Laurel is a capable and experienced tutor. She is especially skilled in teaching children for whom English is a second language, or who may be having difficulty coming from a home where English is not spoken well. She is patient and has a great variety of materials that she draws upon depending on the student's need.

I’ve taken my SATs a couple of times and although I am not a bad student, I just felt that I could have done better, I knew it inside, but just could not find where it was. I got the Getting Into The Ivys tutoring program and worked with a Chelsea tutor. What I really like about my tutor is that she’s a qualified teacher and is professional and knows how to actually teach concepts properly. I really did not want to take any chances. Going to university is very important to me and my family. Susan my tutor developed a special study plan just for me, which helped me focus on my key weaknesses, without feeling de-motivated, in-fact I was so enthused by her, I actually looked forward to all my sessions. She is a brilliant tutor and I am so very grateful. I was able to increase my composite core by 100. I am very pleased.

Mr. Nelson is by far the best math teacher I have ever come across. I first met Mr. Nelson when I was 15. Math wasn't my favorite subject back then, but he made it my favourite subject very soon. I excelled in Maths and was fast-tracked to sit for my O-Level Math paper one year before the rest of my class. He is really a Math God. More than anything, he is a great person. In grade 11, I was struggling with Math, since I had selected to take the subject at Higher Level. Mr. Nelson was so busy, but he still made time for me. He used to tutor me at 5am! What a teacher! He really is such a great person - and sometimes he did not charge us since he knew my parents were trying hard to pay school fees. When I went on to university in Singapore, I started tutoring students in Math. And when I would get stuck sometimes, Mr Nelson was just a call away. He'd help me solve the sum then and there. I can write so much more about how great he is, but I don't think any of it will do justice. What I can say is, if you need the best math teacher (I hear he tutors in other subjects too now), then Mr. Nelson is your guy. He is simply the best. Oh, and I have recommended him to many others too - all who have used his services share the same sentiments. He is our Math God, and alwyas will be.

Howard have been tutoring my two daughters so that they could increase there SAT/ACT scores. He slso tutors me in Pre-Cal Math and English Literature. He is an excellent tutor that knows the material he is teaching. He is always willing to go above and beyond. He makes sure we understands the material. I was surprised when after just 3 weeks working with my daughter, she was able to raise her SAT scores by 90 points. My daughter has an A in Math now all because of Howard. Myself was failing Math in College. I had a D in the class and now I have a B. My first test I got 46%, and after working with Howard within two weeks I got a 94% on my next test. I don’t know how he know these stuff. It just comes naturally to him. If you want your child or even you has an adult going back to colkege like myself; Howard his the guy you need. My daughters are not the easiest kids to teach, but everytime Howard leaves my home they have more confidence in themselves and they grades have increase. So I know he’s doing a grest job.I recommend him with a 110%.

I had already taken an LSAT course before working with Alex. While the course helped, Alex’s strategies took it to the next level I needed. He never contradicted what I had originally learned, but instead reshaped my perspective on the LSAT. He’s also passionate about tutoring, which is a bit odd at first, but you get used to it. I definitely recommend him as a tutor.

Our child has worked with Linda for approximately six months and has shown strong improvements in math. From the outset, she had our student work on organizational skills which complemented the tutoring sessions and led to greater understanding of the material being taught. She is very familiar with the Wake County Schools math curriculum. I highly recommend Linda.

She was extremely knowledgeable about the PSAT/SAT/ACT and had lots of helpful resources for learning and reviewing material. Also, she provided several good strategies for how to approach specific types of questions and the test as a whole. Definitely time well spent!

My daughter has been going to Mathnasium for quite a while. She was really behind in math, she hated it, in fact. She was in 9th grade but working from a 4th grade level. Mr. King and his crew at Mathnasium of Garner were able to work with her 1 on 1 and she actually is working on grade level in grade 10 now, or Math 2 as they call it in HS. She is not afraid of math anymore, in fact she gets 100's on some of her tests and quizzes . I can't believe the difference. She goes willingly to tutoring, she likes math. I really can't say enough good things. There really is no price you can put on the changes I see in her improvement.

Club Z was exactly what we were looking for our son. Evan just graduated high school and is preparing to go to college this fall. He needed help with improving upon his writing skills so that he would be well prepared to handle the writing challenges in college. Becky was Evan's tutor and she did an excellent job in helping him achieve that goal. His writing skills have greatly improved as well as his confidence in his abilities. I would highly recommend Club Z for anyone looking for tutoring. Cecelia Mills, Durham N.C.

Krithika is an excellent tutor. She knows all the conventions, rules, expectations, and online resources for topics of high school writing such as critical thinking, literary analysis, research papers, SAT prompts, and college admissions. Like her profile says, she brings passion to the subject. Her energy and enthusiasm are contagious, so not only has my son’s writing improved, but so has his interest in the subject. She’s an excellent communicator who can connect with the student as well as mediate with the parent. I am sure her advice and guidance are going benefit my son for the rest of his life.

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

When should you start preparing for the SAT?

It’s never too early to start preparing for college entrance exams, but professional tutors recommend a baseline of at least three months before the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is the gold standard for college admissions, and SAT prep is important for doing well. Your child’s SAT scores will have a major effect on which colleges send acceptance letters. Professional tutors can work with your kids to coach them on how to take the SAT, as well as studying the actual academic content. Doing well on the SAT is as much about knowing the right test-taking strategies as about having a firm grasp of the subject matter.

To understand your student’s readiness for the SAT, they can take the pre-SAT (PSAT) starting in their sophomore year. SAT prep can be structured around the student’s PSAT scores, so tutors can address any challenges and weak subject areas. If your child has their sights set on an Ivy League or elite school, SAT prep with a tutor or study program should start at least six months before the test. Vocabulary is a key element of the student’s SAT preparation and success. The national average rate for SAT prep tutoring is $70 per hour.

What is in the SAT test?

As your child is preparing for the SAT, it’s helpful to know the specifics of the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is made up of three main categories and one optional essay. Students have a total of three hours to take the test, with an additional 50 minutes for the optional essay. In total, there are 154 questions. During SAT prep, it’s helpful to take timed practice exams to understand how you’ll do during the actual test. Here is a brief overview of each of the four categories:

        • Reading: 65 minutes with 52 questions. The Reading test measures command of evidence, words in context, analysis in history and social studies, and analysis in science.
        • Writing and Language: 35 minutes with 44 questions. The Writing and Language test covers the same topics as Reading, as well as expression of ideas and standard English conventions.
        • Math: 80 minutes with 58 questions. The Math test looks at the student’s understanding of algebra, problem-solving and data analysis, and advanced math in the context of fluency, conceptual understanding, and applications.
        • Essay (optional): 50 minutes with 1 essay. The essay will demonstrate the student’s competency with writing, analysis and reading.
