I hired Upholstery Works to reupholster my 2 leather dinning room chairs. I wanted a change of color and fabric. I met Arturo to view samples of fabrics. Arturo came to me and was very professional, helpful and very responsive. The quality of work was excellent. I couldn’t believe how beautiful my chairs looked and how perfect the fabric looked. The chairs were dropped off in my house which was awesome and worked out with my busy schedule. I will definitely recommend this company. I thank Upholstery Works for making my chairs look beautiful and go so well with my new home decor.

My project was a gut renovation two bed, two bath coop apartment. I had a strict $60k budget, ninety-day window and clear idea of what I wanted to do with the space. I interviewed five Interior decorators and I am thankful I followed my intuition to hire Bridgette because she was a joy to work with. She helped me plan the space, source contractors, materials and was my shoulder to cry when I felt the renovation was over whelming. My project was completed on time and most importantly very close to my original projected Budget. Bridgette’s contribution played a pivotal role in my success and I plan to work with her again because her experience, creative insight and now friendship is invaluable.

I hired Holzman Interiors about 17 years ago when I first bought my home in New Canaan, Ct. She designed and furnished it completely with an update to the existing kitchen. It seemed only logical to call her back when we were ready to do a renovation to the kitchen. We came to her showroom which was a big help. There, you could combine all your needed selections under one roof. Julie is a remarkably talented interior designer who is a joy to work with. Her design aesthetic is absolutely superb. She is dedicated, focused, responsive and a great listen and communicator. She is an excellent partner and collaborator in projects of significance and complexity. We wouldn’t recommend or want to work with anyone else!

It is with much confidence that I highly recommend Darlene Cohen of Design Cache Interiors, to you for your decorating & interior design needs. Darlene worked with me to design my apartment in Trump Plaza, NYC, which was a challenging space in several areas, due to size. However, Darlene was able to come up with a great plan, layout, color scheme, which has made for a beautiful look that works perfectly! I would highly refer Darlene for any size home, office or apartment, as she certainly has a great eye and is on point - spot on in what I wanted my apartment to look & feel like. Leslie S.

I would highly recommend Marni for your interior decorating. I had a 300 sq ft apartment that needed everything and fast. She came out looked at it and measured everything out that same week. She had good ideas and listened to what I wanted and came up with different things for me to pick from. She was always there for me to talk to and was fast to get everything done. Everything is in the apartment in less than 3 weeks and looks great. I have worked with at least 5 other decorators on other homes in the past and have always run into some problems with them. I cannot tell you how easy and wonderful it was to work with Marni. I give her 6 stars out of 5!!

We worked with Angelika to decorate our offices in the financial district in lower Manhattan. We had both a tight timeframe and a tight budget. Angelika had a great vision for the space and quickly keyed in on the aesthetic we were looking for. She prepared the layout, selected furnishings and artwork, and implemented the design. She was responsive to all our requests along the way, reviewing options and following up with vendors. We are very happy with the final product – the space is great to work in and the overall look has the clean lines we were looking for. In addition, the project was completed on time and within budget .Angelika was a pleasure to deal with and made the process very easy for us. We would highly recommend her and would readily use her services again for an office or home design project. CWI

Really enjoyed working with Tanya. She had amazing style and was super patient with me even when I changed my mind several times. Great attention to detail and actually listens! She was able to stay well below budget and even had fantastic suggestions I never would have thought of. I live in NY so space is limited - Tanya was able to make the most out of my tiny place. I love coming home now and having guests over to show it off. So happy with everything. She’s is the best and is the beat when it comes to the latest trends. Very creative!

Jill provided a tremendous amount of help to me in articulating and defining my tastes and preferences. The biggest challenge was maintaining focus and making decisions as I was in the midst of a learning curve and didn't have a clear idea of what I wanted at the outset of the project. With respect to design and decorating, my horizons were truly broadened and I had such a great experience working with Jill. I came to appreciate styles and options I never would have considered on my own. I came to see the tremendous potential that existed in my apartment and became excited about the many other projects I can undertake one day. I appreciated the thoughtfulness, patience and design skill she demonstrated throughout the project.

I know Meryl from her beautiful work along the east coast. She has helped me with remodeling and designing my master bathroom, coordinating perfect paint colors for both the interior and exterior of my home, as well as helping me with space planning of all my furniture. I absolutely LOVE everything she has done in my home. I know many people in the area who have also used Meryl Stern Interiors in their homes, offices, and restaurants and her ability to create warm and beautiful spaces is truly a talent!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

  • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
  • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
    • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
  • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
    • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
  • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
  • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
