We hired Stacy Morgan Designs to paint the entire interior of our 2300 sq ft house--literally every room. Stacy is energetic and takes her time with the customer. She gave me great color ideas for each room. She knows what a color will look like when it's done, so she helped steer me away from colors that looked good on the swatch but would be too bright on a wall. The painters were friendly and detailed. Everything was completed on time and to our satisfaction. Great job!

Suzanne is excellent. Great eye for color and attention to detail. She designed a new color pallet for painting the entire interior and exterior of my house, then selected flooring, granite, and bathroom vanities. Its a whole new house.

Hilda with Vermillion Interiors saved me and my house!! I was on a very tight timeline with multiple design decisions needing to be made ASAP on a whole-house remodel job. I was stressed! I knew what I liked but not so much how to get there. Hilda came in and assisted with design decisions and - folks- bringing Hilda into this project is one of the best decisions I've ever made!!! She got to know my style and what I liked, then made suggestions as to colors, decorating and even staging. I could not be happier with Hilda- and how my house turned out. I LOVE THE OUTCOME!!! I COULD NOT BE HAPPIER!! Hilda is a great listener - a hard worker- very creative and inspiring- has a great eye for design and color - and is very easy to work with. It has been an absolute joy working with Hilda and Vermillion Interiors. I will continue to use her on my future projects. I highly recommend her to anyone looking for an EXCELLENT designer.

Sally helped me improve my house in many ways. She helped me reorganize my book shelves so they look balanced and added great color to my room. We also reworked the furniture placement so that it balances out with the space I have. She was very knowledgeable and extremely helpful. I would highly recommend hiring her.

Christy has an excellent eye for color and texture and creates a room that flows beautifully by working complementary pieces together. She has the ability to work lower priced products in with some higher end products to give the room an upscale feel from top to bottom without breaking the bank. She can work with various styles and tastes to create a model home feel. Every room I have seen of hers is nothing short of gorgeous! I have worked with her on small projects in the past from color selections to simple accent pieces, and on full room makeovers (a steal bargain) and remodeling advice. She has great trade contacts saving me a great deal on furniture which more than covered her design fee. Without question, I would recommend her for your interior design project needs!

My bathroom was long overdue for a redo. Except for new paint colors and accessories it was the same bathroom with the same tile and the same fixtures as it was when the house was built in the 60's. I wanted a whole new look and Lisa helped us accomplish it. I love the new color scheme, tile selections, cabinet design and my new shower. We not only have a whole new beautiful bathroom, we now have lots of storage thanks to replacing a small closet with built in storage. I love my new bathroom! Thanks Lisa!

I must commend Mr. Cherry for his impeccable sense of style and class, his incredible eye for modern and yet still classic design aesthetic and his professionalism. When I moved into my new home I wanted a contemporary touch, but still wanted the decor to accentuate the architecture of the restored Victorian. Mr. Cherry carefully selected an appropriate color scheme, and even made suggestions for furniture. His attention to detail, and natural eye for what works in a space not only transformed my house into a home, but in my honest opinion, made it into something far more: a work of art! Being an artist myself, I still walk in and am in awe of the fantastic job he has done. If you are looking for someone to completely redecorate your home or simply to revitalize your space, I highly recommend that you go with the best. Lisa designed the layout of my small business, as well as doing our graphics. She did a great job with both. Excellent eye for color, both in design of the store as well as in the logo. Her design captured just what I was looking for, a balance of comfort and elegance, utility and aesthetic. She helped develop a great flow through the space that keeps customers moving around and finding new items, and a great sense of welcome and home in a retail environment. The logo(s) she has done are clean, direct and eye-catching. When doing a trade name change several years into my business, she helped create a great new logo that looked brand new while incorporating some of the old logo elements, giving a wonderful connection between the two. Highly recommended!

I have had the pleasure of working with Ann on a couple of different occasions. I worked with her on the Ronald McDonald House project and a residential project. She has a great "eye" for fabrics and colors that coordinate well together and really enhance the space, as well as layout, furnishings and accessories! I would definitely recommend Ann for your next Design project!

It was a pleasure to work with Phizzy. She was creative, professional, easy to communicate with, while remaining affordable. We got far more than we expected from our consultation, and the house has never looked better. Phizzy was able to use our own art and accessories to minimize the amount we would need to purchase new. Her suggestions were thoughtful and respectful of our own personal style. She jumped right in and helped move furniture, hang art, arrange books and offered her own time to search for staging furniture. I would highly recommend her.

Barbara was simply wonderful. She gave us lots of ideas on how to present our home for showing. She even helped us move furniture around, told us what to take out, what color to paint the walls, and showed us several ways to make our home more appealing to buyers. I loved her and all her ideas!!

          About

I have an interior design, art, and home staging background. I have worked at Lowe's Home Improvement for over five and a half years in their home decor and paint department. The home decor is dealing with shades, blinds, shutters, and ready-made curtains. I also helped mix paint, do color matches, and help customers select paint and stain colors. My last position was selling furniture, area rugs, and accessories to customers. Before that, I did work as a design consultant for a tile company.

          Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

          What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

          • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
          • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
          • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
          • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

          • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
          • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
          • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
          • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
