I knew Dan from our time together in Peace Corps Guyana, and having him around with his sharp eye and compassionate lens was nothing short of inspiring. There was a whole world full of magical traditions, lush landscapes, and soulful people to capture and Dan did it expertly, always respectful of his subjects. With one shot he could capture the wisdom an elder community Rastaman, in another, the solemn reverence of Hindu ceremonies. He has such an unimposing, inviting presence that no matter race or class people felt comfortable around him. Kids, too. I asked him to photograph the high school where I was teaching one afternoon so I could remember my classes. The kids adored him. I still have those photos and when I look at them I can instantly feel the heat, hear my students chatter. Their eagerness, pain, and joy - as well as my fear, pride, and sadness - were all there, thanks to Dan’s keen ability to document the complexities of humanity. Dan’s a true pleasure to work with and one of those guys who not only gives you a lifetime of memories, but a lifetime of loyalty.

After a bit of haggling and begging, I convinced Dan that he should fly to California to shoot my best friend's wedding in October 2010. It was a big job since he was going to shoot the rehearsal dinner in San Diego and the wedding in Long Beach (there was the night before the wedding at Disneyland.. which I'm sure was a complete inconvenience.) Dan had some lovely shoots of the bride and her family at Ocean Beach tide pools and jumping into the tide at night. He also had lovely pictures of my friend's wedding dress and "mickey ears" while at Disney. His photos of the wedding ceremony on a small boat were charming, and full of the intimate details that make a small wedding special - the smashing of the cake, the tearful toast by the 8-year-old daughter, the love of a couple, and character of the groomsmen. All together, Dan spent 4 days being lead around Southern California and being at the whim of a demanding wedding planner (and Disney fanatic) and survived with some lovely photos and a little fun. He was very good with the children in the wedding party and the bride. The wedding was probably one of his first weddings to shoot but he handled it professionally. And I've seen his work in other weddings which also was stellar. His experience as a photojournalist will insure that he will not miss "that one moment" but capture it with expert knowledge.

Dan took my daughter's pictures and they captured beautifully who she is. He was both spontaneous and traditional and I was so in love with the photos I had him take her at 3 and again at 5. Needless to say, he will hopefully take her pictures for years to come.
