I used Arbor Tutors for math and English tutoring for both the GMAT and the GRE (I didn't know what I wanted to do for grad school). I ended up in the top 10% for the GRE and 720 on the GMAT. My tutor was amazing!!! I was so happy my boyfriend hired Arbor for Spanish tutoring. Super happy!

I spoke to Dan about setting up a time to meet for tutoring. I came to the location early and let Dan know that I was there. Unfortunately, he did not show up. I called, emailed and messaged him to check he was on his way, but I did not hear back. I did receive a message an hour after we were supposed to meet stating that he had overslept and apologized. Unfortunately, he did not offer to make up the lesson or make up for wasting my time. I believe that others should know of this unprofessional behavior should they work with Dan.

I needed some help with algebra in 8th grade. My parents had heard of Jeremy from a friend, so we got in touch and he started tutoring me. Jeremy is an excellent tutor. He helped me with my Algebra and all of my other subjects. He has a vast array of knowledge in all subjects ranging from Algebra to History. On top of that, Jeremy taught me what was important to focus on. He helped me prepare for the SAT and showed me how important it was. I went on to do excellent on it. This is what separates him from other tutors. He informs you of things that will be important in the future even when it has nothing to do with what you are learning in class. All the while, Jeremy is friendly and down to earth. It felt like a friend or family member was tutoring me. I truly couldn't give him high enough praise.

Kamil is an excellent tutor. We found Kamil through this website in our efforts to find a tutor for the SAT preparation. Our focus was on the Math portion of SAT. Kamil is a real professional and has the ability to adapt his teaching to the student. What I mean specifically is that while reviewing concepts and problems he was very flexible in providing multiple explanations to solving problems. I really appreciated the manner in which he was able to connect with my 17 year-old daughter and in my conversations with her she felt confident in his instruction and the value he added. She has found that his tutoring for the SAT has been helpful in her schoolwork as well. I would strongly recommend you reach out to Kamil if you or your child are looking for tutoring that will provide significant help in achieving higher scores. I would absolutely use Kamil again if I were in the market for a tutor for my child.

I've studied Precalculus and Calculus with Sasha. She has a deep understanding of the subjects and clearly, and patiently, articulates the steps to solving problems. She challenges me to solve the problem on my own, only dropping hints, or showing the solution, when I'm truly stuck. She does not waste time and is always encouraging me to try more problems. Administratively, she is responsible and flexible vis-a-vis the time and place of tutoring sessions. She is a valuable asset and a bargain.

Dr Fikar was of invaluable assistance to my daughter and improved her overall score by almost 100 points in only 6 weeks of tutoring. His most signigicant impact was in improving her confidence in approaching difficult math problems. Dr Fikar was so encouraging and gave her so much inside knowledge about the test and the college application process generally. He really made her feel like she had a dedicated, personal professional coach With her throughout the whole fall of senior year. He transformed what was a scary overwhelming process into something of a game that she was inspired to master and win. In addition, I recall her remarking in surprise after only her second tutoring session that it would also help her do better in her AP Calculus course at school, as Dr Fikar was better at explaining math than her own teacher. We are so happy to have found Dr Fikar and plan to enlist his services for our two younger daughters in the coming years. We enthusiastically give him the highest possible rating!

My daughter is Tutoring with RKS for HS Honors Bio and the experience has been fantastic, from the inception telephone call to date! Highly professional, efficient and responsive, taking the time to assess my daughter’s individual needs (including acquiring her specific textbook!) and offering the flexibility to meet her busy schedule. Also incredibly kind, compassionate and infinitely patient. Cannot recommend more highly.

It is so hard to find a quality SAT tutor but Nick is it! He was absolutely fantastic! My son needed help on the reading section and Nick got right to work by targeting his weakest areas. Over 4 or 5 months, my son's confidence and scores skyrocketed. Wow!!

Prior to hiring Jon as a tutor, I was struggling with LSAT prep despite taking a TestMasters course and 7sage. My score was not improving regardless of the hours I put in. That's when Jon came along and everything changed. After just one tutoring session, my sore went up 5 points! It felt absolutely incredible. Jon helped me tremendously with my weak points and gave great advise and tricks on how to tackle certain types of problems. I wish I had found out about Odyssey Test Prep sooner, wouldn't have wasted my time/money on TestMasters. If you are still debating between TestMasters and Odyssey Test Prep, go with Jon at Odyssey - you will not regret it!! Not only is he extremely knowledgable, he is always available for his students. Also, his Logic Games course is amazing. I have improved tremendously in the LG section and though I hate to admit this, I actually enjoy doing Logic Games now. Hiring Jon was the best decision I've made!

