In my absence, Patte cared for my beloved 21 year old cat. She came to my house 2x/day and had to give him fluids every other day which she did with expert care. She spent a lot of time with him and gave me daily reports & photos on how he was doing. Patte is a genuine animal lover who has had a lot of experience caring for dogs & cats and other pets. She is a very caring person and I trust her completely with my animal companions. She is simply the "Best"!

MacKenzie did a wonderful job. Not only did she care for our cats, but she left everything neat and clean and brought in our mail and packages. She also gave me text updates on how the cats were doing. I’ll definitely be using MacKenzie for all our pet sitting needs.

Shayna is the consummate professional. Besides loving and caring for our dog, who believe me, is not easy, she thought to ask everything before accepting the assignment. I'm pretty sure my dog would rather live with her. She updates you while you're away, she asked about watering plants and taking in mail, she loves your pet like you do, and she is the sweetest, most patient, thorough worker I know. You won't be sorry you hired her.

Karen is wonderful with my dog! Usually after the initial meet & greet I prefer to be at the first few visits until I know my dog and the pet sitter are comfortable with each other. But my dog took yo Karen immediately and I was able to skip that step very comfortably. My dog fell in love with her instantly, and he is usually a very cautious dog. And as dog lovers know, we can trust their instincts. Karen has been so flexible and goes above & beyond. I'm so grateful I found her!

In July we became the new owners of a 2 year old pitbull named Isis, she had no training what so ever! Walking her impossible, she popped 3 vines in my hands the first week alone. Isis would catapult off each person she met as a "greeting". If another dog approached it was game over she would drag us to wherever she wanted to go despite our protests. Fortunately she is nothing but a love bug and not aggressive at all. We felt we had made a mistake and would have re-homed her if Joe had not come into our lives. Joe made it possible to keep Isis in our home and we have made huge improvements in a short period of time! Joe GETS dogs and he knows how to assist people in the proper training of their pets. I can walk by any situation confident that I can handle my dog, my 71 yr old roommate has started to walk her now which was not possible before Joe! Thank You Joe!!!!

Jocelyn, owner of JW Pet Care, has been working with our family since the week we brought our Labrador puppy home. The thought of leaving our “baby” with anyone else, especially a person who we did not know, seemed unbearable at the time. When we first met Jocelyn, we were immediately impressed with her strong knowledge base, impressive experience, and most importantly, her comfort level and warm, natural interaction with our dog. Jocelyn’s innate love for animals shined through immediately, which really calmed our nerves! Jocelyn has consistently provided great care. She arrives within the requested time frame, feeds, plays with, and loves our dog! Each time she visits, she sends at least one, but often several, photo or video updates. What a comfort it is to know that while we are at work, our dog is receiving so much attention and TLC. As a business owner, Jocelyn is responsive, professional, understanding, and fair. I appreciate her flexibility and willingness to work with our constantly changing schedules. I have never felt like this is just a business to Jocelyn; this is her passion. We feel blessed to have found her.

I've said for years that if there is such a thing as an after-life, I want to come back as one of Jen's beloved pets. She has cared for mine off and on for 14 years (cats and dogs) and I'm certain they love her more than they love me! Jen is thoughtful, decisive and very reliable. Her attention to detail is flawless and she is gifted in her ability to connect with pets of all types, esp. cats, dogs and horses. I'd be glad to respond to any unique queries at PatTCakes@aol.com. Please reference this Review in the subject line of your message. In the meantime, don't delay ~ contact Jen NOW to get on her schedule for a weekend away or your summer vacation. PS. She waters plants and sorts the mail, too. You going to love her!

Jen has been sitting for our 2 (now 3 cats) since we moved to Fairfeld in 2008. She is always available, extremely dependable and you can see that she loves cats. Our cats love her, one comes over and rolls on her back every time Jen comes in. We love Jen as we view her as a friend not out cat sitter.

I found Alison through Thumvtack back in May to walk my bulldog each weekday. I couldn't be happier with how it has worked out. It was a big transition for my dog and Alison made him comfortable much quicker than I expected. She is open to all suggestions and has even given me regular updates on their walks. I highly recommend Alison! Jim

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a dog walker do?

