James and his crew from Raptor Valley Landscape for a big cleanup and maintenance job at my house recently. The job took several hours and I was extremely pleased with the results! James made sure that I was kept informed of what they were doing and asked for my input when necessary. At the end of the day, James made sure that I was satisfied and offered to come back out if I found anything that I wasn't happy with. I would highly recommend James and his crew and plan to continue to use them for my landscaping needs!

Tray and his team mowed, trimmed, cleaned garden beds, and mulched. Their work was spot on and my yard is the envy of our street. They were priced just right, timely, and very professional. I plan to use Tapp's for all my landscaping needs.

Jay was extremely easy & professional to work with! My husband and I had never hired a landscaper before so we were thrilled to have such positive first experience. Jay gave us a great quote, and had the job done (perfectly, I might add) in less than 24 hours. He was respectful to our vision, yard, and our budget. Jay had fantastic ideas that made our project even more beautiful & unique. We'll most certainly be giving Jay a call for our next project, and suggesting him to any friends & family that need tree &/or landscaping.

Just bought a new house with lawn sprinklers. Could not get it to work. Cole came out, diagnosed the problem quickly, obviously knew the system even though it was his first trip here. He had it up and working in 30 minutes, fully checked out, and reprogrammed. His got my business from now on!

My wife and I moved to Greesboro last summer and had some issues with the house we purchased including some retaining wall problems, Scott was able to diagnose the problem and remedy it with an inexpensive solution, we have since then used him for all of our projects, this guy really knows how to save you time and money, as a matter of fact what he saved us we gave him as a tip, this guy is a life saver, we are very pleased with his demenor and his personality and his overall initiative. Additional project Scott has completed includes a 12' x 10' Brick Storage facility, 80' foot retaining wall and footings, low voltage landscape lighting, some light grading and finish grading for the pool we had installed this summer. Scott pays attention in leaving a clean work site everyday. Scott is the real jack of all trades and we highly recommend him, and you will not be dissapointed!

I am puzzled by some of the reviews I am seeing for Travis and Crossroads Turf Services. My experience was nothing short of superb! Having just completed three home projects, and going through 3 sets of estimates, contracts, and work completion there is no contest at all. I received the most outstanding and professional service from Crossroads. Travis arranged to come see my project within a day of my request, and had an written estimate in my inbox within 48 hours. He took time with the walk through and asked questions to be sure we were on the same page. Once I accepted the bid, we kept in touch as I waited for completion of my deck demolition and construction. When that project was going badly and taking 3 times as long as expected, he graciously pushed back my scheduled date by a week. Communication was easy and prompt. My project was, in the scope of things, on the smaller side. I asked him to pull up all rotting landscape ties from the beds outside my home-about a dozen of them. I wanted the beds mulched. In my courtyard, I had dirt in areas where a larger deck had been, and a mess of weeds everywhere else. I wanted about 300 sq feet of sod, all beds edged and mulched, and a hydrangea and rose bush moved. After discussing how to protect my drainage system and the new deck, he suggested repurposing unused paver bricks to protect the drain area, and rocks surrounding the base of the deck. All work was completed in a day, and I could not be more pleased. I did not like my yard the morning her arrived, and that evening it was the best part of my home. I love the transformation, and would recommend Crossroads without hesitation. I already have!

Larry was super friendly and professional. He gave me a great no pressure estimate (best one I had gotten out of 5), with a very good price at the time which included cutting debris into firewood sized logs for me. I would have chosen Barrows but I got an even lower estimate the next day after the storm knocked the top half of the tree down making a complicated job quite simple. Larry and his company, Barrows, definitely came across as very professional and trustworthy and great prices.

Chris did a landscaping job for me. It was a tough job. My yard was full of rocks. The other landscaper who looked at it...I never heard from again! Chris removed the rocks, brought in topsoil, seeded, etc. He also stayed late to clean up. The price was reasonable. I would hire him again.

Working with LA Design has been a wonderful experience. My yard was extremely neglected when I moved in and the landscaping and design that they did is absolutely gorgeous . My neighbors are constantly complementing me on how beautiful my front and backyard landscaping looks. They are also excellent at power washing and they also put in a French drain around the perimeter of my house averting the water from coming in my basement . The drain system they put in totally got rid of the rain water coming into my basement. I plan on using LA Design again and again!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
