John repaired a Crawlspace door and installed an upholstered headboard for us. He was knowledgeable and suggested a change on the door that made it work better than before. He was on time, friendly and very careful with our furniture. I would definitely hire John again for jobs around our house.

It was such a pleasure to have Jimmy come to my home to install window sills in the sun room. It is clear that he has genuine passion for his work and has a gift for working with wood. He did a beautiful job for an excellent price, I will be hiring him again in the near future. He responded to my requests and calls right away, worked with my schedule to make it convenient for me, answered all of my many questions, and was very kind and courteous. My sister and I are real estate investors and residential property renovators. We are always on the lookout for quality contractors who perform good work at a competitive price. Upon meeting Marcel and his wife we immediately knew we wanted to work with them. Their other Thumbtack reviews were impressive and their level of professionalism was what we were looking for. Marcel and his team renovated a 3/1 ranch style home for us. Improvements included: complete kitchen and bathroom overhaul, painting, carpet, new window casing and installation, new siding, and other decorative cosmetic fixes throughout the home. The work he and his team performed on this property was impeccable. He keeps you informed throughout the process with daily calls and status updates. His initial quote was itemized and true to budget. There were plenty of times we checked in and he was working into the evenings and on the weekends. Not because he had slipped on the schedule but because he knew it was in everyone’s best interested to get the job done in a timely manner. He also makes sure that the work is to your level of satisfaction before he moves on to the next task. At the end of the project we were totally satisfied. We got a quality renovation at a reasonable price. The house was listed on the market and sold on the very same day!!! Marcel and his MHI Works team is a pleasure to work with. Not only does he and his team do great work but his customer service skills are outstanding. He communicates with you throughout the process, constantly gives you updates and makes you feel confident that you will achieve whatever your projects goals are. There is no doubt we will use MHI Works again. They are listed as a preferred contractor moving forward. Al D. Swanky Footprints Properties

Finished an unfinished 2 car garage. 3D hung sheetrock, replaced an exterior door, installed window trim for 3 windows and painted everything. Good job overall with only a few very minor quality points which would have made it perfect.

I was very impressed with the service I recieved. He came to my home in time and installed my door professionally. The door was not salvageable so he went to Lowes and purchased a new door and frame for me and then installed it. He did not charge me extra for going to get the door, I paid for the door and he still charged me the same quote he had previously quoted. I will us him in my future home projects. Thumbtacks is my new favorite go to in order to find people to assist me with my future home repair needs.

Michael was very responsive from the beginning and continued with that responsiveness through completion of the project. He did a great job replacing several window panes and was professional and courteous throughout the process .... Glass is expensive and I hope I don't need glass services again BUT if I do, he will definitely be the first person I reach out to .... :-)

Chris and his team originally came to install for toilets in my home and did a great job with that and told me they could do other work as well. I had them come back and build a pergola that I bought from Sam’s. They also removed the carpet for my stairs and painted them and surrounding areas. Also installed a kitchen sink faucet for me. I’m going to have them come back and change the vanity tops in my bathroom and put flooring down as well, as I saw some pictures of the work he has done in that regard. Very professional and adapt to changes and requests along the way.

Bill replied to our initial request to build a small portico roof over our front door. We had some ideas in mind, but appreciated Bill's honesty that some of our plans may not be best for our house. He worked with us to come up with a better plan, and we could not be happier with it. Since we were impressed with him, we asked him to do other repairs from our inspection report. Bill was hard working, honest and did a thorough job. We will definitely contact him again if needs arise!

We recently had Lucas' company, Built Strong Renovations, at our home replacing siding, some windows and wood rot repair on remaining windows. We were extremely please with Lucas, his attention to detail and customer skills made this a pleasant experience. His guys put in some very long days to ensure the work was done and the house was always protected from weather. Thank you Lucas. Karen and Rick

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

    • Trim repair:
      • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
      • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
    • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
    • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
      • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
      • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
        • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
