Victor installed an outdoor security light, which required him to drill through a brick wall, run wiring, and install a switch. He was on time and professional. Bottom-line, he did an outstanding job and we plan to hire him again and refer others to him as well.

I contacted Woodmont Builders to do a job for a customer we moved out to their area. Within hours of my initial contact, Ron not only contacted the customer, but set up the appointment and within a few days, the job was completed. The customer was left extremely happy with the work conducted and our company is very pleased with the reasonable pricing! I would absolutely recommend using them! Excellent! J.H. - NC.

Santiago responded to a request that was uniquely challenging. He initially responded just to remove tiling enclosing a 2nd fl bathtub, bc the tiles prevented a fix of a leaky faucet seeping water through below kitchen ceiling. I accepted Santiago’s offer to do the faucet repair as well bc he so clearly knew what he was talking about in plumbing repair. It ended up saving us a lot of money to have just him finish the job, bc tile repair & then 2nd trip out by a large plumbing outfit would’ve been expensive. Santiago did the job for such an INCREDIBLY good price that we paid him more & will be contacting this highly skilled “generalist” (also does dry wall, painting, etc.) very soon.

We are remodeling our kitchen and needed new ceiling drywall and a wall repaired with new drywall. Israel and Christian did an excellent job. They had to come to our house three times. The first time was to install, tape and mud. The final times were to do some final prep work and sanding. They do very good work and they care about the project they are working on. If we have any future projects, we would call the Correa Brothers again. Scott Henry

Roberto does very good work. He is sometimes hard to get up with but once he says he's coming, he'll be there. He stayed with us for 9 hours yesterday getting our list done. He knows a lot about a lot, as you would expect a handyman to do. Put up 2 ceiling fans; repaired steps and deck spindale; repaired wobbly toilet; hung pictures along high stairs/wall; replaced flappers in 3 toilets. Broken English makes him sometimes hard to understand, but he's very pleasant to be around and repeats himself as needed. Very personable. A U.S. Veteran for which we thank him for is service there. Fees are sometimes set, sometimes he accepts whatever can be paid. Plan to use him over and over, as long as he serves us well.

I had a sliding patio door installed. The guys had to cut into our brick exterior to make it fit, and they did an excellent job. Had a piece of trim that broke during the process and they came back the next week and replaced it and finished it up. Would use again.

I highly recommend Bill to anyone seeking a general contractor. Several months ago, Bill reinforced our deck for a hot tub and reinforced an area under our living room for a large saltwater aquarium. He also tiled our floor and knocked down a wall. He was very professional and courteous. He got the job done in a timely manner and for a fair price. One of his workers accidentally broke a window, but Bill replaced it promptly and with no issues. We're planning to hire him again for future projects!

The team (Charles, Corey and Luis) is great to work with. They were able to stay on-budget and completed the project in 3 days (project: removing a wall in between kitchen and dining room as well as adding a wall in between kitchen and study). My husband and I are happy with the results.

Daniel came to help us with some interior painting in an office that we were renting - he did a great job covering up some logos we had painted on the wall. He was very professional, on time, completed the job, and left the office very clean. I would recommend him for any work you need done. In addition, we will be hiring him for some work we need done on our personal residence.

I am an architect, renovating my own home - that means I am very particular! Ours is a modern aesthetic. Phil and his crew framed the project. The guys made quick work of some very challenging framing areas - we turned an attic into a second story without removing the roof, adding significantly to the structural requirements of the floor, walls, and roof system. They reframed an area on the first floor that did require removing part of the roof - note, we lived in the home during this entire process. They took advantage of a 5-day dry weather streak and had that part complete and dried in, so we were never at risk with the rain. Additionally they added an exterior roof over a future deck - I will definitely be having them back to put that together in a few weeks! Again, I had a very precise post, beam, and rafter layout, and they did it beautifully. I found the crew to be respectful, and responsive to my requests for very specific layouts and window openings. They also installed the windows, most of which were very large with not much room to maneuver. I felt comfortable discussing pricing, change orders, and schedule with Phil. He works hard to keep his customers happy. Thanks Phil - and crew!

John and Chad remodeled the master bedroom, everything, from floor to ceiling, wall to wall, door to door. We absolutely love our tranquil space. I needed it done in a specific time frame, and they finished a day early with no sacrifice to quality! Highly recommend.

Dave remodeled our entire basement in just one week. He built a new wall, added hardwoods, wired, put in new doors, and painted. He was there every day and stayed late until the job was done. I definitely recommend him for any remodeling project you have. Very reasonable and efficient.

I only needed one wall painted—about 350 sqft. Other painters shrugged off the request with a north of $200 minimum. These guys came out, did good quality work, and for a reasonable price. I will definitely be using them again.

I was connected with Encore, specifically Mike and Joe via Lowe's when I wanted to have an entire kitchen and dining room remodel done. Both rooms were very dated, felt closed in and dark. The team at Encore did an amazing job removing a load bearing wall, securing all inspections, and I now have a kitchen and dining room that looks even better than I could have imagined. My only regret is that I didn't go directly through them instead of Lowe's as I know it would have been cheaper and be completed quicker. See my attached photos to view the beautiful work they did for me.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

    • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
    • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

    • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
    • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
    • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
