted without complaint. I would highly recommend this company based on their work and trustworthiness. The kitchen came out perfect and was completed in our very tight timeline.

We used Zachary in a remodeling project of our kitchen, family room, sunroom, and half bath. His professional manner in which he helped us choose color, texture, design, and functional products was so necessary for our project. Zach listened to us, paid attention to our style, but pushed beyond our comfort zone just a bit to keep us from being "stuck" and we are so grateful. He went to the trouble of offering numerous designs in numerous price ranges, which we appreciate. I would recommend Zach and would absolutely use him again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
