Blane was referred by a friend to help with purging and redefining our space after two rooms were free in my house. Blane truly has both vision and is also hands on. We emptied shelves, moved tables, got rid of a rug to open up the space. In three visits Blane found innovative ways of arranging furniture and artwork. We found a desk in one room that was not being used and moved it up to my newly created office. We also emptied a shelf to put in a newly created tv room. Blane is very aware of feng shui so that in my office he suggested I find a mirror so that although my back is facing the door when sitting at my desk, it is all cool now. In the first floor that was cluttered we cleared a cabinet filled with mail and replaced it with a glass bowl and later put up curtains. A very visually unaware friend noticed noticed the change as well as the curtains. On our most recent meeting we shopped for pillows and curtains and came back to the house to hang the curtains up. Blane finds innovative and aesthetic ways of arranging a room and clearing space. He also makes suggestions so that I went to the Container Store on my own and cleaned my dresser tops and rearranged my jewelry in boxes and containers so that now I know what I have. Blane is friendly and easy to work with, teaching you "how to fish" so that going forward I can utilize some of his vision and expertise on my own. I will call him back to work on my closets, but am going to clear some more space before then. Blane is truly a find. I am so happy that he came into my life.

I am a freelance interior designer, who has the pleasure of working with Carmella McDonald on several projects. I found that her discriminating eye, strong sense of color, and expertise in Feng Shuimade for an exciting design experience for our clients. Her tasks included providing two color and design concepts, flooring and fabric research, testing sofas, lighting and wall unit solutions, and providing estimates that worked within the different client's budgets. I was most impressed with her time management skills and her straightforward manner. Her energetic approach, hands on experience and versatile attributes make her an excellent candidate for any design project. Please feel free to contact me, either by email or phone. Ricky Becker

Judith Wendell is the person to go to for Feng Shui, decorating and design. She has helped me Feng Shui 3 separate apartments and if I ever do construction she is the first person I will call. Most recently she helped me with my current apartment with my husband and young baby. With the new baby I wanted to clear out any of the old energy. Plus something always felt off. The master bedroom felt claustrophobic even though it’s pretty sizeable room. By the time she left the apartment I felt like I could breathe for the first time in it. It felt lighter, like a huge weight was lifted. She cleared the space of old stagnant energy. Judith also made simple and inexpensive recommendations that made a huge shift in the apartment’s energy. My husband keeps saying how impressed he was with the recommendations Judith made. Her prices are reasonable and she will make suggestions to fit your budget. I recommend Judith to all my friends when they move.

I hired Aaron Lee Koch for my retail business. He totally got my design concept for the shop and ran with it. His recommendations resulted in a sales floor that is doing extremely well, and just as importantly evokes constant comments about how pleasing and comfortable the space is.

By integrating Feng Shui principles in the interior design process, I make sure that my clients' homes not only look professionally designed, but also function at their best. Everything, starting with the creativity of the process and the amazing people who invite me inside their homes and ending with the satisfaction of doing what I always knew I should.

The beautiful art of Feng Shui can assist you with many aspects of your life that seem to be difficult or missing. Could it be the personal romantic aspects of your life? Or, the career aspects of your life? Perhaps you just need better health or more money. Feng Shui has been known through simple placement and or re-placement of furniture and adjustments of color to bring a flow of harmony and ease to almost any environment. Many people have experienced the subtle, yet powerful effects Feng Shui has brought into their lives. Working with real estate for over 6 years, I have been inside of many homes. From mansions to basement apartments, I have seen the subtle changes Feng Shui can bring. As a Feng Shui consultant, I work to balance the elements within the home to enhance and bring intention to that which concerns my client most, whether it be a new career move or improving relationships. I give one initial complimentary 30-minute consult via phone to all my clients to better understand their objectives with a Feng Shui consult and to see if this is really what they want. If so, we will then follow up with a floor plan which can be faxed or mailed over to me for suggestions. Suggestions for changes will be faxed or mailed back. Clients will be charged by MasterCard or Visa before work is returned. If it is decided that a home visit is in order, then the visit will be based upon the amount of work needed to be done. Many clients experience the difference in their affairs right away. For others it may take a while, but in overall, they do.

Do you seek positive change in your life? Make a change for the better with Feng Shui, the ancient art that enhances your space and brings fresh energy, harmony and balance into your life. We start with an exploration of your personal challenges and goals, followed by the consultation that is right for you. I offer on-site and long-distance Feng Shui consultations plus Space-clearing & Blessing ceremonies to bring you the fresh Chi energy you seek.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
