We needed two water heaters replaced in a very tight space, a project where we would either be charged an exorbitant amount or probably have it be completed poorly. Kathy was incredible--patient, informative, and made sure we were comfortable moving forward after helping us explore all options. Sam was very transparent about the possible issues that could arise, and executed everything perfectly with Jordan(?) helping out. They had to drain and remove all three which was very difficult, but there were no complaints. Sam even changed out the valves that were in terrible condition and adjusted the vents to the proper pitch at no extra charge. We were also relieved that he took an additional, unplanned job as a unit's sink and toilet were leaking. Overall they did a fantastic job and were very professional. Loved working with them, and will hire for future projects.

Joseph was great to work with. He installed my AC unit and made sure the vent was as exposed as possible because I have a counter that blocks part of it. He is friendly, easy to reach and easy to work with. Thanks!

I have a very good experience with this company. And really impressed with a results. They me explained me the process before start. Made a picture before/after. My system is very old and hasn't been cleaned in 15 years. Blower, cooling coils and all the vents looked very bed. Technician cleaned everything very thorough for almost 3 hours. Job is very well done and air feels so much lighter inside now. Highly recommended company.

He came well equipped with the specific tools needed and the "know how" for the job requested- (Air dryer vent/hook up/clean out) and even offered options to meet our needs and budget. I will certainly be calling him again in the future and highly recommend.

I messaged Fred's Chimney Magic through Thumbtack for an estimate to clean my dryer vent. I had no idea if my dryer vent was blocked with lint, but I wanted to be sure there wasn't a problem. Dryer vents can become clogged and cause a fire if they are not regularly maintained. Annette contacted me within minutes and I was able to schedule a free estimate. Chris and Dan showed up in a commercial van and were upfront about the $89 flat fee to clean the vent. However, before I agreed to have them do the work, they did an inspection of the vent to see how blocked it was. They used their tools and pulled out a substantial amount of lint from the exterior vent. I knew I needed to have this work done, so I accepted the fee and they did the work. About 40 mins and a shopping bagful of dryer lint later, they were done. I have peace of mind knowing that my vent is clean and safe and I'll be sure to call Fred's Chimney Magic again! If you are trying to figure out if you should get this work done, don't waste another minute. Call them.

Replace bathroom tile, renovate bathroom, build new closet, replace kitchen sink/faucets/counter, replace radiator, install recessed lighting. Working with Ariel was a pleasure. Jacob and Joseph understood the work completely, had great advice on the design of my small Manhattan studio. They started on time every day were easy to communicate with and were fairly priced. I would def recommend them to friends and family.

I can't say enough about this company. Absolutely AMAZING. I had an issue with our central air unit and was quoted double by another major company in the area who wasn't even as detailed in there work. Was even told by the other company that the furnace and pump for the ac should be replaced as well as the duct work having to be cleaned. Crown Cooling came out and took care of the problem and even detected a gas leak in the furnace and even showed me where it was with something that was put on the connection to determine the leak. Needless to say they fixed my ac at a reasonable price and were knowledgable and professional. So happy I found a professional and honest company. Would highly recommend them. Not out to rip the customer off. What a pleasure for a change.

Enyl was professional from start to finish. We had him add an A/C vent in a high space and he was careful not to damage anything. He scheduled us quickly, and showed up on time. I had a positive experience and would gladly recommend him for installing additional A/C vents/duct work.

We recently had our air ducts cleaned in our house. They honored the price that they quoted on the phone, which was great in my opinion. Many times before this hasn't been the case with other companies that we've dealt with before. The workers were on time, very professional and did a wonderful job on our air ducts. We will definitely use them again, I highly recommend!!

The ducts are very well cleaned. There are a total of three people and they worked as a team. They carefully discussed on each duct and cleaned them meticulously. Patrick served as a supervisor and made sure nothing was left behind. Been here for 2 hrs. Very satisfied.

He came out super quick to provide a free quote (same day), and was thorough regarding different options for solving our dryer vent issue. Costs were clearly laid out, and he contacted the town regarding permits needed for the one option that might require them prior to us making a decision. I will happily go them for future jobs, too.

Orlando of Chute Master Environmental was very pleasant and helpful. He sent a technician prior to do the work to find out what the job was and what needed to be done. The technician came to look at the job and to give us an estimate. A week later the technician came ready to do the job. He was also pleasant and knew what was he doing. The air conditioning return duct passages are now clean. The technician was very careful to cover the floor and did not leave any mess or dust at all. Both times the technician was exact on time. If I know of anyone needing this type of work, I will recommend Orlando and Chute Master Environmental.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

How much does it cost to replace air ducts in a house?

If your air ducts have been damaged, you’ll need to replace them. The national average air duct replacement cost is $150-$280, which may not include materials. Factors such as duct material, labor, location of ducts and linear feet of ductwork will all affect your final costs. Labor costs will vary based on how accessible the ducts are and what material your ducts are made of. The least expensive duct material is a flexible, non-metallic ducting that costs approximately $1-$2 per linear foot. Flexible aluminum is generally more expensive and stronger than non-metallic ducting. Stainless steel ducting is the strongest, the least flexible (meaning installing it typically has higher labor rates), and usually the most expensive. An average price for air duct replacement could range between $35 and $55 per linear foot, including basic materials and labor. A typical single-family home has 6-10 duct runs; replacing or installing one duct run could average $150-$250 for labor.

How long does it take to get your ducts cleaned?

The amount of time air duct cleaning takes can depend on how extensive your duct system is, how old your air ducts are, and whether they have ever been cleaned. On average, expect a standard size home (between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet) to take 2-5 hours for one to two technicians to clean. Here are the proper protocol and equipment you should expect from a professional duct cleaning service, as recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency:

  • All doors and access ports opened to ensure the entire duct system is inspected and cleaned.
  • Thorough system inspection prior to cleaning to identify possible asbestos-containing materials. If asbestos is present, specially trained and equipped contractors must do the removal.
  • Use of approved vacuum equipment that exhausts particles outside of your house. If the vacuum exhausts inside your home, it must be HEPA equipment.
  • Furnishings and carpet covered and protected.
  • Soft-bristled brushes only on fiberglass duct board and sheet metal ducts internally lined with fiberglass.
  • Ductwork properly protected.
  • Adherence to guidelines and practices set down by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association.

How much does it cost to have your air ducts cleaned?

If you’re concerned about dust, allergens or mold, it may be time to have your air ducts cleaned. The national average cost for air duct cleaning ranges from $190 to $250. Air duct cleaning costs will vary based on a number of factors such as your location in the country, the age and condition of your air ducts, the number of linear feet to be cleaned, and any repairs your ducts may need. HVAC cleaning companies should clearly outline what is included in their services and at what rate, so always make sure you understand and have a written agreement before work begins. Here are some examples of average air duct cleaning costs:

  • Tiered pricing for different levels of service:
    • Standard cleaning: $100, which may include truck-mounted industrial vacuums, high-pressure air wands and air snakes to clean all supply and return vents, branch lines, and main trunk lines.
    • Advanced cleaning: $200, which may include standard cleaning services, plus rotobrush or viper clean sweep in the main trunk lines.
    • Ultimate cleaning: $400, which may include advanced cleaning, plus insertion of a viper microline into all vents to force debris down the branch lines and into the main trunk lines, to be handled by the viper clean sweep. Typically, all ductwork surface is contacted, before-and-after photos are provided, and the furnace is cleaned.
  • A flat rate for unlimited vents: $289.
  • Additional fees for larger houses: $20 for each additional 500 square feet over 2,500.
