Jason was wonderful, he responded to my request quickly and was able to repair my faucet the same day. He arrived on time and even cleaned up afterwards. All professional handymen should be like him, a real gem.

Rick is awesome. He came over and just helped work through a whole bunch of custom problems that I needed taken care of. He also creatively helped me with an Ikea hack that made my desk way more useful and better looking. Will be calling on him again shortly. He was on time, polite, neat and reasonably priced.

Working with Jim was a great experience. He was very communicative and responsive and went out of his way to do a great job on custom shelving we wanted made. The work product was awesome. He also just seemed like a good guy and was a pleasure to deal with. We hope to have another reason to work with Jim again.

Cleaned a carpet, stair runner, and set of furniture. They were able to come that day. Rob was pleasant and helpful on the phone. Just have an old towel on hand for the worker to stand on to catch the water. Wish I had known that a head of time. Overall happy with the service. Recommended them to my friend and they went right to her condo after my house. She was happy too.

Arturo reupholstery two chairs for out living room, of course we were not sure if we should just get new chairs or have a slipcover, Arturo suggested we reupholstery them, and since my husband found the chairs really comfortable we deceided to make the plunge, we covered them in a stripped fabric and he did it perfectly, the stripes matched and the matching chairs look beautiful in their custom fabrics they are truly beautiful, Arturo did a superior job, we get a lot of compliments on them we found him prompt and professional

My experience with contractors, including this company, is that you have to have patience. When a job has multiple areas of concentration (electrical, plumbing, carpentry, etc.), there may be different people doing each service; which means that everything is dependent upon each person doing their service in a timely manner, otherwise possible delays. Also, most contractors have multiple job sites where their people are rotated where needed. Since no one can predict a problem will occur, this also causes delays in getting a project completed. All of this is the nature of the job. As I mentioned before, try to have patience. Renovation projects can be frustrating and sometimes upsetting; but if everything is done correctly with minimal errors, the most important thing is that you are happy with the skills provided and the quality of the work completed.

I would highly recommend Albert's Flooring! Albert is very detail oriented and knowledgeable. He came out to our house twice to address our questions and concerns prior to the job. On the day of install, he arrived on time and carefully moved some heavy furniture. He truly wants to make the customer happy. Our new wood floor looks beautiful!

Wayne and his crew spent weeks at our new house working on renovations. We started by hiring them for a simple paint job (and by simple I mean the interior of an entire 2,400 square foot house). We were so thrilled with the work that had been done that we hired Wayne for other renovations - floor installation, kitchen backsplash installation, and picture frame molding installation in the dining room.

Dave McCann built our home in Wall Twp. The project took about four months from start to finish. Dave was always available for questions and his work is inpeccable. Dave did the work within our budget. When the home was finished, there were no surprise bills. His attention to detail makes him a true craftsman. A friend of ours is a custom builder in Bergen County. While down the shore on vacation he stopped by to look at how the construction was going. After about an hour of hearing how well constructed and neat the job was he told us that he was glad that Dave didn't do work in North Jersey. Anyone we have recommended Dave to over the years has been very satisfied.

Got a brand new roof installed, it looks very nice and was done quickly (took just 2 days). The workers who did the roof were nice guys and worked very hard in tremendous heat. I have no complaints about the work done. However, the manager Edison... that is a different story. I am not going to leave a bad review ONLY because I feel bad for the workers and don't want them to lose their source of income by not being hired again. It is not their fault that they have a horrible boss. Edison truly needs to re-think his interaction with customers and maybe take some courses on effective communication, responsiveness, anger management, and honesty. When I originally wrote this review in Word, it was about 2.5 pages, but I decided to be the bigger person and just let it go. Edison - I wish you the best of luck, and I hope you can treat future customers better than you treated me.

Mario was the project manager for the gut renovation of my townhouse. He is very professional, manages his own staff and subcontractors well and is a skilled carpenter. He is always considerate and does whatever is necessary to make sure the job is done correctly. I highly recommend him. Jane Sanders, Architect

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.
