From the start there were issues with the project manager Jeff showing up and communicating about delays in the initial visit to my home to discuss the original project I had posted on Thumbtack for painting living room, indicating that I would need the painting services to help me move everything in the room to do the work, and when Jeff did make it to meet he visually surveyed and measured all spaces and confirmed that he and his team would be able to move the physical contents of the spaces and estimated that the living room project would take two weeks to complete. Jeff took longer to get me the price quotes for the living room, stairwell, two bedroom closets, and bathroom projects, we discussed during his visit and then pressured me to sign the pricing agreements to begin the work before discussing pricing for additional coat closet and front and back door projects I had asked him to add on after he sent the pricing for the projects discussed during his visit. I ended up signing the pricing agreements to allow him to start the painting and gave him the deposit requested for one third of the work ($9,915) in good faith. Subsequently signed change order for closet build-up and light, front and back doors. Six weeks into the painting and other work in the living room and painting of stairwell walls, Jeff again applied pressure to move onto the master bedroom closet (which may have made sense because it involved the stairwell landing area), except that the living room was still in disarray, with half of the contents being stored in my dining room and leaving me and my two adult sons to use the master bedroom as our only family space. I suggested that they do the closet in my son's bedroom first but then they decided they wanted to do the downstairs bathroom (added on with a separate pricing agreement which I did not end up signing) and then pressured me to start the upstairs/main bathroom, before finishing ANY of the projects that they had started and leaving me and my sons in a home that is one third inhabitable. Whenever I emphasized the need to finish the living first so they could move the stuff stored in the dining room back into the living room before they open up a new work zone and I could feel confident that I would not be left with several unfinished projects at the end of their work in my home, they refused, saying "it's almost done" before doing a few more things in the unfinished projects that continued to need more work done even after continued work on them. In the end they stopped all work saying they needed to move onto their next project to feed their families, despite my having overpaid them for the work they actually did perform (to the tune of almost $4k), still without finishing anything except for the installation of the back door and with many mishaps along the way, including dumping of the demo trash on my back porch until I asked them to remove three weeks afterwards. When I asked them to refund the overpayment for the work they didn't do they came back saying that the deposit I paid was allocated to each of the projects priced out and offered the project-based allocations despite not having specified anything about how they would apply the deposit in the original pricing agreement or at anytime before I requested a refund of a portion of the monies paid for work not performed. At this point, Jeff told me he wasn't the owner, Junior (the onsite worker) was, and when I questioned why he didn't make me aware of that before and spoke like it was his team, he was adamant about his "agreement with Junior has nothing to do with this" and asserted he (Jeff) is the supervisor and in charge of the job. Before this I was just told that Jeff translates for Junior. Now almost 14 weeks later, they refuse to return to finish the painting, sanding and refinishing of stairs, finishing poor painting of worker who Junior told me was "a beginner" and didn't cover the old color on the walls, cleaning up of the spaces they started, including leaving behind four empty paint cans, furniture left in place, covered with debris from their work and stacked on top of each other, still half in the dining room, light switch plates off and when I tried to put back on they don't fit, paint job that looks like it was done by do-it-yourselfer and insistence they are not responsible for anything. Agreed to pay me $2k of the almost $4k overpaid in four payments. Junior continues to insist that they need to adjust the pricing for moving around the room contents despite it having been specified in the original Thumbtack request form that this work was needed and Jeff's confirmation that they could do. Of course, given their track record of not doing things on time or even in reasonable time frames, I am doubtful that they would live up to their word about this either. From the start I tried to work with them according to their terms which included leaving them a credit card to pay for the supplies (which they never itemized or explained and when I questioned why there were three types of white paint for trim Jeff said one was purchased in error and Junior said it couldn't be returned but never reimbursed me for the paint they bought in error). All I asked is for them to complete one job/living space before starting a new space/project, but they refused and had I agreed to move forward on the many other projects I had hoped to have them complete, I would now have no undemolished living space in which to live, given their track record in my home.
