Nathan called ahead and was on time. He was so friendly and knowledgeable. Told me his background experience in concrete work and roofing as we discussed the work he was going to do on my house. He did a thorough job ensuring he cleaned every bit of the downspouts and gutter debris. When he was done he told me all the details of what he found and gave some suggestions for problem areas without pressuring me to buy anything. He cleaned up afterward. His price was reasonable His business method is a great asset to this community.

I wanted to evaluate Kenneth and the crew after this job. The manner he handled this roofing and skirting, etc. was excellent. I want you to know that this all started while Carol & I were in Fl. I contacted 4 roofing contractor's and communicated with them through email as I had a hearing problem [due to a military engagement]. Kenneth was super in our commutations. And seemed very knowledgeable but we never met as we were in Fl at the time. We came home a day before they started and I [retired engineer] watched him and his crew. Needless to say I was [VERY] impressed along with Carol [retired Navy nurse comd] He and his crew will be HIGHLY recommended by us. I am thankful I had the good fortune to meet him through you. May the Lord bless you and your team well done.... Yours, Joseph Buri And Commander Carol Hinger

We had a railing on the front porch that rusted at the bottoms and fell off and Michael was able to re-bolt it into the concrete and make it look good. He also replaced the light on the front porch. He came out for an estimate the day after inquiring about this little project and came back the next day to finish it. Very timely, quality for cost, and very professional! Will use again for future projects.

Gustavo was prompt in responding to my request. He agreed to meet at our convenience. He provided a prompt quote for the work. He explained what he would do and completed the work when he said it would be completed. He repaired some concrete separations we had on our driveway. He also made some repairs to our patio. We are very happy with the work he did. I would hire him again if needed.

Plantz at first was slow to start because the rain held him up but after he started the project came together. What I liked was the price compared to other Landscape contractors prices that were through the roof! I mean I got one estimate for nearly $5000, You not only get quality work but a very good price.

I work odd hours from home and Big Red Concrete made getting the sidewalk outside our new home replaced so easy! Lisa was willing to communicate by email and send her crew without having me on site, starting with a free quote, which made things so much faster for me. They did a great job and got it done in one day! Big Red will definitely be my first stop for future concrete needs.

When I hire a contractor, I steal from Forrest Gump... Contractors "are like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get." We got lucky this time by hiring Lesch Concrete. Jamie did a great job repairing, resurfacing, and staining our old chipped up concrete patio. He was careful with all the plants I had growing/overgrowing the edges, and put a beautiful finish on the patio that makes me want to invite the neighbors over, just so I can show it off! He kept me informed of each step, and was very careful to make sure my small space turned out beautifully. I have no hesitation in recommending him!

Our driveway was long overdue to be redone with cracks, dips and missing pieces. Valdivieso Construction LLC did a great job. I cannot imagine a better group of workers. Our driveway looks fantastic. We are very pleased and have had others ask us who did it. Of course we referred them to Valdivieso. The concrete company did short them (and us) some concrete, but they were back here the next working day to finish it up. Scoring was day very timely and they cleaned up, re-trimming our adjacent flower bed and resetting the flagstone pavers to be level with the new driveway. Thank you Valdivieso for our new driveway and thank you thumb tack for leading us to them.

Ray Kelch was very professional and did an outstanding job with my concrete driveway expansion. He was prompt and completed the job in one day. I had drainage issues and he made sure he put a swale in the concrete so when it rained, water would flow to the curb. He made an extra cut and did extra work like even out the clay excavation and placed sand and even threw in extra rebar at no extra charge! He is very friendly and told me why he used a laser level to make sure my driveway would slope correctly, and basically explained all he did to make it a superb job that will last me for many years. I was very satisfied with the price he charged, which was less than other competing bids. In addition, he arranged for the concrete delivery and finished the surface very nicely to match my existing driveway. I plan on using his services for my next project, which will be an outdoor deck. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good concrete contractor?

Concrete contractors pave driveways, build foundations for homes, install retaining walls, create hardscaping for front and back yards, build concrete steps, and so much more. When searching for a driveway contractor, read reviews from previous customers and ask for referrals. Ask the contractor for photos of examples of their work that’s similar to what you want. Confirm they will get the proper permits so your driveway is up to code. Hiring a driveway contractor to install concrete can average $5-$6 per square foot, or more, depending on where you live, the slope and grade of the driveway site, and regional labor costs. For a new asphalt driveway, the cost could average from $3-5 per square foot. A standard concrete driveway of 500 square feet averaging $5-$6 per square foot would cost $2,500-$3,000 — so it pays to research someone who will do quality work. Excavation and grading work can increase your cost per square foot significantly. Ask whether the contractor provides a materials and labor warranty for their work. Some cracking of the concrete may occur as it settles, but you should talk with your contractor about any structural or aesthetic concerns you have. How much does it cost to redo a concrete driveway?

Replacing or renovating a damaged or time-worn asphalt or concrete driveway can boost your curb appeal and add to your home value. If your concrete driveway is nearing 20 years or more, it may be wise to invest in an entirely new driveway, instead of redoing your current one. Asphalt driveways average 15-20 years of life, so if you start needing major repairs around the 15 year mark, weigh the pros and cons of repairing or replacing it. Request bids from two to three driveway contractors to determine pricing and project scope, and check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack. Here are some examples of average costs:

    • The national average cost to hire a concrete specialist is $2,750, but that price can vary greatly depending on the work needed to repair and resurface your concrete driveway, the square footage of the project, current costs of concrete, and regional labor rates.
    • Driveway contractors average $2-$3 per square foot to smooth and resurface your asphalt driveway.
    • Resurfacing concrete driveways averages $3-$10 per square foot. Pricing can depend on repairs needed, project size and geographic location.
    • Nationally, the average cost for resurfacing a 500-square-foot driveway ranges from $2,000 to $5,000.
    • Sealant for a concrete drive can cost $20-$80 per gallon.
    • Sealant for an asphalt drive averages 25 cents per square foot.

    What do paving contractors do?

Paving contractors can be hired to install a concrete or asphalt driveway at your home, office or property. They can also repave an asphalt or concrete driveway that has been damaged by time, weather or heavy loads. When you are looking for a driveway contractor, request quotes from at least three professionals who are in good standing and have great customer reviews. They should do a site visit and write you a bid, detailing the work involved, materials needed, approximate length of the project and estimated cost.

The site for your new driveway will determine costs and the work required for your contractor. First, the ground must be excavated to lay a clear path. This means removing any trees, bushes and stumps. Next, the driveway contractor will grade the area, making a level surface for the concrete or asphalt. To ensure proper drainage, driveway contractors should install a sub-base of compacted gravel (or similar) 4 inches-8 inches deep, depending on your soil type. Then the concrete or asphalt may be poured and smoothed over the top. Your driveway contractor should recommend an appropriate sealant for your climate and advise you on curing time.
