You Can’t Go Wrong With Such Great Work As a retiree, living on a fixed income and not being a professional in the building/construction trades it’s always a bit nerve-racking when faced with multiple issues to maintain your home investment. The Colonial portion of the homestead was built in 1750 and the addition is an authentic Post-N-Beam Revival making this a valuable property historically and culturally. With this type of property, quality cannot be compromised! I had six immediate responses to my request for roofing repairs initially. So, let’s talk about the ONE that got the job(s). L&K Construction gets five stars from me in every category. Wayne returned my initial call very quick. He showed up at my residence, surveyed the repair work needed and then promptly provided the explanation of the scope of the repairs. He also provided an estimate of the proposed job in a very professional manner. Now here is where the differences began to surface that separate the field. Wayne is very knowledgeable on all phases of construction from demo and rehab to new construction. As a roofer, Wayne was tasked with cleaning up shabby work of previous roofers. Previous work that was done poorly causing leakage and potentially costly damages to not only the exterior but the interior of the property. I was more than pleased with his work on this task and immediately expanded the scope of work and employed him with additional projects – cedar roofing and siding repairs. If your doing cedar you need to know what your doing! He was back on site within a few days! Having been in the property business I understood the value of a firm like L&K Construction managed by the generational experience of Wayne Lupien. Wayne was honest and candid in his explanations and his estimates. The jobs were excellent! The cleanup was excellent with no walk around problems. The price was fair and reasonable. As a matter of fact, L&K Construction will be coming back to do more work with not only roofing and siding but with masonary work. You can bet I will be informing my friends and acquaintances of the professional expertise of L&K Construction. So, if you are looking for professional work at a reasonable price with no sacrifice on quality to get that level of cost-to-benefit ratio, call Wayne at L&K Construction - you’ll be glad you did!

Working with Michelle was wonderful. As I had barely a notion of how I wanted the interior of our house painted, she came with an interior design, as well as professional painting background. Even when I was hesitant at a suggestion, she said "trust me," and it turned out great! Michelle sat down with me to go over different color schemes that would "flow" throughout the open first floor, with beautiful accent walls. She was responsive to my texts (I felt very comfortable leaving her alone at my home to paint as my husband and I were at work) and I felt we had good communication throughout the 5-day full house interior painting project. She had suggestions as to the "little things" that would highlight the rooms (things you could pick up from Home Goods, etc.) She even went so far, with my permission, to pick up curtains and other items and they were great additions — and I didn't have to do a thing except reimbursing her! She has a great eye for color and had suggestions that even my husband complimented her on. (A great darker color in our bathroom turned out beautiful; who knew?) She works alone and with her fiance on the weekends and always has a goal of what she wants to get done during a particular day. Moving furniture was not a problem, as most of my furniture is on felt (hardwood floors) and easy to move. She even fixed things on the walls as she came across them. Her work was very good and a great value. Now that I have the "bug," I will be bringing her back to do some more interior work, including a chair rail in the dining room, a backsplash in the kitchen, a kitchen valance curtain, refinishing dining room chairs, and more. Between her fiance and her, there is nothing in your house they cannot do. I highly recommend her!

Charlie is a finish carpenter as well as a General Contractor with architectural design talent. Over the past 2 years, he has completely renovated a large gutted loft condo and our 3500 sq ft home in West Medford. People cannot say enough about the wonderful job that he and his small crew accomplished. Neither can we, because we know that some of the situations both homes presented were extremely difficult. He converted a high-end Poggenpohl kitchen to fit the space in our condo, & the whole condo is done in granite and marble, including floors, and full of subtle amenities. And the upgrades he made to our Medford house caused it to sell at a great price right away. He can do anything with wood - did I say that before?? The cherry medicine and bathrrom cabinets & Jacuzzi surround are just gorgeous, and once done, we had to be pried from our house. And on top of that, he is a first class guy - you'll love him, as we did.

We hired Mr Harlow to add a bathroom and laundry room. One of the most unexpected qualities was his guidance and suggestions on things that we had not thought of. His workmanship was high quality, and we ended up with a first class addition to our home. I like the fact that he came when he said he would, and we were very comfortable with his being in our home when we could not be at home. He is highly skilled and self directed. We would not hesitate to hire Mr Harlow again. Sherry

I can't say enough about Maureen and her team! We recently sold our home and MLT Design Group was there for us through the whole process, They made great suggestions about what we needed to do to get our home in the best possible shape to sell it for the best price. They did excellent work and by the time they were finished we didn't want to leave!! They were professional, punctual, and went above and beyond throughout the job. Our 20 year old home looked brand new and when Maureen and her team finished staging it we couldn't believe the transformation. I highly recommend them!

Dianna's artistic skills brought my rooms to life! The walls became bright and welcoming. Rugs of cheerful color shades, comfortable chairs sporting attractive coverings complemented the very suitable sofa. Rounding out for a finishing touch are charming lamps and end tables. A narrow dining room space offered Dianna the challenge of selecting an attractive useful shelving unit. To tie this together she selected handsome chairs with custom fabric at a space-saving table that can expand to seat eight allowing plenty of elbow room. The area became a spectacular arrangement with the additional of a beautiful window cornice that coordinates with colors in the room. Dianna's friendly personalty and eagerness to please the customer makes working with her a pleasure. Dianna takes time to learn the preferences of the home owner and offers options to suit the budget and personal preferences. When a customer wishes to consult her Dianna responds quickly. It was a most happy experience to have Dianna as my designer. Because of her guidance my home is a very pleasant place to be!

Our project consisted of a full interior drywall, prime walls and paint ceilings. The house is an old colonial style with lots of "character" and Ryan and his crew did an outstanding job. They were fast but did not skimp on quality. They were on time and on budget. I will hire BullBear again and again.

Barbara and I had about 30 mins. discussion which went very well. We did not meet as I was able to get my window treatments done through a referral from a friend and I decided on them with 1 appointment.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
