Lisa was so reassuring and professional over the phone.. She was so honest with me about my training with my dog, we were actually able to resolve most issues with a phone consultation. She could have pressured me into signing on to a training program but she has integrity and the experience to recognize that my concerns over my dog were minor enough where I "didn't need her", but she was still caring enough to make sure she coached me appropriately over the phone anyway. Thank you Lisa...

Training a 2 year old dog, who was trained to pee & poop on dog mats. BIG MISTAKE!!!!!~ Still working on that. A new dog would be nice. or go back 2 years. Jacquie is great but won't take my dog home with her. Still working on the above. LOL

We are half way through our 6 week training of our puppy, and so far it has been amazingly successful! Our little Penelope is learning so quickly. Kristin really cares about the animals, and making sure you understand how to communicate the lessons to your pets on your own as well.

Ashley does a great job with both the dogs and the owners. I am amazed at how my dog has learned with her and I have learned too! I am on my 4th class with her and I would highly recommend her to anyone. She has an amazing ability to balance training the dog with encouraging and teaching the humans at the same time!

Karen is wonderful with my dog! Usually after the initial meet & greet I prefer to be at the first few visits until I know my dog and the pet sitter are comfortable with each other. But my dog took yo Karen immediately and I was able to skip that step very comfortably. My dog fell in love with her instantly, and he is usually a very cautious dog. And as dog lovers know, we can trust their instincts. Karen has been so flexible and goes above & beyond. I'm so grateful I found her!

We are so grateful to have found Claire! She is a true animal lover and it is such a relief we know our fur/feather/(pig skin?) babies are in her care when we are away. All of our pets love her! She is mature, responsible, thorough, professional, reliable and able to think on her feet and take initiative. She cares for our dog, pig, chickens and goats when we are away. You will be thankful you found her too!

About

I have over 4 years of experience as a pet sitter. I have done overnight pet sitting as well for up to a week at a time. I am also very active due to my military training, so running with dogs a couple of times a day would be a nice workout for both myself and your pet.

As a lover of all animals, I provide dog walking services, pet care, and behavior modification for all animals.

About

Caring for your beloved dog can be difficult when it comes to working a full day. Now, you can rest assure that your pet is getting some love and attention while you are away. I will walk your dogs and make sure that they are let out during the day, provide them with food and water and give them some good old TLC so that both you and your dogs are happy. I also do overnight, weekend and vacation time pet sitting.

I've grownup around dogs all my life. I have done anything from training to walking. I offer big dogs to small dogs.

About

Hello there! My name is Alyssa and I am a professional dog trainer. I currently work at a dog training facility. At this facility I train and rehabilitate dogs. I have trained dogs with all different temperaments and behavior issues (fear aggression, dog aggression, agression towards humans, separation anxiety). That being said, no dog is too much for me! Other than my work life, I love to hangout with my pup and go for hikes. I am currently enrolled in the criminal justice program at my college and hope that one day I can work for a federal agency or with the police K-9 unit. With my services, I will be able to do obedience training for an hour a day with your pup as I am caring for him/her. Your dog will also experience some awesome hiking trips! If you would like to know more about me or my services, just ask! I have plenty of references from clients that I would be happy to provide!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
