Gary & Jen were wonderful! They identified & fixed my outside gate. Two previous handyman told me nothing could be done with my warped gate. It was over 100 outside & I offered them choice of coming another day to finish up but they both stayed & completed the outside work. Not sure how they managed to handle the heat! I will be calling Gary & Jen for all future needs at my home!!!

Mike Levy (S.H.N. LLC) did an outstanding job in enclosing an arched doorway connecting two rooms in my house. Mike came out to my house on a Tuesday night and provided me with a reasonable estimate to complete this project. He was also available to start this job on Thursday, which coincided with me having another contractor do a different job at my house, saving me time away from my job. Due to imperfections by the original builder, the two sides of the arched doorway were not in close alignment once Mike framed the doorway. Mike's expertise in drywall work allowed him to fix this non-alignment issue once the sheet rock was hung so that you cannot even notice that a doorway once existed there. Mike was very professional and courteous, and completed the job as if it were his house. Mike arrived on time and finished on time. The entire job went very well and Mike took the time to explain how he would work around some of the imperfections so that the finished product would exceed my expectations. I will definitely hire Mike again for any small or large projects, and would highly recommend him for any drywall or handyman jobs.

John was everything that I was hoping for. He was able to do the handyman carpentry work that we needed. He installed some stair railing's and put in some doorframes and installed baseboards. His price was extremely fair I felt like I more than got my moneys worth. I've never felt that I've gotten my moneys worth out of a contractor the way I have with him. I look forward to using him again.

Michelle painted the entire interior of our home in neutral colors and also provided handyman services for a door replacement and repairs to a basement ceiling. She and her crew were outstanding in the work they performed. I appreciated and trusted her attention to detail, adherence to schedule, and suggestions for colors. They worked tirelessly to deliver this project to us. Great job Michelle and Greg! I would highly recommend their services-you will not be disappointed in the finished product!

William did an outstanding job with vinyl siding work I needed to finish my garage heater installation. The job involved removing siding and replacing it with a custom-made Azek mounting block and j-channel around a 4" stainless steel vent pipe. I am very satisfied William's workmanship and would not hesitate to recommend him.

John was a pleasure to work with. His master carpenter, Dave was easy to work with and helped to repair a badly rotted screen porch. I hope to hire them to repair my roof this summer.

Joe did a good job on all the work he performed. He's very handy, capable of a variety of jobs that you would have to spend a lot more for hiring a plumber or electrician. Would hire again if he were not so busy.

You know it's crazy that when you read reviews and all the ratings were Five Stars then you read a review that seems to me like a vindictive person. To me it's like "Wow" I didn't have any issues with JDQ. I do realize that there are some control freaks out there that once you finally put a stop to all the belittling and complaining they have to some way shape or form try to destroy a good hard worker reputation. When I was calling around for a professional handyman and builder I was so out of my realm. I spoke with many different businesses, most left me feeling like I didn't know what I was talking about and crazy for some projects I wanted complete. I even had them come to my home and what a mistake that was. Stone-age coming back in full force! I was at my dentist and there was a JDQ business card, first thing I saw that made me comfortable was that Mr. Quintal is a veteran, then I called him and what a pleasure! Of course after the last companies I spoke to I was gun shy to ask for what I want completed. Mr. Quintal suggested that he should come to my home and have me walk him through all the projects I would like to have completed. When he pulled in my driveway, about 15 minutes early, he had A tape measure, pencils and crazy builder paper. He walked me through all the steps that he would have to do to complete my projects, never leaving anything out. He didn't make me feel like I was a moron and he was very respectful. When we walk through some of the steps for the project the suggestions that he had were brilliant! I would have never of thought of it, and deftly didn't see it on Pinterest. I felt so comfortable with JDQ that once we agreed on which product to start first I let Mr. Quintal have a free-for-all to add any ideas that he seemed to fit. Before any adjustments were needed he would run it by me first and try to find the best bargain for the supplies. He is definitely the best woodworker/builder besides my father and that setting the bar pretty high! So thank you Mr. Quintal for fitting me in while you were working with that crazy lady, your full calendar and making my project dreams come true and even better that I first imagined. Now when I have company over to my house I get so many compliments on the work completed it makes me gitty and want more completed. I genuinely feel that JDQ is worth every cent I paid him. Everybody out there before you call anybody else call Mr. Quintal and I can guarantee you will not be disappointed. So thank you JDQ for all your hard work and sweat poured into my home. Your forever future customer sincerely, PIC! Happy Veteran's Day!

I consider myself a very knowledgable DIY home owner. I have been completing home repair / vehicle maintenance for myself and family / friends since my childhood; however, I need advice on how to complete a project (more often than i like to admit) that requires a level of knowledge that I DONT have. That's where Dave at Quality Finish LLC comes in. I have known Dave for years now. He has a level of expertise in his craft that I can only dream of for myself. Furthermore, his "craft" is so incredibly diverse that it puts every other handyman I've worked with to shame. Dave has had the perfect answer for every "project stopping" issue I have ever sought his counsel on. Every time I have seen the finished product of Dave's work throughout the years I am in awe of the quality and care taken to make sure his results stand above the rest. So, if you are looking for an experienced professional who will complete any project needs you have with impecable attention to detail and flawless results; look no further than Dave and Quality Finish LLC! You will be very glad you did (I know I always am!).

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
