Kathy was great from the get-go. I had a specific need for my son who was looking for a very focused, efficient and personalized SAT tutor to try and improve upon an already pretty good score. I had an extensive phone call with Kathy (free) and she provided a ton of useful information. We set up a compressed tutoring schedule to get what he needed in in the time he had before the test (less than three weeks!). No results yet, but my son loved working with her and felt the time was very well spent. From my perspective she was very prompt, professional and provided exactly what we discussed on the initial call. Highly recommend!

My son is a 15 year old in Honors Algebra II at Worcester Academy. He never had much trouble with math in the past, but this class was challenging him and his grades were slipping. Oliver really helped him to fill in the missing parts of his understanding and to feel more confident. My son really liked Oliver's approach and enjoyed his tutoring sessions, and his grades improved significantly. Oliver is very easy to work with as a parent-- he is responsive to calls and messages, understanding about schedule changes, and is very generous with his time-- we scheduled for an hour, but Oliver often stayed longer when he was really engaged in his teaching. I would definitely hire Oliver again for my kids.

I recently ran across a review about Quantum Prep and felt like I just had to share my tutoring story as well. I graduated from Lexington High School in Lexington Massachusetts. Lexington High School is a huge school. When I say huge, I mean I graduated with five hundred and eleven classmates. I was always proud to go to Lexington High, we were rated number 19 in 2014 by Newsweek in their “America’s Top Public Schools.” Luckily my class sizes were always small and it was not too hard to get help from the teacher. The first semester of my junior year I was taking five classes. I was looking into pre-med, so I took a lot of hard science classes that gave me at least two hours of homework a night. I also worked on the weekends, swam competitively, played in the jazz band and was active in my religious youth group. That year I was taking AP Chemistry as a challenge and knew I was going to have a tough time with it. My teacher, Mrs. Compton, was great! She explained everything really well and broke it down for the class. I just really couldn’t get everything in my notebook and in my head with enough time to move on to the next topic, so I’d lose information here and there, making it really hard to answer test questions. I got the first F in my entire academic career on the first quiz. I’m one of those people who expect a lot from themselves, and I expected A’s. I felt really bad about myself for the first two quizzes because I wasn’t coming even close to what I knew I could do. In addition, because I was spending so much time working on AP Chemistry, my other classes were suffering. And as a prospective pre-med student, I was afraid that because I challenged myself I wasn’t going to get into the colleges I wanted. That's when I called Quantum Prep for help. As soon as I had the first tutoring session I felt a little more reassured. We went over my quizzes and homework assignments and my tutor quickly picked up what I was missing and how to keep me focused. I felt much more confident walking into class every day. My tutor figured out how I best learn and we started laughing and making jokes as we did “stereochemistry”. Yes, he figured out within one session that I learn better with music playing in the background and even knew why! The real difference was that he didn’t just teach me material, he taught me how to learn for myself. It was a game-changer in how I approached school and learning in general. So while he was teaching me one class, I was using the learning techniques he taught me to improve my grades in all of my classes. He even patiently sat through temper tantrums and low points. So what happened after I called Quantum Prep? The next quiz I took, I got thirty points higher than the last. The first exam; I got a B+. I went on to graduate in a science heavy degree, and got into my first choice for college and graduated with a degree in Neuropsychology. I highly suggest using Quantum Prep for any kind of tutoring. I had such a wonderful experience and have used the lessons I learned from him in so many different aspects of my life, from studying at the university to job experiences. Thank you Quantum Prep!

Mike Donn was an effective and valuable volunteer tutor in the Workforce Readiness program at United South End Settlements for a little over two years. Mr. Donn assisted both Pre-GED and GED level students in math. He bonded well with studeents and held them accountable. Students were eager to work with him and showed marked improvement in conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and the ability to apply what they had learned. Perhaps most important was his ability to boost students' confidence in their skills and in themselves. In addition, Mr. Donn also delivered several well received Financial Literacy workshops for students, and one summer he lead a tutorial drop-in for our lowest level students. During his time volunteering at USES, I considered Mr. Donn to be a valuable asset. David Lowe Math Teacher United South End Settlements

Ihab is quite possibly the best math tutor I have ever had. He is enthusiastic, encouraging, and sharp. He is able to adjust his teaching style to fit the learning style of the student. His years of experience allow him to teach his students material in a way most tutors are unable to. 5 stars.

We hired Micheline after my daughter took her initial SAT and ACT test as we felt she could do better with the input of an expert. After two months of consistent tutoring, my daughter again took the tests and her scores improved dramatically. She liked Micheline, and we were happy with her professionalism. Micheline is also very patient. When my son needed help with Spanish, we called Micheline. My son enjoyed & looked forward to his lessons, learned to love Spanish, and made a lot of progress. We would highly recommend her!

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

When should you start preparing for the SAT?

It’s never too early to start preparing for college entrance exams, but professional tutors recommend a baseline of at least three months before the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is the gold standard for college admissions, and SAT prep is important for doing well. Your child’s SAT scores will have a major effect on which colleges send acceptance letters. Professional tutors can work with your kids to coach them on how to take the SAT, as well as studying the actual academic content. Doing well on the SAT is as much about knowing the right test-taking strategies as about having a firm grasp of the subject matter.

To understand your student’s readiness for the SAT, they can take the pre-SAT (PSAT) starting in their sophomore year. SAT prep can be structured around the student’s PSAT scores, so tutors can address any challenges and weak subject areas. If your child has their sights set on an Ivy League or elite school, SAT prep with a tutor or study program should start at least six months before the test. Vocabulary is a key element of the student’s SAT preparation and success. The national average rate for SAT prep tutoring is $70 per hour.

What is in the SAT test?

As your child is preparing for the SAT, it’s helpful to know the specifics of the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is made up of three main categories and one optional essay. Students have a total of three hours to take the test, with an additional 50 minutes for the optional essay. In total, there are 154 questions. During SAT prep, it’s helpful to take timed practice exams to understand how you’ll do during the actual test. Here is a brief overview of each of the four categories:

      • Reading: 65 minutes with 52 questions. The Reading test measures command of evidence, words in context, analysis in history and social studies, and analysis in science.
      • Writing and Language: 35 minutes with 44 questions. The Writing and Language test covers the same topics as Reading, as well as expression of ideas and standard English conventions.
      • Math: 80 minutes with 58 questions. The Math test looks at the student’s understanding of algebra, problem-solving and data analysis, and advanced math in the context of fluency, conceptual understanding, and applications.
      • Essay (optional): 50 minutes with 1 essay. The essay will demonstrate the student’s competency with writing, analysis and reading.
