Mark does fantastic work. He made my 20+ yr old deck look like new again! He replaced all the floor boards, removed a rotting bench, replaced all the handrail/top caps and reinforced all railings around the deck. Mark and his assistant, Jackie, worked well together and left my yard/patio cleaner than when they arrived. Really nice people, exceptional quality work and reasonably priced. 😀

Rick was called after getting really good reviews by a neighbor. Our front porch and brick wall needed to be rebuilt and Rick came out gave an estimate well under a competitors estimate(which was a couple years old) and completed the job on time. The job site was left in better shape than when he began and my porch/wall looks brand new. I saved so much money working with Rick that I gave him other jobs that were being put off for years. After Rick completed the work, I was able to sell my house in under 7 days. The satisfaction with Rick’s work has not gone unnoticed and I regular see him at most of the neighbor’s houses.

Steve was great! He was helping us hang a porch swing and let us know he would be out on a Saturday (less than a week from when we first connected) then he got back to us and was able to come out a day sooner. Our porch ceiling gave us all some trouble and Steve offered several alternative work around solutions to make sure we were able to get our swing hung without damaging our siding or any of the porch. He made us feel 100% confident in his ability and he was so knowledgable about so many things! We plan to work with him again on various other projects in the future and have already recommended him to others.

I called Luis with Gonzalez Contrator to replace a leaning pillar on my 93 year old aunts porch in Philadelphia. He sent me an estimate and went out a few days later and completed the project. He was very professional and knowledgeable and kept me informed along the way. I live in Washington State so I needed someone I could trust to get the job done without me being there and Luis did just that. His work was excellent. I look forward to doing business with him again in the new future.

I hired Burgese Co. to install a new deck in my yard. I gave Eric an idea on what I wanted, and he listened and came up with something better. The deck turned out beautiful. Eric is a professional and I can tell he really cares about his work. He treated the job like he was building it for himself and the work shows. I highly recommend Burgese Co and will use them in the future!

Replace a deck in our summer place. EBR did a very good job in quickly replacing the old deck which was damaged by Sandy and installing a door to the crawling space. The job was done very well and within the estimated cost.

Zaren and his crew were amazing. They power washed my home, deck, porch and driveway. They did repairs on gutters and rainpipes. Fixed a board in the deck that we didn't think could be repaired. While they were there they gave me a quote for removing overgrown shrubs in the front of my house. We were happy with the quote. The work turned out so well. They were professional, courteous and so helpful. They cleaned up when they were finished. Would recommend them for home projects that you may have. Their prices were more than fair.

Mark, The Builder, did a terrific job replacing rotted wood and a post on our front porch. He worked efficiently and it is obvious he is an expert carpenter. He finised the work by painting the installed wood and leaving the work area completely clean. We would recommend Mark for any project and we have already called him for a second job in our home. Justin remodeled our kitchen and built an outdoor deck out from the kitchen. Challenges of an old home included the 75-year-old uneven flooring and tight space. He designed and built the perfect solution to our needs. The whole project was a pleasure for us: we could trust him to carry it out while we were out of town, to return for tweaking and changes until we were satisfied. Anyone hiring B.U.I.L.D can look forward to fine workmanship, a great finished product, and a good overall experience. We cannot recommend a better general contractor in the area (and we had tried others!).

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