Thomas was one of the best tutors I have ever had. After trying a few other SAT tutors, I decided to stick with him. Thomas found different ways to help me understand specific topics and worked with me when I needed extra help. He's constantly researching new tutroing methods and implements them into his sessions. With his help, I was able to increase my SAT score by around 200 points. My parents even signed my sister up for tutoring with Thomas because they saw what an amazing tutor he was. After my SAT process was done, Thomas walked me through the college process and helped me with my essays. Because of him, I am going to college with a full scholarship and I will graduate debt free. Thomas is an amazing tutor and an amazing person. He builds connections with his students and their families that extend outside of the academic sphere. I could not be more grateful to Thomas for all that he has done for me and my family.

Erik was extremely helpful to my son. My son is not the disrespectful type but does not always take well to teachers who he thinks cannot teach well. He had nothing but positives to say about Erik. He enjoyed being tutored by him, and felt he got a lot from the sessions. And yes, he did very well on the SAT, finishing in the top 1%. Thank you Erik.

I’ve had one session with Cheryl so far and she’s exceeded my expectations. She was so prepared for our session, and so easy to talk to that I knew I was going to set up future sessions even before our first session was over. I definitely have a renewed focus for my GRE studying thanks to Cheryl. Overall great tutor!

John definitely is a good tutor in the sense that he has smart strategies to help students improve. I think he was very resourceful and patient when I worked with him in trying to help me understand my mistakes. He wasn't stingy in terms of time either and certainly wanted me to succeed. Something I think John can improve on, however, is making the life of his students a tad easier. What I mean by that is that he sometimes makes working with him a bit of a challenge. Often he would respond to emails late or send graded material over days late. There were things that he said he would send over but it seems he has completely forgotten about it. I completely understand his other obligations in terms of family and work but it's a little disheartening to see that at a point he ceased sending over things he initially promised. Maybe he has a lot of other obligations on his schedule and I understand that, however, I wish he would make this more clear if it were the case. Anyway, if you need extra support with LSAT tutoring I would recommend him for his skills and strategies.

I hired Jon and his staff for Sat preparation for my daughter who was in 11th grade and they were exceptional. Not only did they raise my daughter's score by a whopping 630 points but helped with the entire college application process landing a 35 thousand dollar scholarship to NYU. I cannot praise them enough.

I hired Jay to tutor my son for 10 -12th grade math and science courses and SAT/ACT prep during the summers. He always excelled at essays and vocabulary, but had difficulty processing algebra. From his first tutoring session, my son's confidence improved and his math & science grades climbed. He worked hard and enjoyed the lessons. His best scores in the SAT & ACT were in math and he was accepted into his first choice university. It really did take a village of good people to help my son realize his potential. Jay is one of the best mentors you could have on your side.

Glyn tutored my daughter for the SAT. She was able to improve her score by over 200 points! I couldn’t be happier. There is no doubt in my mind that her SAT score played a big role in her getting a partial scholarship to RIT. I would definitely recommend Glyn as an SAT tutor.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

When should you start preparing for the SAT?

It’s never too early to start preparing for college entrance exams, but professional tutors recommend a baseline of at least three months before the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is the gold standard for college admissions, and SAT prep is important for doing well. Your child’s SAT scores will have a major effect on which colleges send acceptance letters. Professional tutors can work with your kids to coach them on how to take the SAT, as well as studying the actual academic content. Doing well on the SAT is as much about knowing the right test-taking strategies as about having a firm grasp of the subject matter.

To understand your student’s readiness for the SAT, they can take the pre-SAT (PSAT) starting in their sophomore year. SAT prep can be structured around the student’s PSAT scores, so tutors can address any challenges and weak subject areas. If your child has their sights set on an Ivy League or elite school, SAT prep with a tutor or study program should start at least six months before the test. Vocabulary is a key element of the student’s SAT preparation and success. The national average rate for SAT prep tutoring is $70 per hour.

What is in the SAT test?

As your child is preparing for the SAT, it’s helpful to know the specifics of the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is made up of three main categories and one optional essay. Students have a total of three hours to take the test, with an additional 50 minutes for the optional essay. In total, there are 154 questions. During SAT prep, it’s helpful to take timed practice exams to understand how you’ll do during the actual test. Here is a brief overview of each of the four categories:

    • Reading: 65 minutes with 52 questions. The Reading test measures command of evidence, words in context, analysis in history and social studies, and analysis in science.
    • Writing and Language: 35 minutes with 44 questions. The Writing and Language test covers the same topics as Reading, as well as expression of ideas and standard English conventions.
    • Math: 80 minutes with 58 questions. The Math test looks at the student’s understanding of algebra, problem-solving and data analysis, and advanced math in the context of fluency, conceptual understanding, and applications.
    • Essay (optional): 50 minutes with 1 essay. The essay will demonstrate the student’s competency with writing, analysis and reading.