We all know our dogs love going on long, adventure-filled walks, but jobs and family and commuting can make it difficult to give them the leash time they deserve. You can hire a professional dog walker to make sure your furry friend gets adequate exercise and outdoor time each day. A professional dog walker may be an individual contractor or work for a dedicated dog-walking company. In either case, you want to make sure the pro has the appropriate insurance in case of an emergency. Some people opt to give the dog walker a key to their house; others to have them pick up the dog from the yard. Dog walking can happen as often as multiple times per day, or just a few times a month as needed. Here are some questions to ask when you are interviewing a new dog walker:

  • Will you or someone else be walking my dog?
  • Do you have a backup plan if you can’t make it for a scheduled walk?
  • Will you walk my dog by itself, or do you walk several dogs at once?
  • What are your different walk routes?
  • When will you pick up and drop off?
  • How will we communicate?
  • Do I have to commit to a schedule or are you flexible?
  • What’s your cancellation policy?
  • What’s your response plan if my dog gets injured or becomes sick?
  • How and how often do I pay you?
  • Do you offer package pricing if I buy multiple dog walks up front?

How much do dog walkers charge?

The cost of dog walking depends on several factors including length and frequency of dog walks, the number of dogs on the walk, distance to your house, and any additional services you request. The national average cost range for a dog walk is $10-$20, but that price will vary based on where you live in the country and the regional cost of living and doing business.

The longer the dog walk, the higher your costs will be. Dog walkers offer a range of walk lengths, from 15-minute potty breaks to long hikes of 120 minutes or more. For example, a dog walker may charge $15 for a 15-minute walk and $35 for a 35-minute walk. Requesting that your dog be the only animal on the walk will typically mean a higher cost than if you permit your dog to be walked in a pack of dogs. You may be able to get a discounted rate if you have more than one dog to be walked. For example, a professional dog walker may charge $28 for one dog or $33 for two dogs on a 60-minute walk. If you need additional help — like feeding the dogs or giving them medication — dog walkers may be able to provide this service at an additional fee. Dog walkers may charge higher rates for walking your dogs on holidays.

How much does it cost to hire a house sitter?

House-sitting can be a lifesaver when you’re leaving town for any length of time. Whether you work remotely, you’re taking a much-needed vacation, or you just want to road-trip for a few days, it’s wise to have a pro keep an eye on your house and pets while you’re gone. Your home is more likely to stay safe and you won’t have to wrangle the kitty into a kennel to travel with you. The national average pet-sitting price ranges between $20 and $30. Pet-sitting and house-sitting costs will vary based on where you live in the country and regional labor rates. Another factor in cost is how long you want the house-sitter to stay. Some people prefer to have the house-sitter stay the night at their house, perhaps to care for an elderly pet or simply to keep a watchful eye on the home at all times. Overnight stays will cost more, ranging anywhere from $50 to $100, depending on services provided. For day visits, house-sitting and pet-sitting prices will increase incrementally the longer the visit and the more service you want performed. For example, a quick 10-minute visit to feed and walk the pet and bring in the mail could be $12.50, a 25-minute visit could be $18, a 40-minute visit $25, and a 50-minute visit $32. How much should you pay for a pet sitter?

Pet sitting provides your precious pet with in-home care. A pet-sitter can make a brief visit during the day to provide snacks, playtime or affection, or stay at your house for one or more nights to tend to your pet. Prices for pet-sitting will vary based on length of the visit. Nationally, pet sitting prices range from $20 to $30, although prices run higher for your sitter to stay the night. Prices will also be affected by where you live in the country. Here are some examples of average pet-sitting prices based on length of time and region:

  • 30-minute visit: $17 in a small Texas town.
  • 30-minute visit: $25 in Southern California.
    • 45-minute visit: $28.
    • 60-minute visit: $32.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $50 in Texas.
  • Overnight stay (10 hours): $85 in Southern California.
    • 12 hours: $100.
    • 24 hours: $200. This is a good option for a sick, elderly or brand-new pet that needs constant supervision.
